Three waters Marcin Dąbrowski, PhD Eng. Silesian University of Technology Gliwice, Poland A GIS-BASED METHOD FOR SUPPORTING OPERATIONAL EVENTS MANAGEMENT IN WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM

Operational events commonly appear during the exploitation of water supply system (WSS), can be defined as every change of the object's technical state, may be intentional as a result of deliberate human actions on the technical object, or unintentional, including situations occurring automatically, without previous conscious human activities. Unintentional operational event: breakdown of technical object Intentional operational event: the planned inspection of fire hydrant

Intentional and unintentional operational events The most typical unintentional operational events occurring in the WSS: damage or ejection of the sealing material from the connection points of water pipes, circular or circumferential breaks, damages of valves and other fittings, freezing of water line, pitting corrosion of the pipe. The intentional operational events are: any planned maintenance and service works, undertaken in relation to the WSS, a typical example are planned technical inspections, usually performed on the basis of planned work schedules.

The model of operational events handling Maintenance crew Identification of the leakages in the network SCADA SCADA alert Notification about failure Third party 4. Inspection tasks allocated at the base of location of technical objects Daily Report of service and repair works Technical Department of the Water supply Enterprise Technical Department of the Water supply Enterprise The decision on the need to implement inspections The preliminary schedule of the inspection plan Sending the inspection plan 1. Localization the place of a failure Receiving the information about unintended operational event Sending the notification Omission of corrective actions Dispatcher No need to repair network Registration of the failure Information about carried out works The need to repair network Sending the information about failure Report of faulire Department of Water Network Maintenance The final inspection plan Feedback about conducted diagnosis Department of Water Network Maintenance Criteria for identifying a network fittings for inspection Final approval of the network inspections schedule Maintenance crew The decision to undertake repairs Registration of corrective or maintenance activities Realization of work order Implementation of maintenance or repair activities Information about the localisation of a failure Sending a repair crew to confirm a failure The necessity for location The procedure for leak detection 2. Pointing the place of failure occurrence Measurment crew Finishing of maintenance or repair activities 5. Using GIS maps to arrive at the place of a failure 3.Using GIS maps for precise determination the location of a failure

The method for supporting operational events management 'Module collecting data about technical state of the WSS' 'Module collecting data about maintenance works' 'Module for processing and analysis of maintenance data' Measurment points located in particular areas on the water network Operational events related to places of their ocurrence KPIs related to technical objects and their location Module for spatial analyses' Supporting the decision-making Analyses and decision-making at the base of geographic information

Method of maintenance analysis for technical objects First stage: Creating the ranking of technical objects Step 1 Calculation of a set of key performance indicators (KPI) for the technical objects Step 2 Transformation of the calculated KPIs to a common grading scale Step 4 Calculations within following components: - Assessment matrix, - Matrix for categories - Matrix of decision -making levels Step 3 Grouping the values of the KPI in technical, economical and organizational categories and allocating them to the levels of decision-making Step 5 Calculating aggregate measure Second stage: Classification and selection of technical objects Step 6 The classification of technical objects in ascending order based on their aggregate Step 7 Selecting technical objects with unfavorable values of aggregate Step 8 Preparing group of selected technical objects in the assessment matrix Third stage: Detailed analysis of key performance indicators Preparing basic elements for analyses - Summarizing the assessment for each technical object - Classifying the sum of assessment in an ascending order - Choosing 20% of the with the smallest values - Developing maintenance recommendations for selected assessment Analysis of assessment and KPIs for selected technical objects - Grouping assessments and KPIs according to their values - Analysing of KPIs within the chosen range of values Carried out for the particular technical object Cross-sectional analysis of selected indicators - Selection of assessment of indicators with the most unfavorable values Carried out for any technical object

Conclusion In a typical approach data about various aspects of WSS network maintenance is usually collected in the form of paper reports or summary tables. Putting this data on thematic layers it can be used for variety of spatial analyses that will allow to identify the important relationships between different factors. Efficient using of WSS requires continuous tracking of qualitative and quantitative changes in this technical system. Very important issue is the interpretation of data obtained both from the carried out monitoring and recorded exploitation history of the network. The collected information concerns the technical condition of the WSS, the operational events occurring within it as well as maintenance and repair processes carried out in relation to the WSS.
