1 EAIC INSURANCE DAY 2015 Happy EAIC Day to all. Today, 18th Oct, marks the common intention of all the EAIC member nations to celebrate a special day devoted to insurance where the industry reaches out to the members of the public to educate the public and subtly show the value of insurance to society and the economy. It is also a day to share with the public by doing CSR. Some EAIC members have been celebrating insurance day throughout the year, some will do it around Oct 18 as Malaysia or on a special day like Brunei which will mark Insurance Day on 10th November. Here we bring you a snapshot of some of the EAIC Day celebrations in four markets in the EAIC: Hong Kong, Singapore, Taipei & Tokyo. EAIC Day 2015 HONG KONG 2015 is another exciting year for the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers. We continued to organise a series of new programmes on public education and industry promotion. One of the signature events this year is the Hong Kong Insurance Awards 2015, which was first launched in 2014 to raise standards across the industry by acknowledging top notched performance of the insurance industry. We are organising this prestigious Awards for the second time in 2015 with new elements. To ensure the credibility and integrity of this brand election, we invited the most respected figures from across the industry and related fields to be the panel of judges. Through their careful deliberation, top three finalists for 13 categories have been selected and the winners will be

2 officially announced at the Prize Presentation cum Gala Dinner to be held on 29 October 2015 at InterContinental Hong Kong. Over 300 honorable guests will gather at this delightful event to celebrate the pinnacle of achievement of the finalists and winners. Another iconic project Young Insurance Executive Development Programme (YIE) was initiated in 2015 to groom talents and attract new blood to support the rapid and robust growth of the insurance industry in Hong Kong. It combines practical on-thejob-training with academic qualifications. Trainees work for insurance companies 4 days a week on non-sales positions and spend 1 day on part time learning. Through providing training and internship opportunities, we hope to provide the community, in particular students, a fuller picture of the nature and career prospects of different jobs in our industry, and to nurture talents for various realms in the back office as well as enhance the professional standard of our practitioners. We are all engaged in a dynamic business and need to keep pace with the changing world, especially when it comes to do with communication and technology. To reach out to the younger generation and arouse more awareness and interest of the insuring public, we have make fuller use of the social media and online platforms in We have launched the first industry Facebook fan page HKFI Smart Union to provide interesting educational and informational feeds, videos, comic strips, games and short articles, etc. on insurance. It also serves as an interactive platform to hear the views from the community. All in all, we hope to strengthen engagement with the public as well as industry practitioners through this new channel. You are welcome to support us and "Like" us on Facebook and share our posts! All of these are only part of our many initiatives to reach out to different segments of the public. 3 Kuala Lumpur The General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM) commemorated General Insurance Day 2015 with a Road Safety Campaign focusing on the theme Pledge for Road Safety. The campaign was launched by the Chairman of PIAM, Mr Chua Seck Guan at the Nu Sentral Shopping Centre, Brickfields and was supported by JKJR, MIROS, Malaysia Global Road Safety Partnership (MGRSP), Majlis Keselamatan Jalan Raya Malaysia (MKJR) and the Vehicle Theft Reduction Council of Malaysia (VTREC). Mr Chua said The General Insurance Day in Malaysia is celebrated in October every year in line with all member cities of the East Asian Insurance Congress. On this day the Association and its member companies organize CSR activities which are community-based and aimed at raising public awareness for the general insurance industry and its relevance to the daily lives of all Malaysians. This year the Association is organizing a campaign to bring home the message of road safety and promote safer drivers with good driving habits. He highlighted that in a recent statement by MIROS, it was observed that 80% of traffic accidents are caused by human error. In a further study on the rate of car crash fatalities conducted worldwide, the global average for car crash deaths per 100,000 per year is 18. However, in Malaysia, the average car crash deaths per 100,000 people per year is 30. Malaysia currently stands at an alarming 17th position worldwide in terms of number of fatal accidents in the world. We are nearly double the world average. PIAM stressed that it was important for road users to take it upon themselves to improve their driving habits and be more defensive on the road. The mentality of most road users has to change with the need to be more civic conscious, if we want to be a progressive nation. CEO of PIAM, Mr. Mark Lim stated that it was timely for the general insurance industry to play its part to promote road safety and inculcate good driving habits. The alarming number of road accidents in the country year after year calls for real concrete measures from all stakeholders. Specifically this campaign was in support of Pillar 4 of the National Road Safety Plan developed by JKJR and MIROS which promotes safer road users. Mr Lim said that the event today promoted road safety by inviting the public to pledge their commitments on improving their driving habits and becoming safer road users. He was of the view that the writing of personal pledges demonstrates a strong call to action and enforces an individual s commitment to carry out what he has pledged. The general insurance industry hopes that this modest start to the campaign will inculcate better drivers on the road. Games and quizzes were also organized on road safety related issues. Hashtags with #ipledge4roadsafety and #GID2015 were introduced to reach to the masses, especially the younger crowd.

