Distribution Growth 60% Growth in Career Field Force Enterprise Sales $1.3 Billion 33% Life Insurance Sales Growth Asset Growth $21.8 Billion OneAmerica s stability, strength and value proposition have attracted a record number of new distribution professionals. In a changing marketplace, the value of traditional life insurance and the importance of retirement planning yielded strong sales growth. OneAmerica assets grew by $3 billion to a record $21.8 billion.

Growing to serve OneAmerica remains focused on what is best for our customers Dayton H. Molendorp Chairman, President and CEO

By most measures, our performance in 2009 was the best in our history. Sales of our core products grew strongly, more distributors joined us than ever before and our financial results set records. Given the turmoil in the economy, these results are extraordinary. For 132 years, OneAmerica has been focused on protecting everyday Americans from financial uncertainty and helping them build and secure their financial futures. We accomplish this mission by combining strong life insurance, retirement, and employee benefits products with the counsel of a trusted financial professional. Along the way, we have grown from a small company to a multibillion dollar enterprise known for strength and growth. OneAmerica s uncompromising commitment to the long-term best interests of our customers is the foundation of our success. As a mutual insurance organization, we do not answer to outside shareholders or Wall Street. Our focus remains squarely on the customers we serve. Our long-term focus prompted us to reduce risk in the months leading up to the financial crisis. In addition, we stayed with product and service offerings that made sense for customers to own for the long term. Our preparation enabled us to perform well during the crisis and to take advantage of opportunities created by the environment. We experienced minimal financial pressure as a result of the crisis because of the conservative profile of our investments and our strong risk-management practices. Because of our financial strength, we were able to continue to invest in reaching and serving more customers while many companies were forced to retrench. We aggressively invested in building distribution and were able to take advantage of market conditions to improve our financial position. The market turmoil reminded Americans of the value of products that provide solid returns and protection over the long term. Also, distributors were reminded of the value of a company that is committed to financial strength in any environment and to investing in their success. As a result, we were able to grow and strengthen our enterprise in nearly every respect. Our success during 2009 was a result of our timeless values that never go out of style putting customers first, treating people fairly and investing for the long term. That s mutual. That s OneAmerica. This report will highlight stories from our customers and colleagues which demonstrate OneAmerica s strength and success in providing solutions that allow our customers to take control of their financial futures. A strong, growing mutual insurance holding company we are a mutual insurance organization that traces its roots back to OneAmerica s insurance companies are highly rated and maintain extremely strong capital to protect policyholders. we rely on trusted financial professionals as the link to policyholders in each of our businesses. The companies of OneAmerica offer a diverse portfolio of products and services, including: Individual life insurance and annuities Asset-based long-term care solutions Retirement plans, including 401(k), 403(b) and 457 plans Employee benefit plans, including traditional and voluntary group life and disability plans and self-funded medical plans

Building bridges Trusted financial professionals support products with personal commitment Wilma Hill (center) meets with Ron Remak and Danell Witmer of Bill C. Brown Associates

You d be hard pressed to find anyone in Bloomington, Indiana, who hasn t heard of American United Life Insurance Company General Agent Ron Remak and his firm Bill C. Brown Associates. For more than half a century, Bill C. Brown Associates has provided insurance and wealth management tools from the companies of OneAmerica to more than 12,000 individuals. One of our mantras is service, says Ron. We believe in serving our community, helping people secure their futures and keeping the promises we make. We know that OneAmerica shares those values, and that makes us a perfect match. For Bill C. Brown Associates, those aren t just words; the firm lives its philosophy of community service by supporting human service agencies, schools and many other community organizations in the Bloomington area. It s those kinds of connections that make strong general agencies the perfect bridge between the companies of OneAmerica and their customers. OneAmerica s mutual heritage has enabled Ron and all of our agents to focus on customers needs. In these turbulent economic times, the companies of OneAmerica have remained strong and stable, continuing to provide quality products and exceptional service. How does that work? Ask Wilma Hill. More than 15 years ago, her husband, Art, worked with Ron to create solutions from American United Life to provide for Wilma s long-term security in case something happened to Art. Art passed away unexpectedly a short time later. American United Life promptly processed and paid life insurance benefits to Wilma. Since then, Wilma and Ron have worked with American United Life s customer service unit to be sure that annuity benefits, which Wilma also owns, are delivered to her in a prompt, respectful and consistent manner. Our customer service associates work with agents, policyholders and beneficiaries every day to deliver on our promises. Agents have come to rely on the companies of OneAmerica for support of their mission so their customers can say what Wilma has said about Ron. I don t know what I d do sometimes without Ron helping me out, Wilma says. I have to have somebody who is honest enough to really tell me what things mean. By working with agents like Ron Remak, the companies of OneAmerica create relationships that go far deeper than any policy or product. Ron F. Remak General Agent Bill C. Brown Associates OneAmerica s Network of Agents and Brokers OneAmerica s life insurance companies share a commitment to serve customers through the advice and counsel of trusted financial professionals. OneAmerica s vibrant career field force grew 60 percent in Many new producers were driven to our strength, stability and value proposition. In addition to career agents, the companies of OneAmerica serve customers through a network of personal producing general agents, brokers and trusted financial professionals. At OneAmerica, we have built a system of producer training and support that is unique in the industry. And, of course, all of this is supported by a strong personal connection with our mutual heritage, ethics, values and culture.

