Over 50s - Attitudes to Retirement 14347_Over50sOmnibus_TranscriptEpsom_Tp01 00:00:35:00 Can I start off by asking you your name, age and occupation? I don t have an occupation. I m retired. I m John and I m 71. So there you are. 00:05:32:00 You mentioned you are already retired. What planning did you put into that? Well quite a lot really because I needed to retire and to be able pay off my mortgage otherwise I couldn t do it really and I wanted to set up in business on my own which I wasn t very good at. I was going to do printing for schools. You know. It just didn t work out the way I thought it would. It was so difficult to contact them and make them interested in it. I tried for a year and a half or so and then gave up really. I got a job as an IT technician as I d been in teaching, you see. So I was able to pay the mortgage off when I was made redundant. That s how it worked. Otherwise it wouldn t have worked. And I bought a Macintosh with the money. The Macintosh LC, the next one after the Mac Plus. So I bought one for myself, one of the first ones to be produced so I ve had them for a long time. 00:06:50:00 Can I start off by asking your name, age and occupation? I m Brigitte Furze. I m 61 and I m a musician stroke housewife. 00:20:27:00 How are you planning for retirement what are you doing? I haven t financially planned. My husband and I once had a bank manager in to explain more of what the situation is but that was a few years ago and I didn t understand much of what he was saying. I trust God has promised that he will look after us and we feel we haven t been reckless with out money so I think we can take him at his promise and I m trusting in that.

Barbara Warwick, 61 and I m an accounts assistant. 00:28:06:00 How are you planning for retirement, if you re planning for retirement? Well, I ve had two divorces so I haven t got a great deal behind me. Andy s better. We have a buy to let flat as well as the house we live in. I ve got a got a couple of private pensions and a work pension, so oh and two ISAs. That s about it. 00:28:29:00 Bill Saint. I m retired and I m :35:02:00 You mentioned you re retired. How did you prepare for that? By being made redundant twice. The first time I thought ok. The second time I took the hint. I retired when I was 63. Did the arithmetic with my wife and decided we could afford it. She retired the year after. I ve already been retired three years. Three and a half years. 00:35:33:00 Nigel Barton, 56 and I m and accountant. 00:40:53:00 Are you preparing for retirement? If so, how? Yes. I have a very good occupational pension arrangement so I contribute to that. It s very good. 00:41:06:00

Noelle Lain, 59, retired. 00:44:52:00 Are you preparing for retirement? If so, how? It s all sorted with pensions and that sort of thing. It s all done. 00:45:05:00 Heather Drage. 53. Education Consultant. 00:49:31:00 Are you preparing for retirement? If so, how? Yes I am. In about 12 years time. So yes, planning for that. I am 75 years old and my occupation I m a retired schol teacher. 00:11:00:00 You said you re retired. How did you plan for that financially?

I had a good amount of savings. I was saving right throughout when I was working. 00:11:25:00 Denise Wilkinson, 66, and I m retired. 00:18:20:00 You said you re retired. How did you plan for that financially? I ve got a small private pension but I also have disability allowance so that helps me pay for council tax and extra gas and electricity every month. 00:18:51:00 My names Betty Brockbank. My age - I m 74 and I was a nurse 00:25:42:00 You said you re retired. How did you plan for that financially? I was in the NHS scheme which means that you get - when you finish work however many years you ve worked - you get your pension according to that. 00:26:00: _Over50s Omnibus_Transcripts_Ewell_Tp 03 00:37 Name Susan Nelson Age 61 Occupation Retired 04:01 Well I paid into a pension 04:13

Can you tell me a little bit more about that was it a work pension or? No, it was a private pension plan 04:24 Name Winifred Age 79 Occupation Retired 16:16 You mentioned that you re retired, how did you plan for that financially? Well I didn t plan for it, I was married and my husband was at home and all that so I really stopped work when I was about 60 and I ve never been back to work since. 16:36 In terms of finance, how did you arrange that? Well my husband took out a big insurance, he died but he left it to say I got half of what he got for the rest of my life so I m lucky really. 16:54 Name Ken Age 52 Occupation Construction manager 28:00 I haven t thought about that yet, I ve got pensions in place and that, but not anywhere near that at the moment so 28:15 Name Pearl Age 65 Occupation Part time bookkeeper 34:00

