Bill Cosby, the once-beloved star of The Cosby Show, has fallen from grace among Americans, though the court of public opinion has yet to deliver a verdict for the many sexual assault cases in which he has been implicated. Presumably one of the most popular celebrities in America just months ago, Cosby is now viewed unfavorably by a plurality of Americans at 39%. His guilt, however, remains in question among voters a plurality (41%) are unsure of the validity of the allegations, suggesting that many Americans still need to see more evidence before thinking he s guilty. Those who do have an opinion are steadfastly in the guilty camp, 39/20. Among Cosby s few remaining supporters are Americans, of whom a majority 51% still hold a favorable opinion of the actor/comedian. Americans are unconvinced of Cosby s culpability, 41/20, a 40-point swing from national opinion. Though America s Dad has been effectively excommunicated, the one Catholics call the Holy Father, Pope Francis, is enjoying widespread popularity at 61/20 favorability. The Pontiff polls in the 70s among very liberal, somewhat liberal, and moderate voters. Only 33% of very voters have a favorable opinion of the Pope, however. The cessation of the, a measure supported by Pope Francis, is divisive along party lines. A plurality (46%) of Republicans thinks the embargo should be reinstated, while a majority (61%) of Democrats supports its discontinuation. Hispanics are supportive of s reconciliation effort by a 32-point spread, 57/25. President s popularity has been on the rise lately, said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. One reason for that is the stance he has taken toward Cubamost Americans support the direction he s taken on that issue. Republicans strongly favor American Sniper for Best Picture at 53%. Democrats agree, but at a much more modest 23%. Selma is a close second for Democrats at 16%. PPP surveyed 612 American voters from January 22 nd to 25 th. The margin of error for the survey is +/- 4.0%. 80% of interviews for the poll were conducted over the phone with 20% interviewed over the internet to reach respondents who don t have landline telephones.
