The Netbook Offer In recent years our college has begun the implementation of a one to one netbook program. The netbook technology has been embraced by students and staff. We believe they are a tool that our students need if we are to prepare them appropriately for the 21 st century. For 2016 the school has selected the LENOVO - THINKPAD 11E 11.6" NETBOOK as the best value package for students. Parents are expected to participate in a rent to own scheme (see page 2) There are two methods of rental, both require parents to pay through the school s payment portal which can be found at the school s website. Google mnsc or go to Then click on the Netbook Collection Portal Link, which can be found under Booklists. See below Hover over Booklists, then select 1. Pay $580 up front and go into the draw to win the netbook rental for free. 2. Pay 24 monthly payments $25.58 a total of $ (the $34.00 cost difference is the cost of providing the collection portal) IMPORTANT Parents need to have signed up to the portal by Friday November 27 th 2015 to secure the order for the child s netbook This Package is Outstanding Value and we expect parents to support this scheme as it supports the college learning program. The netbooks are: Provided by the school configured for internet and printing at the school, with school funded insurance (page 3) with support from our IT Services department 1. Provided by LWT with 3 Years Onsite warranty and an appropriate case 2. Configured by the Department with the Department s School Technology Architecture and Resources (edustar) standard platform. The edustar program provides over 80 software applications. We have costed the software at over $450. The broad range of applications cover: animation, digital video, image creation, drawing and painting thinking skills, concept and Mind Mapping Page 2
interactive curriculum resources logic and problem-solving, 3D modelling and game-making presentation, multimedia tools, writing tools, web authoring tools and typing tutors sound and music making NB Students are not able to bring their own netbooks / laptops to school as we would not be able to provide IT support for the many different types of computers. Also only school owned netbooks may have the edustar software suite (mentioned previously). Page 3
The School Owns the Netbook While students will have the netbook 24/7 it will be owned by the school which will enable students to have the Secondary edustar software suite on the netbook. Licensing agreements dictate that the Secondary edustar software suite is only permitted on school owned devices. Ownership of the netbook is transferred to the student once all of the following three conditions have been met. 1. Full payment has been received ($580 up front or 24 monthly payments $ $614). 2. The netbook is submitted to our IT services department so it can be reimaged without the Department software as per the Department licensing agreement. 3. The student leaves the school. What happens if my child leaves the school and I don t want to own the Netbook? Parents need to be aware that if a student leaves the Mirboo North Secondary College the parent / guardian has a legal obligation to return the netbook to the school. If this doesn t happen the police will be contacted to secure its return. Insurance The cost of insuring the netbooks through an insurance company was deemed to be cost prohibitive, so the school has decided to self insure. Thus in the case of accidental damage or theft, a school insurance claim form will need to be completed and submitted to the IT Services Office. Excess Payments Please Note If the entire Netbook needs to be replaced (eg. theft, lost, severe damage) then the excess is $250. For any other claim the excess will be $150. Damage that is deliberate or caused through extreme misuse, or extreme negligence of the netbook will not be covered by insurance and the cost of the repair will be billed to the student. Service and Support Only the school is authorised to the repair hardware faults. Under no circumstances should families attempt to repair a hardware fault. Students who need support / repair with their netbook should report to the IT Services office. Page 4
Netbook Agreement General The netbook remains the property of Mirboo North Secondary College. It is the responsibility of the student to return the netbook in good working order prior to leaving the school. Please Note: Upon purchase of the netbook, it must be reimaged by IT Services without the Department software. Repair Guidelines 1. The School is responsible for the repair of the netbooks. 2. User data integrity, storage and backup are the direct responsibility of the user. The School shall accept no liability for the loss of data during repair and/or modification of either software or hardware. 3. The School is not responsible for the configuration of home networks or home internet accounts on student Netbooks. 4. During long-term repair (a week or more), the School shall take all reasonable steps as deemed by the School to supply a "loan" Netbook to the user of the machine under repair. However, the School will not accept responsibility or liability for lack of completion of schoolwork. 5. All repairs affected under insurance claims cannot be executed until the relevant insurance claim form has been submitted, and the School receives the appropriate excess fee (See Page 3). Use of the Netbook 1. Students are expected to bring the netbook to school each day so they are available should a teacher request their use during a lesson. The use of the netbook must comply with the school s Digital Technologies Acceptable Use Agreement (attached). In particular, the netbook is to be used only for educational purposes during class time. Teachers may choose to confiscate the netbook if the netbook is used inappropriately. A confiscated netbook is not an acceptable reason for late work. 2. As stated above data integrity, storage and backup are the direct responsibility of the student. All students should have back-up copies of their work. Therefore, hardware or software failure should not prevent the student from submitting work on time. The computer crashing is not an acceptable reason for late work. 3. It is the responsibility of each student to bring the Netbook to school each day with a fully charged battery. 4. Power and network outlets are available in classrooms. If you need to use these outlets, do so with the comfort and security of others in mind, making sure that the cords are carefully laid out to avoid tripping. 5. Your Netbook comes with a carry case. This provides some protection it may not protect the Netbook from a severe impact so care should be taken in holding, fastening and placing the case down. Page 5
6. The case must be used when carrying the Netbook around the school; otherwise it will not be covered by insurance. 7. Never lift the Netbook by the screen. This will stress the hinge mechanism, which also carries the power supply to the screen. 8. The Netbook must be locked away in your locker when not required in class (e.g. Phys. Ed., recess, lunchtime, etc.). It should never be left unattended. 9. Stickers are not to be placed on the netbook, or the case marked in any way. 10. Any student who finds an unattended Netbook should take it to the nearest teacher or staff room. The teacher will take the Netbook to I.T. Services and the owner of the Netbook must collect it in person from I.T. Services. Page 6
Digital Technologies Acceptable Use Agreement Mirboo North Secondary College recognises the need for students to be safe and responsible users of digital technologies. We believe that explicitly teaching students about safe and responsible online behaviours is essential and is best taught in partnership with parents/guardians. We request that parents/guardians work with us and encourage this behaviour at home. NB Parents/guardians and students should be aware that files stored on netbooks, laptops or on the school s server, are not private. When I use digital technologies I agree to be a safe, responsible and ethical user at all times, by: Respecting others and communicating with them in a supportive manner; never writing or participating in online bullying (for example, forwarding messages and supporting others in harmful, inappropriate or hurtful online behaviours) Protecting my privacy; not giving out personal details, including my full name, telephone number, address, passwords and images Protecting the privacy of others; never posting or forwarding their personal details or images without their consent Talking to a teacher if I personally feel uncomfortable or unsafe online, or if I see others participating in unsafe, inappropriate or hurtful online behaviours Carefully considering the content that I upload or post online; this is often viewed as a personal reflection of who I am Investigating the terms and conditions (e.g. age restrictions, parental consent requirements). If my understanding is unclear I will seek further explanation from a trusted adult Handling ICT devices with care and notifying a teacher if it is damaged or requires attention Abiding by copyright and intellectual property regulations. If necessary, I will request permission to use images, text, audio and video and cite references Not interfering with network systems and security, the data of another user or attempting to log into the network with a user name or password of another student Not bringing to school or downloading unauthorized programs, and/or content, including content that is pornographic or vilifies, defames, degrades or humiliates another person Only accessing the internet at school through the school s approved proxy server (set as the default proxy setting) Page 7
