2 Page 2 of 8 I. Time Management A. **Activity**: Volunteer Juggle: Feedback from Students 1. Items needed for the Activity a. Pillow(case): Sleep Essential for 7-8 hrs of sleep Promotes better health and wellness Avg college student gets < 6 hrs b. Picture Frame: Family and Home Fail to let homesickness overshadow all the opportunities here at RU On the other end of the spectrum, do not let all the opportunities cause you to forget about F&F Drop an , IM, or phone call at least 1-2 X p/wk Establish call times with parents c. Bear: Social RU Must find a balance with academic life and make wise choices about activities in one s social life Fail to let social life take control and dictate times studying, sleeping, eating, etc. Remember the ultimate result of college is to obtain an education in order to capture a lucrative profession. Social life is a sidebar that should be a positive add on. d. Book: Academics Top priority as far as school is concerned Should strive to be successful as possible, not just avg. e. Food: Health and Wellness Healthy diet will enable one to avoid the Freshman 15 Try to exercise 2-3 X p/wk Utilize campus food resources and your meal plan f. Quarter: Money
3 Page 3 of 8 Securing a job one s first yr is not a problem as long as the hours are kept in check and the job is not interfering with one s academics Recommend a job on campus bc of hour restrictions 2. Summation a. A good support system of time management is needed to maintain all these areas in one s life. b. Adequate time should be given to each area c. Balance must be found B. **Teaching** 1. Time Management Tips a. Utilize a Planner Brings organization and puts it all in perspective Record all tests, quizzes, club events, road trips, study groups, etc Color Code with various inks for various classes or academics/extracurricular, etc b. Create a Semester Plan Lg Desk Calendar or on Computer Include all major assignments: test, quizzes, speeches, lab assignments, research papers, projects, club meetings c. Study Rule of Thumb: Study 2 hrs for every 1 hr in class 15 credit hrs=30 hrs of studying p/week Begin studying for mjr tests at least 3-4 days in advance d. Punctuality Allow mins travel time to class, study groups, on campus appointments, etc.
4 Page 4 of 8 Punctuality is extremely important 2. Top Five Time Management Mistakes a. Start Your Day Without A Plan Of Action. Will fail to accomplish what absolutely needs to be accomplished Plan of action will bring organization b. Get Out Of Balance In Your Life Our lives are made up of Seven Vital Areas: Health, Family, Financial, Intellectual, Social, Professional, and Spiritual. If one neglects any one area, never mind two or three, success will be sabotaged If one does not take time for health, family life and social life are hurt; If one s financial area is out of balance, one will not be able to focus adequately on professional goals c. Work With A Messy Desk Or Work Area Studies have shown that the person who works with a messy desk spends, on average, one and a half hours per day looking for things or being distracted by things. That's seven and a half hours per week, a minute here and a minute there In sight-in mind
