1 T Conference 59 th Annual Conference & 115 th Council Meeting The 59th Annual Conference & 115th Council Meeting of Insurance Institute of India was held on 23rd & 24th August, 2014 under the auspices of Mysore Insurance Institute. Inaugural Session The conference was inaugurated by Prof. K.S. Rangappa, Vice-Chancellor, University of Mysore. Mr. A.K. Roy, President, Insurance Institute of India and Chairman & Managing Director, GIC Re presided over the Conference. Mr. G.Srinivasan, Dy.President, Insurance Institute of India and Chairman & Managing Director, The New India Assurance Co.Ltd., was also present at the inaugural session. The Chairman of Mysore Insurance Institute, Shri P Shridhar extended a warm welcome to all the dignitaries. The Chief Guest, Prof. K.S. Rangappa released a commemorative souvenir to mark the occasion. Around 250 participants from the corporate sectors attended the Conference. Inaugural Session Release Of Souvenir Prize winners Inaugural Address Prof. K.S.Rangappa, Vice-Chancellor, University of Mysore, and Chief Guest of the Conference, stated that it was indeed an honor and privilege to inaugurate the 59th Annual Conference and 115th Council meeting of Insurance Institute of India. He mentioned that while going through the details he came to know that Insurance Institute of India was established in 1955 for the purpose of imparting insurance education and was recognized by Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority and Government of India as Institution of higher learning in insurance and also has several affiliations in India and abroad. He mentioned that University of Mysore is the fifth largest university of the country and runs several programs for under graduates, post graduates as well as specialized functions. He offered to have a collaboration between University of Mysore and Insurance Institute of India or Mysore Insurance Institute to offer various academic courses in the field of insurance. He was happy to know that Mysore Insurance Institute which was established in 1989 with a membership of 72 has increased its membership base to 2078 in the current year with more than 115 Fellows, which signified its activities. He was also glad to know that Mysore Insurance Institute in collaboration with JSS Women s College has introduced a Diploma course for the visually challenged and mentioned that it was a real big achievement. He also congratulated Mysore Insurance Institute on completing its Silver Jubilee. He concluded his address by wishing the Conference all success and hoped that the Institute will certainly come out with new training programs about Insurance to reach common people.

The theme of the panel discussion was Health Care and Health Insurance Complementing or Conflicting. The panel discussion brought together professionals and experts from the health sector. The curtain raiser for the panel discussion was done by Dr. George E. Thomas, Associate Professor, College of Insurance. He explained what is the relevance of the panel discussion and how we are going about it. The session was moderated by Mr. Arindam Mukherjee, Director College of Insurance who set the background for discussion. The other panel members included Dr. Nayan Shah, Director - Paramount Healthcare Group, Mumbai, Dr. V.Ranjan, Director Healthcare Management Institute, Pune, Mr. K.K.Srinivasan, Retd. Member, IRDA, Bangalore and Mrs. Asha Nair, Director & General Manager, United India Insurance Co.Ltd., Chennai. The main highlight of the panel discussion was the participation by Dr. Devi Shetty, Cardiac Surgeon, Narayana Hrudayalaya through video conferencing. The discussion at the panel discussion revolved around the role of insurance companies, TPA s and Doctors in providing the medical benefits to the insured who are insured under the health insurance policy and whether the Health Care and Health Insurance sector are complementing or conflicting to each other.
