3 Executive Summary The Unisys Security Index TM is Australia s only regular snapshot of the nation's sense of security. Launched in Australia in June 6 and conducted by leading market research company Newspoll, the Index provides a regular, statistically robust measure of concern about four areas of security national, financial, Internet and personal security. The Index tracks consumer concern towards eight specific issues within these four categories and provides an overall measure of concern in the community (an Index number out of 3). In May 14 the Australia Unisys Security Index stands at 16/3, down 23 points from the previous survey in May 13 and the lowest level since the research was first conducted in 6. All areas of concern tracked in the study recorded a fall compared to 13. The results of the Unisys Security Index 14 show that data privacy issues are still the top security concern for Australians with 52 percent of Australians extremely or very concerned about unauthorised access to or misuse of their personal information and 51 percent extremely or very concerned about other people obtaining or using their credit/debit card details. In May 14 the top three areas of concern for Australians are: 1. Unauthorised access to/misuse of personal information (52%) 2. Other people obtaining/using credit card/debit card details (51%) 3. 4 Global comparison With an overall index of 16 Australia has recorded a moderate level of concern. Serious levels of concern are evident in three developing nations where the Unisys Security Index is higher than, along with France and Malaysia. 10 State Comparison May 14 (point-in-time) The comparative ranking of the four areas of concern is fairly consistent across all states in Australia. All four security indices by state National Security Financial Security 6 Internet Security Personal Security NSW VIC QLD SA WA Chart 11: State comparison level of concern by indices Financial security is consistently the top area of concern for all states with Queensland recording the highest level of concern in this area. Personal security is the second highest concern across all states, overtaking national security in most states when compared to last year. Western Australia recorded the highest level of concern for personal security. Western Australia recorded the lowest level of concern about national security. 1

16 Other key findings In May 14 the Australia Unisys Security Index stands at 16/3, down 23 points from the previous survey in May 13. Index results for each area of concern are: National Security Index 97 (down 31 from 128) Financial Security Index 117 (down 22 from 139) Internet Security Index 1 (down 23 from 123) Personal Security Index 19 (down from 124) Demographic findings against each issue National security in relation to war and terror Women are more concerned about this issue with 38% extremely or very concerned compared to 25% of men. National Security in relation to a serious health epidemic Household grocery buyers are more concerned about this issue with 28% extremely or very concerned compared to 18% of those who are not a household s grocery buyer. Other people obtaining/using credit card or debit card details Older Australians are more concerned about this issue, with 55% of those aged 5+ extremely or very concerned compared to 42% of those aged years. Ability to meet essential financial obligations Those with children under 18 in their household are more concerned about this issue with 32% extremely or very concerned compared to 18% of those without children under 18 in their household. Computer security in relation to viruses and unsolicited s Younger Australians are much less concerned about this issue with only 18% of those aged concerned about this issue compared to 34% of Australians aged and 31% of those aged 5+ years. Security of shopping or banking online Whether or not you have children under 18 years, are married or unmarried, or are in paid employment or not does not impact the response to this issue. Unauthorised access to/or misuse of personal information Older Australians are more worried about this issue with 57% of those aged 5+ extremely or very concerned compared to % of those aged years. Overall personal safety over the next 6 months Women are more worried about this issue with 18% extremely or very concerned compared to 12% of men. 16
17 About Unisys Security Index Unisys Security Index is a global study conducted to gauge the attitudes of consumers on a wide-range of security-related issues. Launched globally in October 7 and conducted bi-annually, it provides a statistically robust measure of concerns around four areas of security National, Financial, Internet and Personal. Conducted in Australia by market research firm Newspoll the Unisys Security Index provides a regular, statistically robust measure gauging levels of concern about various aspects of security. The survey, on which the latest results are based, was conducted nationally March 14 by Newspoll using a nationally representative sample of 1,1 respondents aged 18 years and over. All results have been post-weighted to Australian Bureau of Statistics data.
