2 Health insurance and health screening

3 General healthcare information The American medical system is not government-run Student insurance helps to cover part of all of the cost of hospital stays, as well as some prescription medications Information on purchasing student health insurance can be found at shs.osu.edu Non-prescription medications (Aspirin, Tylenol, etc.) should be purchased from local pharmacies, and are not usually covered by student health insurance The medical records of students 18 years or older are private, and are not released to others without the consent of the student

4 Health screening Please note that Ohio State requires all new international students to undergo a brief health screening through Student Health Services Your Health Screening Appointment is part of your assigned Orientation This health screening is free to students who attend during their required screening day and time Failure to complete your health screening will result in not being able to register for classes

5 Health screening Your health screening will include questions about any medical conditions and/or allergies you have, as well as any medications you may be currently taking Bring with you any important medical information (for example, TB tests, chest X-rays and prescription, vaccine and allergy information) with an English translation

6 Vaccination requirements Step 1: Licensed Medical Provider Documentation Download the appropriate PDF form All paper forms must be signed by a licensed medical provider Scan or take a picture of the paper form/document(s) Upload electronic copy of form to your MyBuckMD using your university name.# and password

7 Vaccination requirements Step 2: Electronic Form Completion Logon to MyBuckMD using your university name.# and password Click the My Forms tab Locate the Vaccination Requirement electronic form Complete the electronic form by transferring the dates from the paper form completed by your licensed medical provider to the electronic form Click the Submit button

8 Non-compliance Vaccination requirements A student will be considered non-compliant if: Step 1 and/or Step 2 is not completed Incomplete documentation is received Vaccinations are contrary to the guidelines The licensed medical provider is not a M.D., D.O., P.A., or N.P. In the event of non-compliance, the student will be notified and instructed on how to achieve compliance. This may include: Repeating Step 1 and/or Step 2. Proof of immunity through a titer lab test Repeat of the vaccination

9 Available vaccines Most vaccines are available year-round for enrolled students. Call to schedule an appointment. We also offer seasonal flu vaccine programs during autumn semester. The following vaccines are generally available at Student Health Services: Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) Tetanus/Diphtheria Tetanus/Diphtheria/ Pertussis (Tdap) Influenza Hepatitis A, B and A/B Rabies* Varicella (chickenpox) Meningococcal A Human Papilloma Virus Yellow Fever* Typhoid* * Special requirements for the administration of these vaccines.

10 Student Health Services On campus medical services available through Ohio State s Wilce Student Health Services office: Primary care Optometry (vision screening, eye glasses and contacts) Dental care (teeth cleaning, cavity filling, braces) Sports medicine and physical therapy Preventative medicine Gynecology Allergy evaluation and treatment

11 Student Health Insurance Mandatory for all students Coverage for fall semester begins August 20, 2015 It is highly recommended to purchase interim insurance prior to arrival You will be charged for Ohio State Student Health Insurance when you register for classes Insurance benefits include: Medical coverage Prescription coverage Dental coverage Vision coverage Specific dates and information for purchasing health insurance can be found at shi.osu.edu

12 Interim health insurance Make sure your personal/family insurance will cover your travels to the U.S. and your time in the U.S. prior to the start of your Ohio State health insurance coverage (August 20) Purchase interim insurance Comprehensive Plan: Provides up to four weeks of extended coverage A pro-rated weekly minimum must be paid to the University Bursar in addition to the standard rate for comprehensive coverage for the upcoming enrolled term. 19 Pedestrian safety Campus traffic is congested Watch for cars Cross street in the crosswalk Look for STOP signs Students should travel in pairs or in groups, especially in the evening There is a late night campus Student Safety/Escort Service available to all students

20 Personal safety Protect yourself and your property keep the following safety tips in mind: Be aware Don t be an easy target walk confidently and with purpose Be unflashy be inconspicuous with your new gadgets and expensive items

22 Bicycle safety Protect yourself! You are treated as a vehicle and must obey all traffic laws Bicycle helmets and pads should be worn whenever possible

23 Basic laws Ohio State University is a tobacco free campus Tobacco use (smoking cigarettes or cigars) is not allowed indoors throughout the entire state of Ohio The legal drinking age of alcohol in the United States is 21 Carrying firearms/guns of any kind on campus is prohibited except for police and military officers All students are responsible for their actions as it relates to the Ohio State Student Code of Conduct as well as state and national laws.

24 Crime and safety Do not leave personal belongings unattended There are stereotypes about some types of individuals being more likely to steal or commit crimes than others Students who are robbed or are the victim of a break-in, mugging or other form of violence should contact the police by calling 911 If students have been affected by crimes of a sexual nature, they should contact the police by calling 911
