ELLIPTIC GROMOV-WITTEN INVARIANTS OF DEL-PEZZO SURFACES CHITRABHANU CHAUDHURI AND NILKANTHA DAS arxiv: v1 [math.ag] 3 Jan 2019 Abstract. We obtain a formula for the number of genus one curves with a variable complex structure of a given egree on a el-pezzo surface that pass through an appropriate number of generic points of the surface. This is one using Getzler s relationship among cohomology classes of certain coimension 2 cycles in M 1,4 an recursively computing the genus one Gromov-Witten invariants of el-pezzo surfaces. Using completely ifferent methos, this problem has been solve earlier by Bertram an Abramovich [3], Ravi Vakil [23], Dubrovin an Zhang [8] an more recently using Tropical geometric methos by M. Shoval an E. Shustin [22]. We also subject our formula to several low egree checks an compare them to the numbers obtaine by the earlier authors. Contents 1. Introuction 1 2. Main Result 3 3. What is E g, the number of genus g egree curves in CP2 with a variable complex structure that pass through g generic points? Although the computation of E g is a classical question, a complete solution to the above problem even for genus zero was unknown until the early 90 s when Ruan Tian [21] an Kontsevich Manin [16] obtaine a formula for E 0. The computation of E g is now very well unerstoo from several ifferent perspectives. The formula by Caporasso Harris [6], computes E g for all g an. Since then, the computation of has been stuie from many ifferent perspectives; these inclue among others the algorithm by Gathman [10], [11] an the metho of virtual localization by Graber an Panharipane [15] to compute the genus g Gromov-Witten invariants of CP n although for n > 2 an g > 0, the Gromov-Witten invariants are not enumerative. More recently, the problem of computing E g has E g been stuie using the metho of tropical geometry by Mikhalkin in [18] using the results of that 2010 Mathematics Subject Classification. 14N35, 14J45. 1
2 C. CHAUDHURI AND N. DAS paper, one can in principle compute E g for all g an. A more general situation is as follows: let X be a projective manifol an an H 2 X; Z a given homology class. Given cohomology classes µ 1,..., µ k H X, Q, the k-pointe genus g Gromov-Witten invariant of X is efine to be N g,x µ 1,..., µ k := ev 1µ 1... ev k µ k [ M g,k X, ] vir, 1.1 M g,k X, where M g,k X, enotes the mouli space of genus g stable maps into X with k marke points representing an ev i enotes the i th evaluation map. For g = 0, this is a smooth, irreucible an proper Deligne-Mumfor stack an has a funamental class. However, for g > 0, M g,k X, is not smooth or irreucible, hence it oes not posses a funamental class. Behren, Behren-Fantechi an Li-Tian, have however efine the virtual funamental class [ M g,k X, ] vir H 2Θ M g,k X,, Θ := c 1 T X + im X 31 g + k; which is use to efine the Gromov-Witten invariants see [4],[5] an [17]. When all the µ 1,..., µ k represent the class Poincare ual to a point an the egree of the cohomology class that is being paire in 1.1, is equal to the virtual imension of the mouli space, then we abbreviate N g,x µ 1,..., µ k as N g. The number of genus g curves of egree in X, that pass through c 1 T X + im X 31 g generic points is enote by E g. In general, Eg is not necessarily equal to N g, i.e. the Gromov-Witten invariant is not necessarily enumerative this happens for example when X := CP 3 an g = 1. An important class of surfaces for which the enumerative geometry is particularly important are Fano surfaces, which are also calle el-pezzo surfaces see section 4 for the efinition of a el-pezzo surface. When g = 0, it is prove in [14], Theorem 4.1, Lemma 4.10 that for el-pezzo surfaces = E 0. In [23], Vakil generalizes the approach of Caporasso-Harris in [6] to compute the numbers for all g an for el-pezzo