Taking control Asset-based long-term care provides flexibility and security Linda and Jim Saylor (left) meet with Charles C. Shafe, Ed.D., CEP, CSA, President, The Shafe Group

As individuals and families assess the risks that can affect their financial futures, the need to protect their assets from potential long-term care expenses often looms large among their concerns. The State Life Insurance Company, a OneAmerica company, addresses those concerns with assetbased long-term care solutions that put assets to work for long-term security. The recession created life and financial planning challenges for recently retired Jim and Linda Saylor of Orlando, Florida, and reminded them that there are some things they can t control. The market turmoil caused the nest egg they had put together to seem less secure and changed their focus from maximizing growth to solidifying what they had. Insurance Broker Charles Shafe showed the Saylors how the value of State Life s asset-based long-term care products could address their concerns. These solutions are based on the solid foundations of life insurance and fixed annuities products that provide guarantees and the peace of mind the Saylors desired. The Saylors were attracted to Charles explanation of State Life s Asset-Care product. The product is designed to secure a solution with a life insurance policy that provides death benefits, builds cash value over time and provides long-term care benefits. The entire death benefit can be utilized, if needed, to pay for long-term care expenses. In addition, there are potential tax benefits associated with each of these elements of the policy. Charles has been fortunate to develop a strong professional relationship with his State Life Regional Vice President, Elaine Marvin. Charles and other brokers have come to depend on Elaine and her colleagues to develop both the products and support that they can rely upon to provide long-term care solutions for their clients. Charles Shafe and the Saylors looked to State Life to satisfy their long-term care concerns with innovative products and secure solutions backed by our financial strength. Charles C. Shafe, Ed.D., CEP, CSA, President The Shafe Group Elaine Marvin Regional Vice President The State Life Insurance Company, a OneAmerica Company The State Life Insurance Company State Life is a leader in the development and sale of asset-based long-term care products and has been since the very beginning of our industry s innovation of this suite of products. State Life has developed a marketleading distribution team that is meeting the future care needs of consumers. The Pension Protection Act passed by the United States Congress provides incentives for all Americans to plan for their financial well-being and has spurred demand for asset-based long-term care solutions.

Creating solutions innovation and flexibility create tailored retirement plans Roger Crawford (right), Director of Human Resources, WELS, meets with Verlyn and Kelly Hahn, Hahn Financial Group, Inc.

