2 ABOUT THE CONFERENCE Istanbul Arbitration Centre is delighted to host the conference Launching Your Arbitration, jointly with the Swiss law firm Peter & Partners. Conference topic Parties face legal, practical and tactical challenges right at the beginning of an arbitration. For example, they need to consider whether to present their claims and defences in the Request for Arbitration or Answer in detail or only in general terms. They also need to decide how to set out prayers for relief and to what extent to quantify claims for damages at the outset. Respondents may also need to decide whether to bring a counterclaim or to challenge jurisdiction. Importantly, parties must choose arbitrators who are suitably qualified to decide the case. Making the right choices early on will give a party a tactical advantage. This conference brings together highly experienced speakers from Turkey as well as different common and civil law jurisdictions who will offer advice and share insights into the perspectives of both arbitrators and counsel. Who should attend? The event is intended to be practical in its approach. It will be of special interest to both arbitration lawyers and general commercial lawyers, as well as in-house counsel and business people who are involved in commercial disputes in Turkey or internationally. This conference will be conducted in English.

4 SPEAKERS Ziya AKINCI Ziya Akinci, is the founding partner of Akinci Law Office, carries out his duty as the President of Istanbul Arbitration Centre (ISTAC). Dr. Akinci is a member of the ICSID Committee and also a former member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration. Dr. Akinci focuses primarily on dispute resolution and has acted as counsel, expert, sole arbitrator and co-arbitrator in many international and domestic proceedings including international construction projects, energy projects, investment disputes, mergers and acquisitions, international commercial disputes. He has authored numerous publications on topics including but not limited to international arbitration, international construction law, applicable law to the contracts and the international carriage of goods by road. He is head of the International Private Law Division of Galatasaray University Faculty of Law. Harold FREY Harold Frey leads the Arbitration and Litigation practice of Lenz & Staehelin in Zurich. He has represented clients in numerous international arbitrations as well as in litigation proceedings before Swiss courts. Matters included a wide range of legal issues (such as joint venture, M&A, licensing and general contract law disputes) and industries (such as telecom, pharmaceutical, industrial and construction). Harold Frey also sits as arbitrator. Legal 500 described him as outstanding (2011 ed.) and ranked him as a leading litigator in Switzerland for the last seven years. Chambers Global recognized him as very bright and skilled with a perfect feeling for the needs of the client (2012 ed.), extremely gifted (2013 ed.) and a very good operator who handles his cases well (2015 ed.). Clients describe him as a top litigator: very careful, meticulous and experienced. He writes excellent briefs and is a pleasure to work with (Chambers Europe 2017). Daniel GREINEDER Daniel Greineder is an English-qualified barrister and Partner of Peter & Partners, a specialist dispute resolution practice in Geneva, Switzerland. He worked as an Associate in the arbitration group of WilmerHale in London for over three years before moving to Switzerland in As counsel, Daniel Greineder advises and represents parties to arbitrations. He also welcomes arbitrator appointments and advises on contentious matters. Daniel Greineder often works in a team with lawyers from different common and civil law backgrounds. Much of his work involves foreign law. He has acted for Turkish companies in post-m&a, JV and construction disputes. He also has particular experience of the energy sector, including long-term sales agreements for LNG and electricity, as well as gas exploration projects. Daniel Greineder is ranked as a Future Leader in arbitration and leading construction lawyer in Who s Who Legal 2018, and was educated at Oxford University and City University, London. Lucy MARTINEZ Lucy Martinez is an independent counsel and arbitrator based in London and Australia. She has represented private and sovereign clients in AAA, ICC, ICSID, LCIA, SIAC, UNCITRAL, and ad hoc arbitrations, pursuant to investment treaties and contracts; sat as arbitrator in ICC, LCIA, and SIAC disputes; and advised on international pro bono projects. She has worked at Three Crowns (London), Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (London/New York), White & Case (New York), Columbia Law School, University of Sydney, University of New South Wales, and University of Queensland, and clerked at the High Court of Australia and the Queensland Court of Appeal.

5 SPEAKERS Paolo Michele PATOCCHI Paolo Michele Patocchi is one of the founding partners of Patocchi & Marzolini, the law firm specialised in international arbitration and litigation established with Avv. Paolo Marzolini. Prior to 2014, Michele has led the arbitration practice group of a national Swiss law firm ( ). He has also worked in a major US law firm in London ( ) and another leading Swiss law firm in Zurich ( ). Michele acts as counsel and sits as an arbitrator under various arbitration rules or in ICSID arbitration, in cases conducted in English, French, German, Italian or Spanish. Michele has been involved in more than 220 arbitrations to date. Aside from Swiss law and international law, Michele has had practical experience in a number of other systems of law. Michele has been teaching International Arbitration since 2013 at the İ. D. Bilkent University in Ankara. Michele has published extensively on international arbitration and litigation. Wolfgang PETER Wolfgang Peter was a founding Partner of Peter & Partners, a specialist dispute resolution practice in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2016 and is recognized by clients and peers alike as one of the leading counsels and arbitrators both in Europe and globally. Before his new venture, Dr. Peter founded Python & Peter in 1982, where he headed the arbitration group, and was CEO of two luxury watch-making companies for 12 years. Dr. Peter is particularly active in cases involving complex damages calculations and valuations, including post-m&a disputes, shareholder disputes, joint ventures and projects stemming from the energy sector especially oil and gas and heavy industry. Dr. Peter regularly advises on contentious matters and contract renegotiations. He is also instructed by third-party funders to evaluate the merits of claims, especially with regard to damages. An active speaker and contributor to the arbitration community, he is a member of the LCIA Board of Directors and the ASA Board. Flore POLONI Flore Poloni is a Counsel in August Debouzy s Litigation, Arbitration and White Collar crime practice group in Paris, France. She represents companies from around the globe in pre-litigation, mediation, litigation and arbitration proceedings across a wide range of international disputes, with a focus on industrial clients operating in sectors such as defense, automotive or chemicals. She has notably spent 18 months on secondment with a client s litigation and claim management team in the defense sector. She frequently participates as counsel in shareholders disputes and in cases involving cross-border transactions. She has solid experience in the enforcement of arbitral awards in France including seizing assets. Flore is very involved in the arbitration community in France as she co-founded the Paris Very Young Arbitration Practitioners group in She is today one of the Co-chairs of the LCIA-YIAG. A French national, Flore works in French and English. Candan YASAN Candan Yasan serves as Secretary General of the Istanbul Arbitration Centre (ISTAC) and, in that capacity, she has been involved in several domestic and international arbitrations. She also contributed to the drafting of the ISTAC Arbitration and Mediation Rules and holds a seat on the ISTAC Boards of Arbitration. In addition to her practice, Candan is a member of Private International Law Department at Istanbul Bilgi University where she teaches classes on private international law and international commercial law. Candan completed her graduate and post-graduate studies in Istanbul (Galatasaray University, Ph.D, 2015 and LL.M., 2009). She obtained Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship and worked as a visiting fellowship at Swiss Institute of Comparative Law in the period Her practice and research focus on commercial arbitration, international dispute settlement. She is admitted to the Istanbul Bar and also a member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR.

Cancellation and Substitution Policy A substitute delegate is welcome at any time and no extra charge if you are unable to attend. Full payment will be imposed if cancellation is made within 10 days of the event date. This also applies to any no-shows on the day of event. All notices of cancellations or replacements must be made in writing to istac@istac.org.tr and must be acknowledged by ISTAC.
