3 Faculty Michael E. Farnell, Program Co-Chair, is a founding partner of and leads the firm s policyholder insurance recovery group. He is one of the most sought-after insurance coverage attorneys in the Northwest exclusively representing policyholders. He has represented businesses and individuals in disputes with insurance companies for nearly 20 years. Hon. Joel S. DeVore was appointed to the Oregon Court of Appeals in 2013 by Governor John Kitzhaber. Prior to joining the Court, he was in private practice since 1983, with the firms of Luvaas Cobb and Mautz Hallman. He focused on civil litigation with an emphasis in appellate work., Program Co-Chair, is the owner and managing shareholder of Lether & Associates PLLC. He has been involved in insurance and commercial litigation since His practice predominantly involves the representation of insurance companies and individuals in the investigation, adjustment and defense of complex coverage matters. James L. Guse, an attorney with Barker Martin PS, is a leader in the firm s Insurance Coverage practice group and provides guidance to other practice groups on matters of insurance coverage. In addition to insurance, he is experienced in construction defect and general business litigation. John A. Bennett, a shareholder with Bullivant Houser Bailey PC, has tried cases for more than 35 years in Oregon and Washington. His current practice predominantly involves first-party insurance coverage and defense of claims for extra-contractual damages ( bad faith ). Dale L. Kingman, a partner with Gordon Tilden Thomas & Cordell LLP, focuses on the resolution of complex insurance coverage disputes on behalf of policyholders throughout the U.S. In addition, he handles select commercial disputes, especially within the construction industry. Lloyd Bernstein, a shareholder with Bullivant Houser Bailey PC, concentrates in first-party property disputes. He also advises and represents clients regarding issues presented by lines of insurance including personal and commercial property & liability, builders risk, inland marine, etc. Rick Lee, a partner with Bodyfelt Mount LLP, joined the firm in He practices general civil litigation, with an emphasis on products liability, environmental law, toxic tort, insurance coverage, and professional liability. He also serves regularly as an arbitrator on non-court mandated cases. Thomas W. Brown, Special Counsel with Cosgrave Vergeer Kester LLP, joined the firm in 1981 and was its managing partner from His practice focuses on civil appeals in state and federal courts, insurance coverage opinions and litigation, and professional liability defense. Francis J. FJ Maloney III, a shareholder with Maloney Lauersdorf Reiner PC, started his legal career as a Deputy District Attorney. Since moving to civil practice, he has focused on first-party cases involving SIU and fraud, tort defense, bad faith and extracontractual trial work. Sean W. Carney, a partner with Parsons Farnell & Grein LLP, focuses on assisting individual and corporate policyholders manage risk and resolve insurance coverage disputes including cases arising out of general liability, D&O liability, professional liability, property and auto policies. Kevin S. Mapes is a partner with Ball Janik LLP and cochair of the firm s Insurance Recovery practice. He represents clients on insurance coverage matters including directors and officers coverage disputes, construction claims, general commercial liability, and disability claims.
4 Hon. Judith H. Matarazzo was elected to the Multnomah County Circuit Court in Prior to serving as a Judge, she was in private practice in Portland, specializing in the area of personal injury and medical malpractice. She also served frequently as a mediator and arbitrator. Kyle Sturm, a partner with Foreman Sturm & Thede LLP, focuses on insurance recovery and resolution of construction and commercial disputes. He handles insurance claims across many industries, with emphasis on recovery for commercial policyholders and governmental institutions. Adina Matasaru, principal with Matasaru Law PC, has extensive experience representing clients in complex contractual settlement negotiations, consumer fraud and Fair Trade Practices investigations and lawsuits by the Department of Justice and consumer class action lawsuit defense. Amir Tadjedin is a partner with Markun Zusman Freniere Compton LLP. His practice focuses on litigating and arbitrating commercial disputes in professional liability matters. He has been retained on a variety of professional liability claims, and also maintains an active regulatory practice. Robert S. May, an attorney with Kilmer Voorhees & Laurick PC, focuses on serving the needs of the insurance industry in first-party insurance defense, defense of complex casualty claims and coverage. He has developed a niche in arson, bad faith, marine/boat claims and premises liability. Guy J. Thompson is an attorney with Stoel Rives LLP in the firm s Environment, Land Use & Natural Resources practice group. He advises his clients on insurance coverage and procurement. He previously served as an Assistant Attorney General with the Arizona Attorney General s Office. Emily S. Miller, a member of Miller Nies LLC, often represents defendant policyholders seeking coverage under their own liability policies. She also represents plaintiffs seeking redress against insured parties and consults with other attorneys in need of insurance expertise. Frank J. Weiss is a partner with Tonkon Torp LLP. He regularly advises corporate policyholders with respect to the scope and availability of insurance coverage, the presentation of insurance claims, and the negotiation of settlements with insurance companies. Hon. Karsten H. Rasmussen is a Senior Circuit Court Judge and recently transitioned into his new career as a full-time mediator. He served as a sitting Judge with the Lane County Circuit Court from , and as Presiding Judge from He has held over 850 formal mediations. Hon. Janelle F. Wipper became a Washington County Circuit Court Judge in August 2011 and is currently its Chief Civil Judge. She was previously Associate Chief Counsel and Senior Assistant Attorney General, Civil Enforcement Division, Oregon Department of Justice. Gary Sparling is a shareholder with Soha & Lang PS. His practice emphasizes insurance coverage, commercial and construction litigation, and appellate practice. He is also a part-time instructor in the paralegal program at Edmonds Community College.
