3 SPEAKER PROFILEs Prof Benjamin Hughes, Independent Arbitrator and Associate Professor, Seoul National University School of Law Professor Benjamin Hughes is an independent arbitrator, associate professor at Seoul National University School of Law, and resident of The Arbitration Chambers in Singapore. He has extensive prior experience as counsel in international arbitrations around the world and under most major arbitration rules. He practiced international arbitration at a large US firm (in the US and Singapore), and was the founding co-chair of the international dispute resolution practice group at one of Korea s oldest and largest full service law firms. Ben ceased practice as a lawyer and has practiced as an independent arbitrator and mediator since March Since then, he has been appointed as the sole, chair or co-arbitrator in arbitrations under rules of the ICC, SIAC, HKIAC, UNCITRAL, KLRCA, CIETAC, ACICA and KCAB, as well as ad-hoc arbitrations. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators, the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators and the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration. He is Chair of the Korea Chapter of CIArb, Executive Committee Member of the Seoul International Dispute Resolution Center, Member of the International Arbitration Committee of the KCAB, and Director of the Korean Council for International Arbitration. He also serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Korean Law at SNU Law School and the Korean Arbitration Review of the KCAB. M. Husseyn Umar, Vice-Chairman, BANI Arbitration Center, Indonesia M. Husseyn Umar, SH, FCBArb, FCIArb, is the Chairman of BANI Arbitration Center and an arbitrator at the institution. Besides acting as arbitrator in ad hoc and BANI arbitrations, he has acted as arbitrator, counsel and expert in international arbitrations. He has also acted as expert witness in courts in various countries. Mr Umar has participated and have been invited to speak at various seminars/ workshops on international arbitration in Indonesia and abroad. Mr. Umar is listed as an arbitrator in the Panel of Arbitrators / Conciliators at the International Center for Investment Disputes (ICSID), Washington D.C. and in the Panel of Arbitrators at the Asia-Pacific Regional Arbitration Group (APRAG) in Sydney. Mr. Umar is also an Of Counsel in the Law Office of Ali Budiardjo, Nugroho, Reksodiputro (ABNR) in Jakarta. Before practicing law, he was a government official at the Ministry of Transport and Communications. He had been appointed as an Attache for Transport Communications and Maritime Affairs at the Indonesian Embassy in the Hague, Netherlands, Sectoral Adviser on Shipping, Ports, Multi-modal Transport and International Maritime Legislation at the Permanent Secretariat of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva, and President Director of Pelni National Shipping Company and PT PANN Ships Financing & Leasing Corporation. Mr. Umar published a few books and articles on maritime law and arbitration. Judith Gill QC, Partner, Allen & Overy LLP Ms Judith Gill QC has been a partner of Allen & Overy LLP since 1992 and specialises in both international commercial arbitration and investment treaty arbitration. Judith s practice covers a broad range of commercial dealings and includes acting both for and against government entities. She has extensive experience in both institutional and ad hoc arbitration. Judith primarily acts as lead counsel and was only the second woman solicitor-advocate to be appointed Queen s Counsel in England. She also sits as an arbitrator. In 2013 Judith was listed in the UK s top 10 SuperLawyers and more recently was voted the most highly regarded figure in international arbitration in Who s Who Legal She holds appointments at many arbitral institutions, including as President Elect and Director of the LCIA. Judith is also a former director of SIAC and a past Co-Chair of the Arbitration Committee of the International Bar Association. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies. Judith is also joint author of the last three editions of the leading textbook Russell on Arbitration and has published widely on arbitration issues. Judith relocated to Singapore in September Rob Palmer, Partner, Ashurst Rob Palmer is a Partner in Ashurst s dispute resolution team in Singapore. He has a particular focus on dispute resolution in international energy, construction and infrastructure projects. Rob has been based in Southeast Asia since 2003, including some years based in Jakarta, and has worked throughout the region. During that time he has conducted numerous arbitrations under the rules of major regional and international arbitral institutions including the SIAC, AAA, ICC, LCIA, KLRCA, TAI and BANI. Rob is qualified in New Zealand, New South Wales and England, and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators and the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA). He is a member of the panel of arbitrators of the KLRCA and the ACICA and is listed in legal directories as one of Singapore s leading construction lawyers. Chalid Heyder, Partner, Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung Chalid is a partner at Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung where he leads the firm s top tier Disputes practice. He has been a trial lawyer for 15 years. Chalid advises and represents Indonesian and international clients in significant contentious matters, including commercial disputes, bankruptcy, and