surfaces. It is also shown in [23], Section 4.2 that all the genus g Gromov-Witten invariants of el-pezzo surfaces are enumerative i.e. N g = E g. The enumerative geometry of el-pezzo surfaces has also been stuie extensively by Abramovich an Bertram in [3]. More recently, this question has been approache using methos of tropical geometry. In [22], M. Shoval an E. Shustin give a formula to compute all the genus g Gromov-Witten invariants of el-pezzo surfaces using methos of tropical geometry. The genus one Gromov-Witten invariants of CP n can also be compute from a completely ifferent metho from the ones evelope in [10], [11] an [15]. In [12], Getzler fins a relationship among certain coimension two cycles in M 1,4 an uses that to compute the genus one Gromov- Witten invariants of CP 2 an CP 3. In [9], using ieas from Physics, Eguchi, Hori an Xiong mae a remarkable conjecture concerning the genus g Gromov-Witten invariants of projective manifols; this is known as the Virasoro conjecture. The conjecture in particular prouces an explicit formula E g for N 1 for CP 2, which aprori looks very ifferent from the formula obtaine by Getzler in [12]. It is shown by Panharipane in [20], that the formula obtaine by Getzler for CP 2 is equivalent to a completely ifferent looking formula preicte in [9]. In this paper, we exten the approach of Getzler to compute the genus one Gromov-Witten invariants of el-pezzo surfaces. The formula we obtain has a completely ifferent appearance from the one obtaine by Vakil in [23]. We verify that our final numbers are consistent with the numbers he obtains see section 8 for etails. The Virasoro conjecture for projective manifols which is conjecture in [9] has been a topic of active research in mathematics for the last twenty years. In [8], Dubrovin an Zhang compute
ELLIPTIC GROMOV-WITTEN INVARIANTS OF DEL-PEZZO SURFACES 3 the genus one Gromov-Witten invariants of CP 1 CP 1 by showing that it follows from the Virasoro conjecture. We have verifie that our numbers agree with all the numbers compute by them [8], Page 463. They prove that the genus zero an genus one Virasoro Conjecture is true for all projective manifols having semi-simple quantum cohomology. It is prove in [1] that the quantum cohomology of el-pezzo surfaces is semi simple. It woul be interesting to see if one can use the result of this paper an apply the metho of [20] to obtain a formula for the genus one Gromov-Witten invariants of el-pezzo surfaces, analogous to the one preicte for CP 2 by Eguchi, Hori an Xiong in [9]. That woul give a irect confirmation of the Virasoro conjecture in genus one for el-pezzo surfaces. A etaile survey of the Virasosro conjecture is given in [13]. The main result of this paper is the following: 2. Main Result Main Result. Let X be a el-pezzo surface an H 2 X, Z be a given effective homology class. We obtain a formula for N 1 equation 3.1 using Getzler s relation Remark. We note that by [23], Section 4.2, we conclue that N 1 = E 1. Alternatively, we note that N 1 = E 1 follows from [24], Theorem 1.1. Our formula for N 1 is a recursive formula, involving. The latter can be compute via the algorithm given in [16] an [14]. The base case of our recursive formula are given by equations 3.2 an 3.3. We have written a C++ program that implements 3.1; it is available on our web page: 3. Recursive formula We will now give the recursive formula to compute N 1. First, we will evelop some notation that is use throughout this paper. Let ξ X := c 1 T X, for both the cohomology class an the ivisor, κ := ξ X, where H 2 X, Z, b 2 X := im H 2 X, Q, the secon betti number of X, X := ξ X ξ X, the egree of X. Moreover, is use for both the cup prouct in cohomology as well as cap prouct between a homology an a cohomology class. We are now reay to state the formula. First, let us efine the following four quantities: κ 2 T 1 := 2κ 2 κ T 2 := = = κ 2 1, κ 3 1 4κ1 + κ 2κ κ N , [ κ 2 4κ 22 2κ 1 κ 2 κ 2 κ X κ 2 2κ 2 X 1 2 ] 4κ 1 + κ 2 + 2κ1 κ 2 2κ1 κ 2 N 1 1 2, κ 1
