Practice Test Set- 12 Solutions IBPS Clerk (Mains) Exam 2017 ENGLISH LANGUAGE 1. The passage talks about Schliemann and his excavation work. The last sentence talks about him 'believing' that he had found Homeric Troy. The whole passage also underlines this 'belief' or 'assumption' that he had made. This suggests that this 'belief' of his was not the truth. This is only shown by option C. Options A, B and D are not directly related to the tone of the passage, which highlights his uncritical treatment of the upper layers of excavation. Option E also seems like a viable option at a first glance, but it talks about the reception of his work and not the work itself, so it cannot be correct. Hence, option C must be the correct answer. 2. After reading the passage, we can see that it is about the comparison between the two Romantic age poets, Shelley and Keats. The passage begins with an introduction to Romantic poets and the last sentence describes the unique way of Shelley as a poet. Now, in order for the passage to be meaningful and complete, the description of Keats as a poet must also be given. Only option A provides that description. All the other options talk about things that are not directly related to the passage and its information. So, option A is the correct answer. 3. After reading the passage, it is clear that the passage is about the history of the Panama Canal. The last sentence of the passage talks about the potential of the canal, which means it talks about a time before it was built. The logical next sentence must be about its construction. Options C, D and E seem too vague to follow. Options A and B seem viable options, since both talk about the construction. Upon close reading, option A seems to follow option B in logical sequence, as option B talks about France attempting to build the canal, and option A talks about its apparent failure. So, option B is the correct answer. 4. The paragraph is about Calisthenics and its importance. The passage begins with the information about the people's perception and its real meaning. This means this must be a descriptive passage, telling us about calisthenics. After the introduction, such passages usually
elaborate about the name and its origin, as given by option C. Options A and B are not contextually related, so they cannot be correct. Sit-ups are mentioned within the passage but the passage is more about the group of exercises called 'calisthenics' than any one specific type of exercise or the place such as 'urban'. So, options D and E are ruled out. Option C is the correct answer. 5. Upon reading the passage, it is apparent that it talks about arbitrage and the exploration of the concept. The last sentence of the passage uses the expression, 'in simple terms', which means the next sentence must be simplifying the concept of arbitrage further, in order to understand it clearly. This is only given by option D. Rest of the options do not simplify or provide related information; so they cannot be correct. 6. The given word is a misfit as the article an has to be followed by a word that starts with a vowel sound. This eliminates option A and E. Out of the remaining choices, the most suitable word is appropriate which goes well with the context. 7. The word upheaval which means a violent or sudden change is not appropriate in the context. The phrase faster growth rate in the later part of the sentence validates revival as the best choice as the replacement of the given word. 8. Here the word in the context of the passage has to be the one that should suggest continual trouble or distress and among the choices available the word plagued replaces the word thrown best. 9. The word segment is appropriate in the context and needs no changes. 10. The word supportive is not suitable here as it s an adjective and the word for the blank has to be a noun. Out of the rest of the choices neither vow nor confession is fitting the blank appropriately. Clearly, the word reassurance is the most suitable word as the replacement for the word confidence in the given context. 11. Option D can be immediately eliminated because the phrasal verb deal in which refers to buying and selling something is not appropriate in the context. Option B is verbose as first starting with the one is a repetition which can be avoided with starting with the first. In option C, usage of passive voice (which is dealt with) doesn t make any sense and is hence erroneous. This eliminates option C as well. 12. Option A and B are erroneous because can return and returned are verb phrases which aren t parallel with the gerund phrase becoming bizarre. Options A and B hence get eliminated.
Option D, though, takes care of the parallel structure yet deviates the meaning of the sentence. Option C is the perfect choice among the given ones and must replace the bold part to make it a grammatically correct sentence. 13. The sentence is absolutely correct and thus needs no improvement. 14. The adjective tantamount which refers to being essentially equal to something is generally followed by the preposition to and not by of or with. The correct expression is tantamount to. This immediately eliminates options A and B. 15. Replete (Adjective): filled or well-supplied with something. The adjective is generally followed by the proposition 'with'. Moreover, the noun 'account' refers to a report or description of an event or experience and its plural form 'accounts' should be used here in the context. (16-20) The correct sequence is C-B-G-A-E-F-D Ans (21 to 25): REASONING
Ans (26 to 30): Ans 31: (D) They are usually mass-managed. Ans32: (D) From the passage, we examined that super markets are the next stage in the evolution of retailing. Ans 33: (A) Super markets are viable only in the bigger cities implies that the inference is definitely true. Ans 34: (E) From the passage, it is obvious that FDI in retail sector may reduce the number of kirana shops and retail shops. Hence the given inference is definitely false.
Ans35: (A) The passage clearly informs that the super markets are viable only in the bigger cities. This implies that super markets are not viable in the small towns. Ans (36 to 40): The machine rearranges words and numbers in such a way that numbers are arranged from right side and words are arranged from left side.
