Explore Costa Rica on this trip that combines jungle adventure and beach relaxation in a spectacular setting. Get wet whitewater rafting, or float along the Sarapiquí River at a more leisurely pace looking for wildlife. Walk with local researchers through La Selva Biological Station, an important center for rainforest research. Then, travel to Arenal Volcano National Park, home of the tropical Arenal Volcano. Volcanologists from all over the world come here to study the volcano, and clouds of ash and occasional lava are still seen from safe vantage points. During a guided rainforest walk, see some of the plants, birds, and other animal species that call the rainforest home. Swing through the trees like a modern-day Tarzan on a zip-line, and relax in the soothing thermal waters of a natural hot spring. Switch gears and relax on one of Costa Rica s most beautiful Pacific coast beaches. Walk along nature trails in Manuel Antonio National Park and spot brilliantly colored scarlet macaws, sloths, and capuchin monkeys playing in the trees, or cruise along the shoreline while snorkeling and dolphin-watching. Best Regards, Kate Heilman Associate Director, Travel and Education Alumni Relations & Annual Giving Faculty Leader Melina Hale, PhD 98, is a professor in the Department of Organismal Biology and Anatomy and on the Committees on Neurobiology and Computational Neuroscience in the Biological Sciences Division. Hale s research explores how the brain and spinal cord generate movements and how movement systems change through development and evolution. Her current research includes understanding how sensation of the mechanics of movement modulate behaviors as part of a project with engineers to develop autonomous undersea vehicles. She uses the zebrafish genetic model systems for her work in the laboratory but also has performed fieldwork and marine lab based work in diverse marine environments. Hale teaches undergraduate, graduate, and medical students and has won both undergraduate and graduate teaching awards and been a National Academies Education Fellow. She has received a number of grants, including a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation. Tour Leader Julio Madriz has been working as a guide in Costa Rica for more than 20 years. He studied microbiology for 3 years at the University of Costa Rica and is a certified naturalist guide. Julio has been involved as a field assistant for several scientific projects, and was a coordinator for the production of naturalist videos for National Geographic, the BBC, and Lonely Planet. 3 Day by Day Itinerary MARCH 8TH - 14TH March 8: San José, Costa Rica / Braulio Carrillo National Park Depart the U.S. and arrive into San José International Airport (SJO). Meet your guide and driver outside the baggage collection area and transfer approximately 2 hours to our jungle lodge, located on a private ranch and nature reserve near the Braulio Carrillo National Park. Depending on your arrival time enjoy an afternoon at our lodge or retire for the evening. Overnight: Hotel Hacienda Sueño Azul March 9: Braulio Carrillo National Park Today, choose between a whitewater rafting adventure (Class III-IV) or a gentle boat excursion on the Sarapiquí River (Class II). The Sarapiquí is one of Costa Rica s most accessible rivers, with breathtaking scenery and a lush rain forest running along the banks of its crystal-clear waters. Both excursions provide opportunities to see a diversity of wildlife in a spectacular tropical setting. After lunch, transfer back to the lodge and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure. Enjoy a welcome reception and dinner together at the hotel this evening. Overnight: Hotel Hacienda Sueño Azul (B, L, D) March 10: Braulio Carrillo National Park / Arenal Volcano National Park After breakfast, embark upon a half-day visit to La Selva Biological Station, located in the Caribbean lowlands of northeastern Costa Rica. La Selva Biological Station was originally established in 1954 as a farm dedicated to experimentation on mixed plantations to improve natural resources management. It was purchased in 1968 by the Organization for Tropical Studies and declared a private biological reserve and station. Since then, it has become one of the most important sites in the world for research on tropical rainforests. Enjoy a guided nature walk through the reserve with a local researcher. After lunch, transfer to the Arenal Volcano region and enjoy dinner together this evening. Overnight: Arenal Observatory Lodge (B, L, D) March 11: Arenal Volcano National Park Dormant for decades, the Arenal Volcano exploded in a massive eruption of molten lava and ash in The volcano has continued to belch great clouds of ash and occasional lava, including a series of large eruptions as recently as The Arenal Volcano is 5,358 feet high and 4,000 years old. This morning, take a guided rain forest walk along the lava-landscaped paths near the base of the Arenal Volcano and see some of the plants, birds, and other animal species in this rainforest ecosystem. In the afternoon, enjoy a visit to the thermal waters of a nearby hot springs resort, nestled amid the lush tropical vegetation near the base of the Arenal Volcano. The 4 pools with naturally heated waters