Well as a family we are retired, so I m not making any more plans, just enjoying 34:09 How did you plan for than financially? I didn t my husband had a pension which it s a bit sad really as it s short sighted because of me 34:22 If you could explain that a bit more? Well I should have taken a pension out years ago whether it was a private one or perhaps if it was a company one in the last 10 years but it s because of the amount of hours I worked it was only part-time that they didn t consider it was worth while so I just didn t go into a pension which was a bit of a mistake 34:48 Name Stephen Age 64 Occupation Retired 40:52 Well I put money into a private pension and took it out a little bit earlier, just subsidise it slightly 41:23 Over 50s Omnibus_14347_Kingston_Tp04 00:01:27 Right, my name is Sue and I m 54 and I m a Duty Manager. 00:05:55

When s that gonna be [laughs]. Yeah just saving really just for my retirement, I don t have pensions or anything at the moment, but yeah I m just saving. 00:06:14 Chris Kelly, 60 and on a career break but I m an I.T. Manager normally. 00:12:25 Well I m on a career break at the moment, I m not sure if I m going to go back to work or not and I ve been planning for that for the last years with investments and just being frugal. My daughter asked, asks me teach me how to save dad and the answer is don t spend, so it s really looking at the markets, I spent a year and half studying finances, not in any for a qualification or anything, but to try and understand the market and go to the right people to ask the right questions and then make a decision. There s always a risk involved. 00:13:08 Janet Bolt, 67, retired. 00:19:37 How did you plan financially for retirement? Saved up money, had an occupational pension. 00:19:49 My names Ken Brown, I m 55 and I m a solicitor by profession. 00:25:20 Planning for it. I do have an independent financial advisor, whether I take it or not is another matter, but we do have IFA, so we go to him, he s a friend as well, so yeah.

00:25:43 I m, well my name is Jean Lambert, I m retired and my age, that s a tricky one, I m :32:08 How did you plan financially for retirement? I didn t really plan for it, because I ve never, when I was married I stayed at home and looked after the children, in that old fashioned way, so I didn t retire. 00:32:38 Jan Man, 70, retired. 00:37:42 I am retired. I ve done my planning so my finances are fine; I ve sorted them all out. 00:37:52 When you were planning for retirement financially, what did you do? I had a works pension and savings. I bought Isa s and I bought a second house to invest for buy to let. 00:38:12 David Evans. Coming up to 70 in two weeks time and I m retired Yes we saw a financial advisor. My wife sold her business so we had some money there and I had a relative who died so we took a financial advisor on-board and he recommended investments.

Yes my name is Arlene Dignin I m an administrator and I m Yes I have well planned for my retirement. I am in pension scheme and I have saved and I intend to have a good retirement and I plan to enjoy it _Over50sOmnibus_Transcript_Kingston_Tp05 00:00:48:00 Can I start off by asking for your name, age and occupation? I m a housewife my name is Elaine Turnball. I m :04:59:00 Are you planning for retirement financially and if so, how? Yes, although I don t work, I m still topping up my pension at the moment. Because you just don t what will happen in the future so its easier to keep topping it up because the government pension won t be enough to live on so you ve just got to keep going. 00:05:20:00 Can I start off by asking for your name, age and occupation please? Tom Cook. I m 62 and I m an accountant. 00:11:42:00 I have a few properties, which are to let which should adequately look after my retirement. And some pensions which are totally useless. We stopped subscribing to them some years ago. The returns aren t great so I went into property and there are good returns and that s what I ll be doing for retirement.

They kept me on just long enough to get my pension and that s it really. I m not intending to work again. I can get by on my pension and lump sums. I have no sort of large areas of expenditure to come. Paid off the mortgage. Paid off the ex-wife. You know, I don t have to spend much money on things really. I m quite fortunate in that regard. 00:19:02:00 00:25:04:00 With difficulty really. Obviously one sort of had investments and I got my own house in Cape Town. Not as well as I should have done quite frankly but one manages. 00:25:34:00 Can I start off by asking for your name, age and occupation? My name is Veronica Suckling. I m 70 and I m sort of semi-retired. 00:25:04:00 With difficulty really. Obviously one sort of had investments and I got my own house in Cape Town. 11 00:34:57:00 I ve got some pension funds I ve had for ages. I don t spend a lot of time looking at them, they re just there. 00:35:09:00 Can I start off by asking for your name, age and occupation? William Baron, 56 and I m voluntary worker. 00:41:07:00 Well it depends how you define retirement because in a sense, I m not working now but I m looking around for things, yeah. 00:41:23:00 More specifically, what are you doing financially? I could categorise myself in ten different ways. Well in a sense, I have by paying pension provisions and being a homeowner, planning that way. I think its more a case of finding something purposeful and meaningful to so with your life. A lot of people actually finish work but go on to do voluntary work to give them a sense of purpose and put something back into the community. 00:42:26:00 Over 50s Omnibus_14347_Manchester_25/06/12_Tp Well retired, aged 71, that s where you re supposed to say no, you re not!?