4 PIAM also highlighted that this was a collective effort with its member companies, some of whom will be organizing similar week long campaigns at their office premises to promote road safety. SINGAPORE The General Insurance Association of Singapore celebrated EAIC Insurance Day this year by inviting 500 insurance company s staff and their families as well as 50 disadvantaged youth from Beyond Social Services to the Family Day event at Singapore s newly opened Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum on 17 October As our theme of this year s Insurance Day was Family GI practitioners, staff and their families spent an entire morning together, learning to appreciate the sustainability of our eco system from exhibits ranging from marine fossils, land mammal fossils, insects and plants. Some of these extinct exhibits which are as old as 150 million years old like the three sauropod dinosaur fossils brought us back to land before time when these massive size animals ruled the world. For GIA, Insurance Day has become an integral part of our annual calendar as an occasion to demonstrate to insurance company (our members) employees, their family, friends and the public about the critical role our industry contributes to the national economy in terms of (1) providing protection of assets and earnings of businesses so that they can focus on their key objective of achieving profitable growth; and (2) enhancing personal lifestyles by making available affordable personal lines insurance products like private car motor insurance and travel insurance. TAIPEI Taiwan s insurance industry has developed from rags to the opening up of a new prospect with the support of the general public. In addition to commemorate the founding of the EAIC on the Insurance Day, Taiwanese insurance industry also take the opportunity to promote awareness of insurance and fulfill social responsibility the insurance owes to the general public, in particular to provide assistance to the disadvantaged minority. In caring for the general public and the disadvantaged minority, micro-insurance and safety driving were promoted by the Financial Supervisory Commission though organizing a welfare road run and garden party at the Meiti Riverside Park. The aim is to promote exercise through road run and cultivate awareness of micro-insurance in care of the disadvantaged minority through games at the garden party. Other activities organized by the insurance companies include: (1) Blood donation activity organized by South China Insurance, (2) National Children Safety Day to promote healthy eating sponsored by Zurich Insurance, and (3) Welfare Service propaganda to promote road safety via various media by the Non-Life Insurance of the R.O.C. To encourage the insurance companies and practitioners with distinguished performance in their professional services, innovation and fulfillment of social responsibilities, the 6th Taiwan Insurance Outstanding Award co-sponsored by the Taiwan Insurance Institute, Life Insurance Association of R.O.C. and Non-Life Insurance Association of R.O.C., and the 17th Awards of Insurance Faith, Hope and Love sponsored by the RMIM Insurance Education Foundation and

5 30 plus universities, have awarded 24 best performers for their outstanding achievements. TOKYO As in the past, GIAJ and the LIAJ have posted articles on their websites to commemorate Insurance Day. The GIAJ's website features a message from Mr. Hisahito Suzuki, the Chairman of the GIAJ, while a message from Mr. Manabu Hiraga, General Secretary of the EAIC, a summary of the EAIC, and information on the East Asian insurance market will be posted on the LIAJ's website. Also, both associations have placed message from Chairman of EAIC Organising Committee Mr. Chris Ma, Chairman of the Macau Insurer s Association on their websites. These messages will also be published in insurance business publications both at home and abroad. Click here for message of Mr Suzuki. The GIAJ also has exhibited display panels that introduce East Asian Insurance Day and EAIC activities at its headquarters, where customers can find out more about general insurance and pick up useful information such as GIAJ member company insurance pamphlets. The GIAJ will also contact each of the ISJ graduates to encourage them to attend the 28th EAIC Conference and to reunite with each other. The LIAJ makes use of East Asian Insurance Day to promote understanding among the general public not only of the importance of insurance per se, but also of the importance of cooperation among respective Asian insurance markets for the healthy and sustainable growth of the entire Asian insurance industry through the EAIC and other forums. We believe this helps people within the Japanese insurance industry become more interested in and feel greater affinity with neighboring Asian insurance markets, which have developed an increasingly closer relationship with each other, as well as the activities of the EAIC. In observing EAIC Insurance Day, the Life Insurance Association of Japan (LIAJ) would like to record what it works to spread the importance of life insurance. The LIAJ conducts insurance education promotional activities for a wide range of the population. For example, it published an information booklet for the elderly, and financial education materials for preschool and elementary students. The LIAJ will discuss increasing opportunities for insurance education and providing input to the parties concerned so that people can learn the role of insurance in life planning. This significant day is a good opportunity to reconsider what we should do in terms of spreading the importance of life insurance.
