1 Page 1 of 6 SOME CIRP ANALYSIS RESULTS Table 1 crosstabulates the two columns of responses to item 18: What is the highest academic degree that you intend to obtain? The two columns allow students to indicate the Highest planned (table rows) and the Highest planned at this institution (table columns). The numbers indicate some anomalies in the way students responded to the item. For example, there were 574 students with no response in the first column, 168 of whom indicated that they intended to earn a Bachelor s degree at UAB. Several of them also indicated that they intended to earn higher degrees at UAB. Another example shows up in the case where the highest degree planned is a Bachelor s but they go on to indicate that they will earn higher degrees at UAB. If we interpret the no response as equivalent to None for the highest degree planned at

2 Page 2 of 6 UAB, then it appears that only 42% of the population plans to earn a degree at UAB, and just 17% of the degrees are Bachelor s degrees, as shown in the bottom row of the table. These numbers are alarmingly low. If, on the other hand, we remove the non-responders, an entirely different picture emerges as shown in Table 2. From this table it appears that virtually everyone indicating an intention to earn a degree intends to do so at UAB since only 3% show up in the None column. For example, of the 279 people who indicated that their highest planned degree was a Master s, 47% indicate the highest degree planned at UAB is a Bachelor s while 46% indicate that it will be a Master s. The number planning to earn the Doctorate is even smaller at 35% while those planning on earning a medical degree at UAB if that is their planned terminal degree is quite high at 62%. Table 2. These responses were crosstabulated with a factor called relative degree level. To derive this factor each degree was assigned a number: other or associate = 0, bachelor s = 1, Master s = 2, Doctorate = 3, MD = 4. If the highest degree planned and the highest degree planned at UAB were equal then the relative degree level was assigned a value of same. If the highest degree planned was greater than the highest degree planned at UAB then the relative degree level was assigned a value of higher. Table 4 shows the results. Non-responders were not included in this analysis. It is clear that, for those students for whom UAB was their first choice, then 56% planned to earn their highest planned degree at UAB. If UAB was a second choice, then 56% planned to earn a lower degree at UAB than their highest planned degree. As UAB moves down the choice list, the percentage planning to earn a lower degree at UAB increases. Table 4. The relationship between how UAB ranked as a choice to attend and relative degree level. Table 5 shows the relation of family income to UAB as a choice. The row percentages basically indicate a preponderance of UAB as a first choice. However, a comparison of the maximum row and column percentages indicate that, for students whose family income is greater than or equal to $40,000, UAB is less likely to be a first choice. This indicated by the highlighted cells in each income bracket (green = max of colum % in each row; yellow = max of row % in each column)

6 Page 6 of 6 Table 6 shows the relation between UAB as a choice and the self -reported high school GPA. This table reveals less of a systematic relationship between HS GPA and choice. The row percentages by themselves again indicate a predominance of UAB as a first choice at each grade level. The column percentages by themselves indicate most students are in the B range. A comparison of row percentages by column and column percentages by row do not reveal any obvious preference by level of achievement. Table 6.
