1 Adirondack Central School District PROPOSED BUDGET Dear ACS Community Members: The Board of Education has adopted the school budget. You will find that it is a fiscally and educationally responsible budget. We are presenting a budget to voters that meets the needs of our students while also being fiscally responsible to our taxpayers. The budget that you will be voting on May 16, 2017, maintains all of our instructional programs and staffing needs. We continue to maintain all of our programs so our students have many opportunities throughout their educational careers at ACS. As always, we will continue to strive for academic excellence as we help prepare our students for graduation making them all college and career ready. The budget of $28,933,590 carries a tax levy decrease of 0.47% and the overall budget has an increase of.93%. The Board of Education has worked diligently to provide what is best for the ACS students, faculty, staff and community. You will see in this newsletter that the budget for the school year is $266,427 over last year s budget. We have researched and looked closely in all areas where potential cuts could be made without having an impact upon student learning. This year s budget includes the decrease from three days a week to one day a week for our data analyst position. Additional responsibilities for this position will be given to another employee. The budget also includes the elimination of one elementary teaching position due to enrollment and two teacher aide positions due to retirement. In addition, we have streamlined our supply costs, discontinued our elementary summer school due to lack of participation and cut unused library databases. A Budget Hearing is scheduled for May 9, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the High School cafeteria. The budget vote is May 16, 2017 from 12:00 noon until 8:00 p.m. in the Middle School, room 111. Please exercise your right to vote on May 16, Should you have any questions, please feel free to call at ext Thank you for your continued support of the Adirondack Central School District. Respectfully Submitted, Board of Education John Abdo, President Rick Gallo, Vice President Sandra Beasock Mark Emery Michael Kramer Doug Muha Almanda Sturtevant Edward S. Niznik, Superintendent of Schools YOUR VOTE IS YOUR VOICE REMEMBER TO VOTE ON TUESDAY, MAY 16, noon 8:00 p.m. Middle School - Room 111

5 Page 5 Budget Issue May 2017 BOARD CANDIDATES (The following letters were submitted by the Candidates) JOHN ABDO My name is John Abdo, and I am currently seeking re-election for a seat on the Adirondack School board for a third term. I have proudly served on the school board for 6 years now and I am currently president. I have learned, maintained and enforced the functions of the school board and how it supports the students and faculty. I strive to make sure the children of Adirondack Central School get the best education possible. Tammy, my wife of 26 years, is a graduate of ACS, along with our daughter Alison who also attended ACS, graduating in 2009 and then proceeded to graduate from Paul Smith's college with a degree in Culinary Arts. Our son Andrew also graduated from ACS in I have over 20 years of experience in budgeting, handling union contract negotiations, OSHA and safety initiatives. I welcome the chance to continue to serve the community and our children, helping them to grow strong, confident, knowledgeable and ready for their future and making it as bright and knowledgeable as possible. I thank you and appreciate your continued support for the upcoming term. MICHAEL KRAMER My name is Michael Kramer and I would like the opportunity to again serve as a member of the Board of Education at Adirondack Central School. My wife Denise and I reside on Hutton Heights in the Village of Boonville. We have four children David, Lindsey, Lauren and Anna and they, like myself, are graduates of ACS. I have been employed as a pharmacist at Rite Aid Pharmacy in Boonville for 19 years and prior to that I was the owner of Sanford Pharmacy on Main St. in Boonville. I am a former member of the ACS Board of Education; a position I held for 18 years and I currently hold a seat on the Jeff-Lewis BOCES Board of Education where I have served for more than 16 years. I believe that this experience gives me the insight, the knowledge and the qualities needed to be a valuable member of the ACS board once again. There is no better community service than to provide a healthy and safe environment for learning, excellent leadership and sound educational opportunities for all our children. Q. What s on the Ballot? 6 Page 6 Budget Issue May 2017 Q. Who Can Vote?: Q. Can I Vote By Absentee Ballot?: To be eligible to vote, a resident must meet the following requirements: Lived in the Adirondack Central School District for at least 30 days prior to May 16th. Be at least 18 years of age. Be a citizen of the United States. Q. How Will My School Taxes Be Affected By This Budget For the budget, the tax levy will decrease by 0.47%. Since we are reducing the tax levy, there will be no increase in your school taxes for next year. It is important to understand, however, that if tax bills increase next year for individual homeowner, it will not be because of the school budget. Other factors not within the control of the school district that could impact tax bills include changes in home market value, assessed valuations and shifts in the tax burden from one class of taxpayer to another. Therefore, any increase in a tax bill for the school year would not be attributable to the school district budget. Residents who will not be in the area on May 16th, or who are unable to vote in person, may apply for an absentee ballot at the Adirondack Central School District Office. The application must be submitted at least 7 days prior to the vote. If the absentee ballot is to be picked up by the voter in person, applications will be accepted until May 15th. Absentee ballots must be returned to the district clerk no later than 4:00 p.m. on May 16th. Q. Voting Method Adirondack will once again be using the electronic voting machines from the Oneida County Board of Elections. If you have voted in the a Town/Village or Presidential election then you will be familiar with the machines. When you go in to vote you will be given a pre-printed ballot. After filling the ballot in, you will simply feed the ballot through the electronic voting machine. There will be poll inspectors on site the day of the vote.
