3M Occupational Health and Environmental Safety Group Hearing Protection Hearing Protection 3

The 3M Occupational Health and Environmental Safety Division has been helping to protect people at work for 30 years. Excessive Noise and Hearing Loss Hearing loss caused by exposure to noise at work continues to be a significant occupational illness. The Dangers of Over Protection It may be tempting to pick the hearing protection with the highest level of protection (or attenuation), however over attenuation can bring its own problems. If the sound level at the ear is reduced too far, the wearer can become isolated, unable to hear colleagues voices, moving vehicles, warning sounds, or alarms Step by step guide to using the Optime Alert System and Sound Check Meter 1. Measure the noise level 2. Identify the corresponding icon A detailed noise assessment which you may have already carried out will identify the noise level. Identify RNR (Recommended Noise Rating) you fall under and record the icon. The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 db(a) RNR Description Peak level at Limit Value - 140 - RED 3 OPTIME 95 db(a) - 110 db(a) You are above the permitted exposure level, hearing protection is compulsory. Ideal for all frequencies. Peak level at Upper Exposure Action Value - 137 - Above 95 db(a) Peak level at Lower Exposure Action Value - 135 - - 90 - Above 87 db(a) RED 2 OPTIME 95 db(a) - 105 db(a) You are above the permitted exposure level, hearing protection is compulsory. Ideal for high and medium frequency noise. - 87 - RED 1 OPTIME 87 db(a) - 98 db(a) You are above the permitted exposure level, hearing protection is compulsory. Ideal for high frequency noise. Upper Exposure Action Value HPE must be used where sound level exceeds the Higher Action Value - 85 - Between 87-93 db(a) Between 83-93 db(a) Lower Exposure Action Value HPE must be provided to individual workers when Action Value is exceeded - 80 - Between 83-85 db(a) YELLOW OPTIME 83 db(a) - 93 db(a) GREEN OPTIME RNR* < 85dB(A) You are above the permitted exposure level, hearing protection is compulsory. Hearing protection is not compulsory but is made available to workers for their comfort and protection. Between 80-85 db(a)

Noise Regulations Under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 a new Limit Value of 87dB(A) at the ear (under hearing protective equipment) must not be exceeded, and the Upper Action Level becomes 85dB(A) and the Lower Action Level becomes 80dB(A). Whilst a reduction of 5dB(A) may not at first glance appear significant, it is worth noting that a reduction of just 3dB(A) is roughly equated to halving the sound energy level. The Optime Alert System by 3M makes for a quick and easy Hearing Protection Equipment selection process Choosing the correct hearing protection for your needs can be difficult; the hearing protectors should neither over nor under protect the user. With this in mind 3M has an easy to use Optime Alert system for 3M, and Peltor Branded Hearing Products that aids correct selection of hearing protection appropriate to noise level. 3. Choose your preferred hearing protection equipment Use the icons related to the products to choose your preferred 3M, and Peltor Hearing Protection Equipment. 3M Optime Alert System by Product Alternatively the 3M Optime Sound Check Meter will indicate the average noise in your work place area when left there to stabilise. PLEASE NOTE: At levels above 95dB(A) you will need an accurate noise assessment to correctly select the product. Green and Yellow marked products are not suitable for use in low frequency noise. 3M Roll Down Ear Plugs 3M Pre-moulded Plugs 3M Pod Plugs 3M Banded Plugs 3M Ear Muffs Superfit 33 Ultrafit X 3M No-Touch Peltor Optime III 3M 1120/1130 Push-Ins Soft Superfit 36 E-A-Rsoft Neons / Blasts E-A-Rsoft Metal Detectable 3M Solar 3M 1100/1110 E-A-Rsoft Fx Corded Tri-Flange Pro-Seals Peltor Optime Push To Listen Tracers 3M Torque Peltor Optime II Ultrafit Peltor Tactical / Protac Peltor Digital Radio 3M 1261/1271 Express E-A-Rcaps 3M Ultra 9000 Flexicap Peltor Optime I 3M Pulsar 3M Model 5000 3M 1310 Peltor H 31 Reflex E-A-Rsoft 21 Ultrafit 20 E-A-Rflex 20 Clear 20 E-A-Rband Tracer 20 Caboflex Ultratech Ultrafit 14 E-A-Rflex 14