white collar crime. He has extensive experience in both international and domestic arbitration and arbitration related court proceedings, including in relation to the enforcement of foreign arbitration awards. Chalid has also worked at Herbert Smith Freehills on secondment in Hong Kong and Singapore. Antony Crockett, International Counsel, Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung Antony Crockett is based in Jakarta, practising as International Counsel with Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung (on secondment from Herbert Smith Freehills). Antony is an international law and dispute resolution specialist with extensive experience in international commercial arbitration, investment treaty arbitration and complex cross border litigation. Antony has acted as counsel in arbitration proceedings conducted under BANI, GAFTA, HKIAC, ICC, ICSID, LCIA, PCA, SIAC, Swiss and UNCITRAL Rules, as well as advising clients in relation to mediation and expert determination proceedings. Antony holds an LLB (with First Class Honours) and BSc from the University of Melbourne, and an LLM (with Distinction) from the London School of Economics and Political Science. He is admitted as a solicitor in England & Wales, as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria, Australia and as a Solicitor of the High Court of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. He has previously practised in London, Singapore and Hong Kong. Antony is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a Fellow of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA). Karen Mills, Founding Member and International Legal Counsel, KarimSyah Law Firm Karen Mills, a founder of the KarimSyah Law Firm of Jakarta, has practiced in Indonesia for 30 years. A Chartered Arbitrator, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators ( CIArb ) and of the Singapore and Hong Kong Institutes, Ms. Mills founded and co-chairs the Indonesian Chapter of CIArb, is on the panel of arbitrators of most arbitral institutions in the region, including those in Indonesia, China. Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea, and the Philippines, as well as the AAA/ICDR panel. A graduate of New York University School of Law and member of the New York Bar, Ms. Mills s substantive fields of specialization include financing and restructuring, oil, gas, mining and energy matters, hotel and leisure management, insurance, maritime law, information technology and general crossborder investment and transactions. She frequently sits as arbitrator in all manner of commercial disputes, acts as lead counsel for the Indonesian government in investment disputes, and has published over 130 papers in international professional books and journals. Contact: kmills@cbn.net.id Ilman Rakhmat, Partner, KarimSyah Law Firm Ilman Rakhmat, a Partner of KarimSyah Law Firm, is one of the upcoming arbitration lawyers in Indonesia. His legal practice of over ten years includes being a key member of the team which successfully won an UNCITRAL arbitration for the Indonesian Government and a SIAC arbitration for Indonesia s biggest state-owned company, and recently, an ICSID arbitration for the Indonesian Government against a claim from a British investor. He has been acting as counsel in commercial arbitrations conducted under the Rules of ICC, UNCITRAL, SIAC, ICSID, BANI and the Indonesian Sharia Arbitration Board. Maria-Krystyna Duval, Managing Counsel, Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre Maria-Krystyna Duval is Managing Counsel of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC). Ms Duval supports the work of Secretary General Chiann Bao to promote the use of HKIAC arbitration and other forms of dispute resolution worldwide. Ms Duval has substantial experience in the field of international arbitration, having worked with several major international law firms in Paris and London as well as a number of international organisations. She has experience advising on a wide range of proceedings including international commercial and investment arbitrations conducted under the ICC, LCIA, SCC, UNCITRAL and ICSID Rules as well as associated court proceedings. She also has considerable experience advising on fraud, corruption and bribery issues as well as international human rights. Ms Duval is a Visiting Fellow in the Dickson Poon School of Law at King s College, London where she has been teaching on the L.L.M Programme since Ms Duval holds a Certificate in International Arbitration from Cornell University and Paris I Sorbonne, a Masters in Political Science from the Paris Institut d Etudes Politiques and a Masters in International Business and Politics from New York University s Stern School of Business and Department of Politics. Ms Duval is a native English and French speaker, is highly proficient in Italian, German and Russian, with intermediate Spanish and Mandarin skills. She is a Solicitor Advocate admitted to practice in England. Sylvia Tee, Director, Arbitration & ADR, Asia, International Chamber of Commerce, Ms Sylvia Tee joined the International Chamber of Commerce as the Director of Arbitration & ADR, Asia on 12 November As regional director, she is responsible for raising awareness of the range of dispute resolution services available in Asia under the ICC, and coordinating the activities of the ICC Young Arbitrators Forum across Asia. Prior to joining the ICC, Ms Tee practiced in the Dispute Resolution Department of Allen & Gledhill LLP, a leading law firm in Singapore.