4 C. CHAUDHURI AND N. DAS T 3 := = κ 2 κ 2 κ [κ 21 κ 1 2κ T 4 := 1 12 κ3 2 + b 2 Xκ X. The number N 1 satisfies the following recursive relation: ] + κ κ 1 + κ 2 1 2, 6 2 XN 1 = T 1 + T 2 + T 3 + T We will now give the initial conitions for the recursion 3.1. Let X be P 2 blown up at upto k = 8 points. Then the initial conition of the recursion is N 1 L = 0 an N 1 E i = 0 i = 1 to k. 3.2 Here L enotes the class of a line an E i enotes the exceptional ivisors. If X := P 1 P 1, then N 1 e 1 = 0 an N 1 e 2 = Here e 1 an e 2 enote the class of [pt P 1 ] an [P 1 pt] respectively. The initial conitions 3.2 an 3.3, combine with the values of obtaine from [16] an [14], give us the values of N 1 for any. Remark. We woul like to mention that the formula 3.1 yiels Getzler s recursion relation, equation 0.1 of [12], after some symmetrization of the summation inices of T 1 an T Del-Pezzo surfaces A el-pezzo surface X is a smooth projective algebraic surface with an ample anti-canonical ivisor ξ X. The egree of the surface is efine to be the self-intersection number X = ξ X ξ X. This egree X varies between 1 an 9. X can be obtaine as a blow-up of P 2 at k = 9 X general points, except, when X = 8 the surface can also be P 1 P 1. If X has egree 9 k an is not P 1 P 1, then we have the blow up morphism Bl : X P 2. We enote by E 1,..., E k the exceptional ivisors of Bl an by L the pull-back of the class of a hyperplane in P 2. We have H 2 X, Z = Z L, E 1,..., E k, an L L = 1, E i E i = 1, L E i = E i E j = 0 for all i, j {1,..., k} with i j. The anti-canonical ivisor is given by ξ X = 3L E 1... E k. If X = P 1 P 1, let e 1 = pr 1 [pt] an e 2 = pr 2 [pt], then ξ X = 2e 1 + 2e 2, e 1 e 2 = 1 an e 2 e 1 = 1 whereas e i e i = 0 for i = 1, Basic Strategy We will now recall the basic setup of [12], where Getzler computes the number N 1 when X is CP 2. First, let us consier the space M 1,4, the mouli space of genus one curves with four marke points. We shall be intereste in certain S 4 invariant coimension 2 bounary strata in M 1,4 which we list in Figure 1. In the figure we raw the topological type an the marke point istribution of the generic curve in each strata. We use the same nomenclature as [12] except for δ 0,0 which was enote by δ in [12], to avoi confusion between notations. See section 1 of [12] for a list of all the coimension 2 strata. There the strata are enote by the ual graph of the generic curve.
ELLIPTIC GROMOV-WITTEN INVARIANTS OF DEL-PEZZO SURFACES 5 δ 0,3 δ 0,4 δ 0,0 δ 2,2 δ 2,3 δ 2,4 δ 3,4 Figure 1. Coimension 2 strata in M 1,4. These strata efine cycles in H 4 M 1,4, Q. Let us now efine the following cycle in H 4 M 1,4, Q, given by R := 2δ 2, δ 2, δ 2,4 δ 3,4 1 6 δ 0,3 1 6 δ 0, δ 0,0. The main result of [12] is that R = 0. This will subsequently be referre to as Getzler s relation. In [20], Panharipane has shown that this relation, in fact, comes from a rational equivalence. Now we explain how to obtain our formula. Consier the natural forgetful morphism π : M 1,κ +2X, M 1,4. We shall pull-back the cycle R to H M 1,κ +2X,, Q an intersect it with a cycle of complementary imension; that will give us an equality of numbers an subsequently the formula. Let µ H 4 X, Q be the class of a point. Define Z := ev 1ξ X... ev 4ξ X ev 5µ... ev κ +2µ. The class ξ X is use since it is ample an hence numerically effective. Since R = 0 by Getzler s relation, we conclue that π R Z [M 1,κ +2X, ] vir = M 1,κ +2X, We can also compute the left han sie of 5.1 using the composition axiom for Gromov-Witten invariants which will give us the recursive formula.
