OMIC R&D TECHNOLOGY BOARD Ball Screw Rapid Frming Request fr Prpsals 1.0 Purpse The purpse f this dcument is t prvide guidelines and a template fr the submissin f prpsals t the Oregn Manufacturing Innvatin Center (OMIC) Technlgy Bard fr the successful cmpletin f the research prject described belw in the sectin entitled Prject Infrmatin. 2.0 Prject Infrmatin Prject Title: Ball Screw Rapid Frming Prject Descriptin: Discver new methds and tls fr creating lw cst high precisin ball screws. Thread Whirling is a methd fr frming screws cmmnly used in the medical field fr bne screws. Thread Whirling is typically dne n swiss CNC lathes r lathes with a Y-AXIS, using this methd screws can be cut in a very shrt amunt f time. The accuracy f thread whirling des nt lend itself t an applicatin where a high precisin ball screw with a 16Ra surface finish is required. Rller Burnishing is a way t cmpress a cut surface by pressing a rtating wheel against the wrkpiece in rder t achieve extremely smth surfaces. Cmbining these tw prcesses, thread whirling and rller burnishing, culd ptentially lead t drastically reduced runtimes fr cmpanies t machine ball screws.
