Learning Objectives: Attendees will understand the impact of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 on insurance companies, emerging issues, and regulatory developments. The Beautiful Science of Data Visualization Joe O Brien, Tableau Seeing and understanding data is richer than creating a collection of queries, dashboards, and workbooks. It s also more than just giving data to data scientists: it s about giving data and the right tools to everyone in your business. In this talk you will be introduced to how visual and cognitive science allow us to understand what makes data visualization so deeply satisfying. Why does a collection of bars, lines, colors, and boxes become surprisingly powerful and meaningful? How does fluid interaction with data increase our intelligence? We will explore how three 1
decades of research into the beautiful science of data visualization have changed the way we interact with data. Learning Objectives: Attendees will be able to see how visual and cognitive science explain what makes visualizing data so effective, will be able to see how the beautiful science of data visualization and how the modern analytic platform has changed the way we communicate our messages and ideas, and will get an appreciation for the importance of an iterative analytic process to uncover insights in your data. 10:10 10:25 a.m. Refreshment Break 10:25 11:15 a.m. CONCURRENT SESSIONS Statutory Update Connie Jasper-Woodroof, StoneRiver The National Association of Insurance Commissions continues to address a wide range of accounting issues. This session will provide you with an update of recently adopted standards and offer a glimpse of the emerging statutory accounting matters on the NAIC agenda. The information provided at this session will bring you up-to-date on all new topics to help keep you informed. Learning Objective: To obtain a general understanding and update about statutory and regulatory hot topics impacting the insurance industry, new statutory developments and changes impacting the insurance industry, and substantive and non-substantive statutory accounting revisions. Building a Secure Awareness Program Marcia Mangold, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Is your awareness training focused on meeting compliance requirements only? Did you know that awareness training has a lifecycle just like Governance or policies? Information Security is the focus of nearly every large organization. However, most programs consist of a yearly mandatory CBT (Computer Based Training) or PowerPoint presentation that is based on a compliance or framework checklist, and performed by whoever is available. Today s ever-changing security landscape requires constant reinforcement and a strategically planned Information Security Awareness Training program. As an Information Security Awareness and Training manager for a major healthcare insurer, my passion drives me to promote and deliver IS awareness training above what is required by compliance. This high-level overview will focus on ways to turn your security awareness from a check off the boxes activity into a repeatable evolving robust program. Learning Objectives: Attendees will be able to understand the difference between compliance and security for information awareness training, understand the lifecycle of an information security awareness training program, and provide examples of low-cost ideas for awareness training communications, events, and activities. 2
11:15 12:05 p.m. CONCURRENT SESSIONS 12:05 1:05 p.m. Lunch GAAP Update Tom Marchese, Plante Moran Eric Leslie, Plante Moran This session will cover the FASB s recent developments for US GAAP, specifically focused on insurance entities. Topics covered will include revenue recognition, financial instruments, short and long-duration insurance contracts, and credit losses. The presentation and Q&A will cover specific requirements of recent changes and discuss approaches to implementing the new guidance. Learning Objectives: Attendees will understand the timing and nature of upcoming US GAAP accounting changes impacting the insurance industry, be able to explain key aspects of the upcoming changes and differences to existing US GAAP, and understand key implications of accounting changes on their businesses. Advancing Without a Traditional Security Perimeter Michael Reed, Zscaler Organizations have been fortifying their network perimeters since the advent of the Internet. However, the growing trends of worker mobility and cloud-based services are making it necessary to revisit this mindset. We will review the current state of network security and explore how cloud-based security solutions augment or supplant the traditional perimeter approach. Learning Objectives: Attendees will be able to recognize the traditional perimeter-based security design, identify business trends that are driving a change to this approach, and identify specific use cases for cloud-based security. 1:05 1:10 p.m. Vendor/Sponsor Introductions 1:10 2:00 p.m. Fraud Happens Amanda Fletcher, Plante Moran Christine Luneack, Plante Moran This is an interactive session with real-life forensic case studies. Learn techniques used for detecting fraud red flags within accounting data and financial records. Hear about the current trends and statistics surrounding occupational fraud and how it affects the industry you work in. Learning Objectives: Attendees will understand current trends and statistics in occupational fraud, learn techniques used for detecting fraud red flags within accounting data and financial records, and learn what to look for in different fraud schemes. 3
2:00 2:50 p.m. The Cyber Regulatory Environment: Evolving Risk, Adaptive Response Tony DiLiberto, Deloitte Cyber risk management is a continuous growing trend within the insurance industry today as companies look to stay ahead of evolving threats and growing regulation. The NYDFS cybersecurity regulation and NAIC data security model law are amongst the drivers in the industry forcing companies to bolster their cybersecurity risk management programs. These regulatory drivers are pressuring entities to tighten controls and visibility around operational risk, including those associated with the effectiveness of their overall cyber risk management programs, third parties, fraud, risk models, and managing consumer complaints. Companies are evolving their respective risk management programs to address the growing focus on cyber risk and growing demand for transparency. The new AICPA cybersecurity attestation reporting framework has been developed to support entities in reducing the growing communication and compliance burdens, as companies look to the future on reporting requirements of their cyber risk management programs. Learning Objectives: Attendees will understand growing cyber risk trends in the industry, key objectives of NYDFS and NAIC cyber regulations, and the AICPA cyber risk management attestation. 2:50 3:05 p.m. Refreshment Break 3:05 3:55 p.m. Feedback: The Gift that Keeps on Giving Laurence Vanden Boom, Plante Moran Giving feedback is one of if not the most difficult interpersonal responsibilities required of us in a professional setting. Will I say the wrong thing? Will the receiver get the message? Will our relationship be strained? Most of us want an easy answer as to how to remove the unpleasant feelings associated with giving and receiving feedback. The bad news is, there is no easy answer no checklist or instructional book to doing it right. The good news is, each of us is already equipped with the emotional intelligence needed to improve our experiences with feedback. This session will focus on those very elements and provide a foundation for framing feedback in a new light as a gift. Learning Objective: Attendees will be able to identify universal and personal obstacles to giving and receiving feedback, examine emotional reactions to thoughts and the impact of those thoughts on subsequent behavior, and employ empathy when providing feedback to maintain an environment conducive to acceptance and accountability. 4
3:55 4:45 p.m. CIO Panel Discussion - System Conversions Shawn O Rourke, Amerisure Insurance George Onofrio, The Auto Club Group Chad Caldwell, Centric Consulting Tony Paris, Pioneer State Mutual Insurance Company Over the past 10 years, core systems modernization has been the leading investment priority of P&C insurers. These massive investments in technical and procedural optimization will continue for the next several years. As you can imagine, the horror stories and successes are numerous. There are best practices that should be followed to increase chances of success and overcome some of the common barriers found in these complex initiatives. Join us as we hear the perspective of these industry leaders. Learning Objectives: Attendees will be able to understand the key challenges facing insures looking to convert core systems, will become acquainted with common approaches utilized during data conversion, will become acquainted with common release strategies to implement system conversions, and will be able to understand how a system conversion works. 4:45 5:00 p.m. Closing Remarks Kelly Hornung, BDO USA, LLP President of the Michigan Chapter of the IASA 5
