Edmund, who is also the stamp designer for the new stamp issue, The Endangered Animal - Oriental Small-Clawed Otter, will help SingPost in its efforts to generate and inculcate an interest in stamp-collecting among the young. 1) Edmund Chen as SingPost s Stamp Ambassador Edmund is recognised as an artiste with mass appeal. Apart from being well-known as a family man, Edmund is friendly, stylish and has a flair for the arts. He is an ideal Page 1 of 5

2 ambassador to convey the message that stamps are not just collectibles, but also a wholesome hobby that can foster family ties as it brings family members, especially young families, together in a quest to learn more about a country s history, nature, art, culture and science. Edmund is excited about the collaboration. He said, It is an exciting opportunity to work with SingPost. Stamps are invaluable windows to a country s heritage, commemorating important events in a country s or region s history. As a stamp designer, I can do my part as a citizen in helping to preserve our heritage. I hope that through my ambassadorship, I can make a difference by bringing a new dimension to the people s perspective of stamps. Mr Woo Keng Leong, Executive Vice President (Mail) of SingPost said, Stamp collecting can be a fun, rewarding and inexpensive hobby. We are always looking for interesting ways to inculcate the interest in stamp collecting in the young generation. We feel that having Edmund as the stamp ambassador will help generate excitement in stamp-collecting. To begin with, I am sure many would love to own a set of stamps personally drawn by a local celebrity whom they are familiar with! 2. Endangered Animal Oriental Small-Clawed Otter stamp issue SingPost s latest stamp issue seeks to raise awareness of the endangered Oriental Small-Clawed Otter native to Singapore. The Oriental Small-Clawed Otter is vividly illustrated on the complete set of four stamps (S$3.20). The Oriental Small-Clawed Otter, also known as the Asian Small-Clawed Otter, is rare in Singapore, but has been recorded from the north-western coast of Singapore namely the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, Pulau Ubin and Pulau Tekong. The Oriental Small- Clawed Otter is regarded as vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) in its Red List of Threatened Species. It is distinguished from other Asian otters by its small size, and small hands and feet with short claws that do not extend beyond their partially webbed fingers and toes. The Oriental Small-Clawed Otter inhabits mangrove swamps and freshwater wetlands. Members of the public can also see the endangered animal in the Singapore Zoo. Edmund, the designer for this new stamp issue, wanted to showcase its beauty by capturing the various facets of the otter. The overall idea of this was really to put emphasis on the otter in its natural environment so as to bring focus to its fragile existence, and degenerating habitat, explained Edmund. Page 2 of 5

3 Products on Sale In conjunction with this stamp issue, a unique seralised imperforated Collector s Sheet will be released and comes with a folder. The otters in the folder cover is designed by his 20-year-old son, Yixi. Imperforated Collector s Sheet with golden serialised numbers (S$168) will only be sale at the Singapore Post Centre Post Office. Due to overwhelming response from the preorders, normal serialised imperforated Collector s Sheet (S$88), is completely sold out. Proceeds from the sales of the Imperforated Collector s Sheet with golden serialised numbers will go to SingPost s adopted charity, Food from the Heart. Apart from the complete set of stamps and imperforated Collector s Sheet, SingPost is also releasing the Presentation Pack (S$5.00) and Pre-cancelled First Day Cover affixed with the complete set of stamps (S$4.05). First day cover will be cancelled with a special the Oriental Small-Clawed Otter postmark specially designed by Edmund s 11-year-old daughter, Yixin.