spring forth at between 91 F and 105 F year-round. After a relaxing soak in the springs, join the group for dinner before returning to the hotel. Overnight: Arenal Observatory Lodge (B, D) March 12: Arenal Volcano National Park / Central Pacific Coast After breakfast, explore the rainforest canopy via a Costa Rican zip-line canopy tour. Traverse from tree to tree and platform to platform, sailing through the treetops of the tropical rainforest canopy, over the trails far below. Expert guides will assist us in this exciting zip-line journey through the different layers of the virgin rainforest. This afternoon, drive to one of Costa Rica s sunny Pacific coast beaches, near the beaches of Jacó and Herradura, and settle into your resort hotel. Overnight: Villa Caletas (B) March 13: Central Pacific Coast After breakfast, drive to Manuel Antonio National Park, one of Costa Rica s most popular wildlife reserves, and enjoy a snorkeling, sailing, and dolphin-watching excursion along the coastline or take a guided nature walk. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure. Gather this evening for a farewell reception and dinner as well as an opportunity to reflect on our adventures from the past week! 5 TERMS AND CONDITIONS Single Supplements All trip prices are based on double occupancy in tents, lodges and hotels. Single accommodation can often be arranged for an extra cost, but may be limited according to the availability of rooms or camping space. If you are traveling alone and wish to share accommodation, Global Adrenaline, Inc. will do its best to assign you a roommate of the same gender. If a roommate is not available, a single supplement will apply. Price Increases The price quoted in your trip documents is subject to change because the information has often been published far in advance. While every effort will be made to carry out the program as planned, the itinerary as described is subject to modification by Global Adrenaline. The program price is based upon current airfares, tariffs, and currency values in effect August While Global Adrenaline will use its commercially reasonable best skills to maintain the listed price, tour costs are subject to change. If it is necessary to levy a surcharge, notification will be given days before departure. If the surcharge results in an increase of more than 10% of the tour cost, a participant may cancel the booking within 14 days of the surcharge notification and obtain a refund from Global Adrenaline of all deposits and other payments. Group Sizes The trip price is based on a group size of 20 paying trip participants. Should the total number of participants fall below 20, a price surcharge may apply. If it is necessary to levy a small group surcharge, Global Adrenaline, Inc. will notify the participant days prior to trip departure. If the surcharge results in an increase of more than 10% of the trip price, the participant may cancel their booking within 14 days of the surcharge notification and obtain a full refund. Deposits A non-refundable deposit of $750 per person per trip is required to reserve space on a Global Adrenaline, Inc. trip. Payment can be made by check, money order, credit card (Visa, MasterCard, or American Express) or wire transfer. If a reservation is made 90 days or less before the trip departure, then the full trip payment is due at the time of booking. Final Payments You will be invoiced later for the final payment which can be made by check, money order, credit card (Visa, MasterCard or American Express) or wire transfer. Final payment is due 90 days prior to trip departure. If the final payment is late, a $250 late penalty will be added. If the final payment is not received within 90 days of the trip departure, Global Adrenaline, Inc. reserves the right to treat the reservation as cancelled. Transfers You may transfer your deposit or payment to another Global Adrenaline, Inc. trip without penalty provided that you notify us of your wish to transfer more than 90 days prior to departure and provided that critical trip components (e.g. accommodations, flights, activity bookings and permits) are transferrable. After that time, you are subject to the cancellation fees outlined below. You may also transfer your tour to another person if you are prevented from traveling due to serious illness, death or serious illness of a close family relative, jury service or if you have any other personal or work related conflicts. Written proof and reasonable notice of circumstance must be given. If Global Adrenaline, Inc. accepts the transfer, only the original trip participant can transfer his/her booking to another person. That person must submit a Trip Application Form and Trip Waiver Form, must be suitable for the trip, and must pay any outstanding balance and any necessary/relevant change or rebooking fees. Cancellation Policy If it becomes necessary to cancel a Global Adrenaline, Inc. trip, the following cancellation fees apply from the date Global Adrenaline, Inc. receives written notice that you must cancel your trip. Global Adrenaline, Inc.'s cancellation policy applies in every instance. There will be no exceptions for any reasons. Once you have been confirmed on a trip that requires a medical certificate signed by a doctor, normal