The barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, lost points or 1.01% to settle at 31, The Nifty index lost points or 1.11% to settle at 9, Key indices logged declines for the fifth straight trading session. The Sensex settled at its lowest level in over 5-1/2 weeks. The Nifty settled at 5-week low. Metal and mining stocks dropped. PSU bank stocks dropped sharply. Shares of Cochin Shipyard saw strong debut on the bourses on 11 August Sentiment was also affected adversely after the finance ministry said in its midyear economic survey on 11 August 2017, that there are downside risks to the Indian government's growth forecast of % for the fiscal year to March Domestic stocks saw a gap-down opening on weak global cues as geopolitical tensions prompted investors to adopt a risk off approach. Stocks cut losses in morning trade. Stocks languished in the red later during the session. Key indices extended losses since afternoon trade and hit fresh intraday low in late trade. MARKET TODAY Trading of Nifty 50 index futures on the Singapore stock exchange indicates that the Nifty could rise points at the opening bell on positive global cues. Overseas, Asian stocks were trading higher after three losing sessions, tracking a firmer Wall Street. Gains among technology companies helped snap a three-day losing streak for US stocks on Friday, 11 August The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose points to close at 21, The S&P 500 gained 3.11 points, or 0.1%, to end at 2, The Nasdaq Composite Index climbed points, or 0.6%, to close at 6, Investors bet on slower US rate hikes following weaker-than-expected consumer price data. But gains were muted by increasingly aggressive exchanges between Washington and Pyongyang. Geopolitical risks were expected to remain a key theme for the global markets in the near term, as North Korea celebrates Liberation Day on Tuesday, 15 August 2017, to mark the end of Japanese rule. 2 SECTORAL INDICES: NIFTY SHORT TERM OUTLOOK: The Nifty witnessed a significant gap down opening on last trading session, 11 th August. Post the negative opening Nifty made an attempt to form a pullback however it couldn t stage a meaningful recovery. In the second half of the session Nifty faced second round of selling pushing it below 9700 on intraday basis. On the weekly chart Nifty has posted a negative close after five consecutive positive weeks. Daily chart of Nifty shows that the near vertical fall over last few sessions has breached the junction of 40 DEMA & daily lower Bollinger Band. The index has tumbled down to 61.8% retracement of the July rally as well as near the rising trend line from previous crucial swing lows.
