5 Security & safety responsibilities These are: to always provide a safe environment for our customers and coworkers, to safeguard our property and to have effective and aggressive safety and security programs in place to ensure that everyone s safety awareness continues to grow. = DUTY OF CARE 5

6 THIRD PARTY VIOLENCE commonly recognized facts For employees, violence can cause pain and suffering, which can go as far as causing disability or death. Physical attacks are obviously dangerous, but serious or persistent verbal abuse or threats surely will also damage an employee s health through anxiety and stress 6

7 facts continued For employers, violence can lead to low moral and a poor image for the organization, making it difficult to retain or recruit coworkers. It will also result in extra cost caused by absenteeism, higher insurance premiums and compensation payments 7

9 Basic demands addressing violence in the workplace Training and information programs for managers and coworkers on violence in the workplace (in place since 2000 in UK, Australia, Asia, and North America). Some European countries have developed policy packages in line with the UK health & safety policy. Group policy statements and programs are presently being developed 9

10 and All business units have made provisions for post stress trauma treatment of affected coworkers having become victims of a robbery or other form of workplace violence. 10

12 Excerpt from Chapter 3 Accident Prevention Store management has to ensure that customers and visitors are not exposed to avoidable accident risks and must ensure the health and safety of coworkers in every aspect related to work. Each store must appoint a Safety Responsible appropriately trained to be responsible for accident prevention tasks 12

13 continued General and specific accident hazard awareness and accident prevention programs must be in place in every store. These programs must be reviewed and updated at least once a year. All stores must ensure that safety committee meetings are conducted at least 3 times a year and that the meetings are properly documented. 13

14 continued Store management must encourage coworkers to actively participate in accident hazard identification and accident prevention programs Part-time and temporary coworkers shall also be included in the safety and accident prevention training programs 14

15 and The country security manager must ensure that at least once every year store management, supervisors and coworkers take part in training sessions covering accident risk awareness, accident hazard identification, recognizing occupational risks and how to make provisions for adequate protective and preventive measures. 15
