2 Conference Program About Standard Business Reporting When launched in July 2010, Standard Business Reporting (SBR) will not only reduce the costs of reporting financial information to government, it will also help the business community to improve the quality of both internal and external reporting. Reporting effected includes, annual financial reports, business activity statements, tax returns, and payroll tax. Led by the Treasury, the government agencies involved are the Australian Taxation Office, Australian Securities and Investment Commission, Australian Prudential Regulation Authority, and the state and territory revenue offices. About the conference The SBR Conference brings together national and international experts who: will demonstrate what Australian business can expect from SBR explore and discuss global financial reporting trends, including open standards such as XBRL will discuss what SBR means for business, accountants and software developers, and will ultimately help you to discover what you need to do to implement SBR. 3 Welcome Current reporting requirements impose a significant burden on business - a burden that the Australian Government is committed to reducing. The Standard Business Reporting (SBR) Program has resulted from one of the recommendations of the Banks taskforce, which examined the regulatory burden on Australian businesses. The reduction of regulatory burden is the driving principle for SBR. There are 13 Australian, state and territory government agencies - as well as software developers, accountants, bookkeepers and other business intermediaries around the country - collaborating in the design and delivery of SBR. Last year, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) released a communiqué supporting SBR, and ongoing progress reports are provided to COAG s Business Regulation and Competition Working Group. SBR won t just make business-to-government reporting easier, it will also enable the streamlining of financial information along the reporting chain - from business and intermediaries through to analysts, investors and regulators. As well as improving the reporting processes, SBR is developing a new e-channel for business and accountants, and will also provide a single secure sign-on to on-line services across the agencies in scope. Once fully operational, SBR will save Australian business $800 million a year. 7 Keynote speakers Conference 2009 Keynote Speakers Michael Pascoe Michael Pascoe is one of Australia s most respected and experienced finance and economics commentators with 35 years in newspaper, broadcast and on-line journalism covering the full gamut of economic, business and finance issues. Michael is seen on Channel 7 s Sunrise and news programs, is Associate Editor of Alan Kohler s EurekaReport.com.au, Contributing Editor for the Sydney Morning Herald and Age BusinessDay.com.au sites and a weekly finance columnist for Yahoo!7 among other things. Michael has four sons, maintains a love of Rugby Union, a dislike of gardening and what he calls an outlook of optimistic scepticism. Angela MacRae, Commissioner, Productivity Commission Angela MacRae was appointed as a Commissioner with the Productivity Commission in March Throughout her career, Angela has worked as an economic consultant with a primary focus on taxation and superannuation issues and their practical application to the private and public sector. In more recent years, she has worked on issues relating to small to medium sized business. In the lead up to the tax reforms of 2000, she was the tax reform spokesperson and National Tax Director for CPA Australia. Subsequent to the implementation of GST and PAYG, Angela was contracted to the Prime Minist er s Office to assist in tax reform implementation. Angela was a member of the Taskforce on Reducing Regulatory Burdens on Business, which reported to the Prime Minister and Treasurer in Paul Madden, Program Director, SBR, The Treasury Paul Madden is the Program Director for Standard Business Reporting which is being led from within the Australian Treasury. He is responsible for the overall Program including design, development, stakeholder relationships and management, and implementation. Paul also coordinates the work of teams in the other agencies in this multi-government agency Program. Prior to taking up this role, Paul was a First Assistant Commissioner with the Australian Tax Office responsible for the overall design (systems and business process) of a major transformation program, as well as developing business and systems designs to support policy and administrative reforms with a client and staff experience focus. Within the Tax Office, Paul also had responsibility for Whole of Government service delivery and interoperability. Paul played a major role as the Project Manager for systems delivery of a major Tax Reform in He has since led subsequent reform projects and has managed the ATO s overall systems development function. Harm Jan van Burg, Programme Director, The Netherlands SBR Programme Harm Jan van Burg is senior policy-maker of the Directorate General of the Tax and Customs Administration, part of the Netherlands Ministry of Finance. He is the programme director for the Netherlands Standard Business Reporting Programme. With a degree in social sciences and having previously worked for the Dutch Post and Telecommunications, Harm Jan has been active in various roles across the Dutch Civil Service since 1983, linked mostly with corporate communications and electronic filing. He was responsible for the pioneering videotext services and the first tax administration website. He was involved in developing electronic tax filing from 1996 onwards and from 2003 till 2009 vice-chair of the intergovernmental management team for the co-ordination of e-government development in the Netherlands. Convinced of the added value of standardisation, focusing on increasing the efficiency and transparency in financial reporting processes between businesses and government, Harm Jan was the initiator of the Netherlands Taxonomy Project (awarded the Netherlands innovation award in 2006) which now is proceeding as the Standard Business Reporting Programme. Mike Willis, cpa, Partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Founding Chairman XBRL International Mike Willis has more than 26 years of accounting and auditing experience and is a partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers. Mike served as the Founding Chairman of XBRL International ( ), which is currently composed of more than 600 leading software, accounting and finance companies from 27 countries around the world. Mike has served in a number of roles within the XBRL community and currently serves on the International Steering Committee as Vice-Chairman. XBRL is an international information format standard designed to dramatically enhance business reporting supply chain processes benefiting preparers, distributors, aggregators and consumers of this information. He speaks frequently, publishes papers and blogs on the topic of business reporting. Mike has been interviewed for or published articles in a range of business periodicals on the topic of a more efficient business reporting supply chain including the Harvard Business Review, Financial Times, Business Week, Wall Street & Technology, CFO Magazine, and CIO Magazine. Mark Johnson, CEO, PricewaterhouseCoopers Mark Johnson is PricewaterhouseCoopers Chief Executive in Australia and a member of the Firm Executive. He is responsible for the strategic direction of the firm and passionate about driving exceptional client service and fostering a culture of high performance. Mark has held leadership positions with the firm for the past 14 years and has extensive experience in development and lead execution of strategy. Prior to his current appointment, Mark held the positions of National Managing Partner Businesses and Australian Assurance Leader, in addition to serving on the Global Assurance Leadership Team. An active client-facing partner, Mark has led the audits of a number of PwC s major clients and provided a range of other related accounting, control and governance services to many of Australia s largest companies. He is a former member of the Australian Auditing and Assurance Standards Board and is currently Deputy Chairman of the Finance and Reporting Committee of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Peter Switzer Peter Switzer is an expert on money and business in Australia. He is the founding director of Switzer Financial Services an accounting, business and financial advisory company. Peter is an award winning broadcaster. Previously a radio commentator with the Triple M and the Australian Radio Networks, his background working in the media with the likes of Doug Mulray and the team from the Panel has also given him a unique sense of humour. Peter was also the official economics commentator for the Sydney Olympics. A former lecturer in Economics at the University of NSW, Peter is also the small business editor for The Australian newspaper, columnist with the Daily Telegraph, and host of the 2GB small business show. Peter is also the host of Talking Business for the Qantas in-flight service Radio Q, the Money Coach on Sydney s ABC s 702 radio station with James Valentine, commentator on Vega FM, and a finance commentator for Yahoo! 7.Other speakers