cancellation penalties apply if your doctor does not sign the certificate. Global Adrenaline, Inc. highly recommends that all clients purchase trip cancellation insurance. Over 90 days prior to departure: Loss of $750 deposit 0 to 90 days prior to departure: 100% of trip price is non-refundable Cancelled Trips Global Adrenaline, Inc. reserves the right to cancel any trip prior to departure for any reason whatsoever, including insufficient enrollment or logistical problems that may impede trip operations. The refund of all trip price payments received shall release Global Adrenaline, Inc. from any further liability. A trip with insufficient enrollment would normally be cancelled days prior to departure. Global Adrenaline, Inc. must normally make substantial payments to its suppliers (hotels, transportation companies, etc.) far in advance of the scheduled trip departure date. If a trip is cancelled due to force majeure (e.g. acts of God, war, labor strikes, earthquake, flooding, etc.) Global Adrenaline, Inc. will promptly refund the portion of the trip price not already advanced to suppliers and use its best efforts to recover and refund the balance as promptly as possible. However, Global Adrenaline, Inc. does not guarantee recovery of any or all of the advance payments made, and its use of best efforts to recover these payments will not include the institution of any legal proceedings in foreign jurisdictions.global Adrenaline, Inc. is not responsible for any expenses incurred by trip participants in preparing for a cancelled trip (e.g. non-refundable advance purchase air tickets, visa fees, medical expenses, equipment purchases, etc.) or for any additional arrangements should the trip participant have embarked prior to the scheduled group departure date. Health Requirements You must be in good physical and mental health to participate in your trip. Any physical condition requiring special attention, diet or treatment must be reported in writing when the reservation is made. By registering and paying a deposit for a trip, the trip participant certifies that he/she does not have any mental, physical or other condition or disability that would create a hazard for him/herself or other trip participants. All trip participants must complete a Global Adrenaline, Inc. Medical History and Release Form and have this form signed by a qualified physician. If the Medical History and Release Form is not received within 90 days of the trip departure or within 2 weeks of trip registration (if trip registration was received less than 90 days prior to departure), Global Adrenaline, Inc. reserves the right to treat the reservation as cancelled. Global Adrenaline, Inc. reserves the right to decline to accept or to restrain from further participation any person it judges to be incapable of meeting the rigors and requirements of participating in the trip activities, or any person whose actions or deportment it judges unsuitable for group travel. Global Adrenaline, Inc. will enact this right when such action is determined to be in the best interest of the health, safety, and general welfare of the group or an individual trip participant. A refund based on the cost of any unused land services already paid for is the limit of Global Adrenaline, Inc. s responsibility in such a case. Medical Insurance By registering and paying a deposit for a trip, the trip participant certifies that he/she has medical insurance which will cover personal accidents, medical expenses, medical evacuation, air ambulance, loss of effects, repatriation costs and all other expenses which might arise as a result of loss, damage, injury, delay or inconvenience occurring to the trip participant or that in the absence of this medical insurance coverage, the trip participant agrees to pay all costs of rescue and/or medical services as may be incurred on his/her behalf. Eligibility Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the entire journey. For trekking trips, the minimum age is 15 years old. Otherwise, there are no age restrictions, but all participants must be in good health. Limitation of Liability Global Adrenaline, Inc. and The University of Chicago Alumni Association give notice that services provided in connection with its itineraries, including transportation, hotel accommodation, restaurants and other services are purchased from various independent suppliers who are not affiliated with Global Adrenaline, Inc. and The University of Chicago Alumni Association in any way. Although we endeavor to choose the best suppliers available, Global Adrenaline, Inc. and The University of Chicago Alumni Association have no right to control their operations and therefore makes these travel arrangements upon the express condition that Global Adrenaline, Inc. and The University of Chicago Alumni Association and its own agents and employees shall not be liable for any delay, mishap, inconvenience, expense, irregularity, bodily injury or death to person or damage to property occasioned through the conduct or default of any company or individual engaged in providing these services. Each of these passenger conveyance companies, tour companies, hotels, restaurants, guides, etc. is subject to the laws of the state or country where the services is provided.