6 C. CHAUDHURI AND N. DAS 6. Axioms for Gromov-Witten Invariants We shall make use of certain axioms for Gromov-Witten invariants. These are quite stanar, see for example [7], however for completeness we list them here. We assume X is a smooth projective variety. an Degree axiom: If eg µ eg µ n 2n + 2κ + 23 im Xg 1 then N g,x µ 1,..., µ n = 0. Funamental class axiom: If [X] is the funamental class of X an 2g + n 4 or 0, then N g,x [X], µ 1,..., µ n 1 = 0. Divisor axiom: If D is a ivisor of X an 2g + n 4. then N g,x D, µ 1,..., µ n 1 = D N g,x µ 1,..., µ n 1. Composition axiom: This is a bit complicate to write own, so we refer to [12], section It is a combination of the splitting an reuction axioms of [16] section 2. We also nee the following results which o not follow from the above axioms: 0,X µ 1, µ 2, µ 3 = µ 1 µ 2 µ 3, X N 1 0,X µ = 1 24 c 1T X µ. 7. Intersection of cycles Now we are in a position to compute the left han sie of 5.1. Fix a homogeneous basis {γ 1,..., γ bx } of H X, Q. Let g ij = X γ i γ j an g ij = g ij 1. For a cycle δ in H M g,n X,, Q, we introuce the following notation N,X δ µ 1,..., µ n = δ ev 1µ 1 ev nµ n [M g,n X, ] vir. M g,nx, Let µ 1 =... = µ 4 = ξ X, an µ 5 =... = µ κ +2 = [pt] be the class of a point. If δ = π δ 2,2, by the composition axiom N,X δ =N,X δ µ 1,..., µ κ +2 = g ij g kl N 1 1,X γ i, γ k, µ α α A = A,B,C 2,X γ j, µ α α B 3,X γ l, µ α α C, where the secon sum is over i, j, k, l ranging from 1 to bx an the first sum is over isjoint sets A, B, C satisfying A B C = {1,..., κ + 2}, B {1, 2, 3, 4} = C {1, 2, 3, 4} = 2. Note that if 1, 2, 3 > 0, by the egree axiom the only non-trivial terms occur when A = κ 1, B = κ 2 + 1, C = κ The limiting case 1 = 0 oes not yiel anything, however 2 = 0 or 3 = 0 have non-trivial contributions to the sum. When 3 = 0, 1, 2 > 0, the non-trivial contribution occurs precisely when C = 2, γ l = [X], A = κ 1 1, γ k = [pt], an B = κ
ELLIPTIC GROMOV-WITTEN INVARIANTS OF DEL-PEZZO SURFACES 7 Finally when 2 = 3 = 0, the only non-zero term occurs when B = C = 2, γ l = γ j = [X] an γ k = γ i = [pt]. Making use of the fact that for any σ, τ H X, Q we obtain the following expression N π δ 2, = bx bx i=1 j=1,x =3ξ X ξ X 2 N 1 κ κ 2 1, κ = κ κ 1 1 Next, let us consier the cycle δ 2,3. We then have N π δ 2,3,X = = A,B,C where the sum is over sets A, B, C satisfying g ij σ γ i γ j τ = σ τ, 2 ξ X 2 3 ξ X N ξ X ξ X ξ X 2 N g ij g kl N 1 1,X γ i, µ α α A 2,X γ j, γ k, µ α α B 3,X γ l, µ α α C, A B C = {1,..., κ + 2}, A {1, 2, 3, 4} = B {1, 2, 3, 4} = 1. All the cases are similar to the previous calculation except, when 2 = 0. In this case we can either have B = 1, A = κ 1, γ i = [pt] an γ j = [X]; or B = 1, C = κ 3, γ k = [X] an γ l = [pt]. We get N π δ 2,3,X = = = = κ 2 κ 2 1, κ 3 1 κ 2 κ 1 κ 2 κ ξ X 2 ξ X 1 ξ X 2 ξ X 3 ξ X N ξ X ξ X ξ X 2 ξ X N ξ X 2 ξ X 3 N Moving on to δ 2,4 we have N π δ 2,4,X = = A,B,C g ij g kl N 1 1,X γ i, µ α α A 2,X γ j, γ k, µ α α B 3,X γ l, µ α α C, where the sum is over sets A, B, C satisfying A B C = {1,..., κ + 2}, B {1, 2, 3, 4} = C {1, 2, 3, 4} = 2.
8 C. CHAUDHURI AND N. DAS Now there is no contribution when 2 = 0, however we have a non-trivial contribution when 1 = 0. We can use 6 to calculate this N π δ 2,4,X = 6 κ 2 2 ξ X 2 3 ξ X N 1 κ 2 1, κ = κ ξ X 2 ξ X ξ X 1 2 N For δ 3,4 we have = = 1 24 N π δ 3,4,X = = A,B,C κ κ 2 κ 1 1 ξ X ξ X ξ X 3 ξ X ξ X. 7.3 g ij g kl N 1 1,X γ i, µ α α A where the first sum is over sets A, B, C satisfying 2,X γ j, γ k, µ α α B 3,X γ l, µ α α C, A B C = {1,..., κ + 2}, B {1, 2, 3, 4} = 1, C {1, 2, 3, 4} = 3. The calculation is similar to the previous cases, so we omit the etails. We obtain N π δ 3,4,X = 4 κ 2 2 ξ X 3 ξ X N 1 κ 2 1, κ = κ ξ X 3 1 ξ X N = κ 1 κ 2 2 ξ X 4 N 1 κ = κ 2 1 ξ X ξ X κ = 1 ξ X ξ X ξ X The remaining cycles all have 2 genus zero components so the calculations are simpler. We will first consier δ 0,3 : N π δ 0,3,X = = A,B where the first sum is over sets A, B satisfying g ij g kl 1,X γ i, γ j, γ k, µ α α A 2,X γ l, µ α α B, A B = {1,..., κ + 2}, A {1, 2, 3, 4} = 1.
