5 III Preface The insurance industry is of vital importance for the development of modern economies. After all, protection against risks is giving private households the financing predictability they need; moreover, it is often an indispensable precondition for entrepreneurial action. Demographic change, geopolitical risks on the rise and the rapidly increasing process of digitisation are confronting society and economy with major challenges. In this complex risk environment, the German insurers are making an invaluable contribution to providing security: Over 433 million insurance policies clearly demonstrate the high importance of insurance protection for individuals and companies alike. The German insurance companies employ more than half a million people, and as long-term investors of almost 1.6 trillion euros, they are also a crucial source of funding for both the private and the public sector. For many years, the Statistical Yearbook of German Insurance has been providing a wealth of information on the development of the industry and its social and economic framework conditions. We hope that the 2018 edition, as its predecessors, will prove a useful and reliable source of information and contribute to a better understanding of the insurance industry among experts and the general public.