Nonprofit organizations constantly are challenged to balance their traditional business needs with their unique missions and operational requirements. American United Life Insurance Company, a OneAmerica Company, has made understanding and meeting the retirement needs of nonprofit organizations a specialty. As Roger Crawford, Human Resources Director of Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, reviewed the final regulations governing 403(b) plans which were revised by Congress and effective in 2009, he was hearing a recurring theme from the organizations he supports: Our little world is being turned upside-down. Known as WELS, the Milwaukee-based synod is a denomination of more than 1,200 churches and educational institutions stretching across the United States. Traditionally, each of those organizations has been autonomous in many areas, including employee benefits. This arrangement allowed larger operations to adopt retirement plans suitable for them while smaller ones (some with only one eligible employee) could choose plans best for them. Unfortunately, under the new regulations, this diversity sparked compliance challenges. A change was required, but when Roger first sought help from 403(b) providers, he found few suitable solutions. Meanwhile, Verlyn and Kelly Hahn, principals of Hahn Financial Group in Sioux Falls, S.D., were viewing the problem from the perspective of a WELS church where they are members. We thought there should be some way to combine the high schools, churches, etc., and get a better price, Verlyn said. Soon, he was talking with Roger about a solution to address their needs. Unfortunately, no off-the-shelf plan would provide what WELS needed. That s when Verlyn and Kelly talked to Wayne Baca, Regional Sales Director, and Kevin Kidwell, Vice President of National Nonprofit Sales for American United Life Retirement Services. They provided the insight, expertise and design necessary to give WELS a state-of-the-art plan that was, and will be, flexible enough to deal with WELS future needs. Verlyn and Kelly had found an organization able to tailor a plan to meet their needs. It was no small task. The plan offers complexities most insurers couldn t tackle, Roger said, and the implementation offered its own challenges. American United Life Retirement Services cleared every hurdle with flexibility, reliability and a desire to make it work. Also important to WELS, Kelly said, was OneAmerica s financial strength and its unmatched experience in administering 403(b) plans. All of these things fit well with our synodical view, she said. The result is an $18 million program that not only gives WELS a solution, but one that also allows even the smallest church in the synod to participate, Verlyn said. Delivering solutions for organizations like the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod has established American United Life s Retirement Services Division as a specialist in meeting the needs of nonprofit organizations. Wayne Baca Regional Sales Director AUL Retirement Services American United Life Insurance Company, a OneAmerica Company American United Life s Retirement Solutions kevin Kidwell Vice President, National Nonprofit Sales AUL Retirement Services American United Life Insurance Company, a OneAmerica Company As a part of OneAmerica s family of companies, American United Life is a well-established leader in the 401(k) marketplace and ranks in the top seven companies in the not-for-profit 403(b) and 457 markets. AUL Retirement Services is dedicated to service and product offerings that respond to the needs of retirement plan sponsors and trusted financial professionals.

Trusted relationships Employee Benefits products deliver stability for business owners Vicki Randall (left), Manager of Benefits, Ice Miller LLP, and Chris Sears (center), Partner, Ice Miller LLP, meet with Terry Quinn, Vice President, Aon Risk Services

Employers seeking the best employees need a robust benefits package from a solid insurer that backs up that package when claims are made. The quality products and commitment to service delivered by American United Life Insurance Company, a OneAmerica company, help employers compete for and keep the best people. Our financial strength assures those employers that the firm will be ready and able to respond when needs arise. Aon Risk Services Broker Terry Quinn had not been born when American United Life started providing employee benefits services to Indianapolis law firm Ice Miller LLP. But that s OK, because his link to Ice Miller predates him as well: Terry s grandfather knew firm partner Harry Ice. That friendship led to Terry s father taking the lead on the Ice Miller account for American United Life. In 1984, Terry took over the account when his father retired. But even family connections like those can t fully explain the long relationship between American United Life and Ice Miller. Brokers like Terry have come to rely on the value of American United Life s flexible package of employee benefits coverage and on its commitment to service. According to Ice Miller, that s exactly what American United Life has delivered. It really comes down to the value, says Ice Miller Manager of Benefits Vicki Randall. At American United Life, they re flexible and accommodating, they do a lot of the legwork to finesse and compare contracts, they let us know the risks of a decision and they follow through on the benefits they promise to deliver. Brian Case, Field Vice President, Employee Benefits Sales has worked extensively with Terry to tailor the Ice Miller benefits coverage over the years. American United Life s Employee Benefits operation has coordinated product development, underwriting, customer service and claims operations with policyholders needs in mind while providing effective service. The benefits package offered to Ice Miller professionals has evolved over many years and is quite complex, says Brian, but when a claim is made, it s never a problem. Vicki was particularly impressed by the way American United Life handled a recent claim, taking worry off the shoulders of the claimant by going beyond the services typically expected. Creating a relationship that is responsive to the changing needs of the firm while delivering exceptional service requires a unique commitment to the customer. American United Life Employee Benefits relationship with Ice Miller proves one of the company s long-held beliefs: That long-term relationships deliver long-term value. Terry Quinn Vice President Aon Risk Services Employee Benefits Brian Case Field Vice President, Employee Benefits Sales American United Life Insurance Company, a OneAmerica Company American United Life offers both traditional and voluntary employee benefits products, including life, disability and ancillary coverages. In addition, the company offers self-funded medical plans underwritten by its R.E. Moulton affiliate. We are recognized for our exceptional expertise and capabilities in the voluntary benefits and self-funded markets. We are expanding our distribution footprint to make our suite of products available to more businesses across the country.
