2 President s Message We ve had a 116-year partnership with our customers. Never was it more evident than in Church Mutual teamed up with approximately 98,000 partners, and the result was the lowest claims total in 18 years! It seemed to defy logic when the final tally was counted and our 30,574 claims paid were the lowest since the 29,233 of Mother Nature was kinder and gentler this past year than in 2011, and property claims showed the best improvement with a 30% decrease. But the claims volume was down for every line of coverage not just property. Liability, workers compensation and commercial automobile claims also were down. When you consider the efforts being made by both partners, a reduction in all lines not just property makes sense. We do our part by being accountable in providing you with hands-on risk management information, including newsletters, videos, booklets, checklists and stronger loss control support across the country. You do your part by being equally accountable in putting that information into practice. It s a win-win situation for all. Reduced claims helped enable Church Mutual to have a profitable year on the heels of a 2011 that saw our company lose $37.5 million of policyholders surplus. The turnaround helped grow our surplus by $39 million to $415.2 million, essentially negating the poor results of Surplus most accurately reflects the financial strength of the company and its

3 ability to be there for you through thick and thin. Church Mutual s financial position has never been stronger. Our assests increased 4.5% to $1.23 billion. Premium volume increased 1.5% to $591.9 million. We were again awarded the A (Excellent) rating from A.M. Best Company. For the fourth consecutive year, our National Customer Service Center earned the prestigious Center of Excellence certification by BenchmarkPortal and The Center for Customer-Driven Quality founded at Purdue University. Our service representatives average speed of answer of 11.8 seconds is more than twice as fast as the property and casualty insurance industry average (24.49 seconds). Resolution of problems on the first call is 94.7%. One of only 66 service centers across the nation to earn the designation, it differentiates us from our competitors in customer service quality. It would be easy to get lost in all the excitement of 2012 s numbers. It would also be a big mistake. Insurance companies look at the bigger picture. Despite the outlier year we had in 2012, over the last five years, we have averaged 37,000 claims. We d like to believe 2013 will show a repeat of the favorable experience, but weather-related catastrophes vary greatly from year to year, making this a very volatile and unpredictable business. We are in the business of expecting the unexpected, and we ll be there for our partners the houses of worship, schools, camps and conference centers, denomination and association offices and senior living communities we insure with whatever Mother Nature and other calamities throw our way.