ELLIPTIC GROMOV-WITTEN INVARIANTS OF DEL-PEZZO SURFACES 9 The factor of 1 2 appears since the ual graph of a generic curve in δ 0,3 has an automorphism of orer 2. Neither 1 = 0, nor 2 = 0 has any non-trivial contribution so it is straight forwar to see that N π δ 0,3,X = κ ξ X 2 ξ X κ = The calculation for δ 0,4 is a bit more subtle: N π δ 0,4,X = = A,B where the first sum is over sets A, B satisfying g ij g kl 1,X γ i, γ j, γ k, µ α α A 2,X γ l, µ α α B, A B = {1,..., κ + 2}, A {1, 2, 3, 4} =. Contribution from 2 = 0 is 0. When 1 = 0, we must have A = which leas to N π δ 0,4,X =1 κ 2 2 ξ X κ = Finally, let us consier the cycle δ 0,0 : N π δ 0,0,X = b 2X ξ X = A,B where the first sum is over sets A, B satisfying g ij g kl 1,X γ i, γ k, µ α α A 2,X γ j, γ l, µ α α B, A B = {1,..., κ + 2}, A {1, 2, 3, 4} = 2. By an analogous calculation as the previous situations we have N π δ 0,0,X = 3 κ 2 1 ξ X 2 2 ξ X κ = Now collecting all these terms an using relation 5.1 we obtain the esire formula Low egree checks We will now escribe some concrete low egree checks that we have performe. el-pezzo surface obtaine by blowing up P 2 at k 8 points. We claim that N 1 L+σ 1 E σ re r,x k = N 1 L+σ 1 E σ r 1 E r 1,X k 1, Let X k be a if σ r is 1 or 0. Let us explain why this is so. Consier X 1 which is P 2 blown up at the point p. Let us consier the number N 1 L E 1,X 1 ; this is the number of genus one curves in X 1 representing the class L E 1 an passing through 3 1 generic points. Let C be one of the curves counte by the above number. The curve C intersects the exceptional ivisor exactly at one point. Furthermore, since the 3 1 points are generic, they can be chosen not to lie in the exceptional ivisor; let us call the points p 1, p 2,..., p 3 1. Hence, when we consier the blow own from X 1 to P 2, the curve C becomes a curve in P 2 passing through p 1, p 2,..., p 3 1 an the blow up point p. We thus get a genus one, egree curve in P 2 passing through 3 points. There is a one to one corresponence between curves representing the class L E 1 in X 1 passing through 3 1 points an egree
10 C. CHAUDHURI AND N. DAS curves in P 2 passing through 3 points. Hence N 1 L E 1,X 1 = N 1. A similar argument hols when L,P 2 there are more than one blowup points. The same argument also shows that N 1 L+0E 1,X 1 = N 1 ; L,P 2 the same reasoning hols by taking a curve in the blowup an then consiering its image uner the blow own. The blow own gives a one to one corresponence between the two sets an hence, the corresponing numbers are the same. We have verifie this assertion in many cases. For instance we have verifie that N 1 5L E 1 E 2,X 2 = N 1 5L E 1,X 1, = N 1 5L+0E 1,X 1 = N 1 5L,P 2. The reaer is invite to use our program an verify these assertions. Hence without ambiguity we write N 1 L+σ 1 E σ re r for N 1 L+σ 1 E σ re r,x r. Next, we note that in [8], Dubrovin has compute the genus one Gromov-Witten Invariants of P 1 P 1 ; our numbers agree with the numbers he has liste in his paper Page 463. Finally, in [23], Ravi Vakil has explicitly compute some N g for el-pezzo surfaces Page 78. Our numbers agree with the following numbers he has liste: N 1 5L 2E 1 = 13775, N 1 5L 2E 1 2E 2 2E 3 = 225, N 1 5L 2E 1 2E 2 2E 3 2E 4 = 20, N 1 5L 3E 1 = 240, N 1 5L 3E 1 2E 2 = 20 an N 1 5L 3E 1 2E 2 2E 3 = 1.
