1 The project will be an analysis of a cold storage fire and explosion fueled mainly by cheese, butter, and coolant which caused 1 fire fighter fatality and injured a number of others. An executive summary of the incident report is included here and the full report is available on blackboard. The project will be done in groups of three students. These groups are assigned by the instructor. The groups will create a group name and logo. During the project each group member will complete four tasks, one task A, one task B, one task C, and task D. Group work is encouraged for tasks A-C, but it is the individual group member s responsibility to make sure their work is done correctly because that group member s grade is based on their tasks (this way if one group member fails to do their work the other group member s grades are not affected). Task D is done individually. Combining the work of all the group member will create the ten section completed report due at the end of the semester. Each student will turn in a complete report with nine completed tasks (tasks A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, B3, C1, C2, C3) and their individual analysis of the compiled data (task D). If a group only has 2 members the reports should include 7 tasks (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, and D).If a group member does not do a task or it is not given to the rest of the group students should write a note in part D (which requires the information from all of the A-C tasks) and the final report. Task D should be done independently, and not be the same for each person in the group. The final report should contain a cover page including a group name, date, name of student, and a list of which students are in charge of which tasks. The report must be typed with each task starting on a new page. Submissions must be typed and turned in on blackboard. Table 1: Project Due Dates submitted on blackboard by midnight Task Due date A Week 5 B Week 6 C Week 7 D Week 8 Final Report Week 8 Power point Week 8 Presentation file On the individual task due date, each group member should turn in the task they were in charge of. If tasks are late they will be treated as a late assignment as described in the syllabus. The overall grading rubric for the final project is shown. Each group will make a 10 slide power point presentation to be turned in covering what they did during the project. Task report submission requirements: The report sections should be completed in such a way as to describe what methods were used and what the input parameters were. From the report the calculations you did should be able to be reproduced by someone else by reading your report. This should include the equations, input parameters for hand calculations, screen shots of model input sheets if needed, and a description of reasoning behind choosing the parameters you used. All assumptions should be listed to help explain why decisions were made. Methodologies, equations, and material properties should be referenced in the APA format. Page 1 of 10

2 What to include in individual task report: You include this information for each subsection of the part of the project, for part A1 you would include the following information for part A1.I, A1.II, and A1.III for each subsection the following grading scheme will be applied. i. (5%) What you did ii. (20%) How you did it Including: numbered equation & a set of sample calculations Numbered figures Numbered tables iii. (20%) Assumptions you made (Including why these assumptions are reasonable) iv. (20%) What you found aka results v. (20%) Organization of Analysis of what you found aka what the results show. vi. (5%) References (Use APA format) vii. (10%) Organization and presentation I should be able to recreate you calculations from the write up portion of the report along without having to look at your calculations. These will be given to your group members so they need to understand what you did. Table 2: Grading Rubric for ABET Course Objective Measure Grade The student will demonstrate understanding of various materials and their relationship as fuel in fires. Task A /20 The student will demonstrate knowledge of characteristics of Task B /20 water and other agents used to suppress fire. The student will correctly describe applications to principles associated with fire dynamics. Feedback: Task C /20 Task D /20 Final Report completeness. /10 Final Presentation... /10 Final grade... /100 Page 2 of 10

Task A2: 1) Estimate the energy contained in the warehouse based on the report assuming all fuel is butter. 2) What is the equivalent amount of wood as a fuel? 3) What is the equivalent amount of kerosene as a fuel? 4) How long would it take to burn as a pool fire of kerosene with a 10m diameter? Task A3: 1) Estimate the energy contained in the warehouse based on the report assuming all fuel is margarine. 2) What is the equivalent amount of wood as a fuel? 3) What is the equivalent amount of kerosene as a fuel? 4) How long would it take to burn as a pool fire of kerosene with a 10m diameter? 7 Task B1: 1) How many gallons of water will it take to extinguish the fire based on the calculations in part A1. 2) What are the benefits of using foam with the water 3) What is the toxicity of foam when released into the environment? 4) Based on what we ve discussed in class, would dry ice be a good method for extinguishing this fire? 5) Can you recommend any other extinguishment methods? Task B2: 1) How many gallons of water will it take to extinguish the fire based on the calculations in part A2. 2) What are the benefits of using foam with the water 3) What is the toxicity of foam when released into the environment? 4) Based on what we ve discussed in class, would dry ice be a good method for extinguishing this fire? 5) Can you recommend any other extinguishment methods? 8 Task C1: 1) Estimate the heat release rate of a 5m diameter fire of the three different hydrocarbon fuels from part A (kerosene, JP-4, heavy fuel oil). 2) Estimate the flame height assuming a pool fire of 5m. 3) How do the flame height estimate compare with measurements of flame height off of pictures of the incident. 4) Calculate the radiation to the surrounding at the following distances assuming a point source radiation model: 100 ft, 200 ft, 300 ft 5) How long would it take to reach the heat release rate assuming a slow, medium, and fast t 2 growth rate fire using the equation on the equation sheet? 6) Based on the growth rate calculations, and the reports on the fire, which growth rate matches the behavior of the actual fuel? Task C2: 1) Estimate the heat release of a 10m diameter fire of the three different hydrocarbon fuels from part A (kerosene, JP-4, heavy fuel oil). 2) Estimate the flame height assuming a pool fire of 10m. Task C3: 1) Estimate the heat release rate of a 15m diameter fire of the three different hydrocarbon fuels from part A (kerosene, JP-4, heavy fuel oil). 2) Estimate the flame height assuming a pool fire of 15m. 9 Task D To be done independently by each group member. Analysis of all results from tasks A-C 1) How do the three fuels (cheese, butter, and margarine) compare to wood and gasoline as a fuel. 2) What extinguishment method would you recommend? 3) Based on the combination of results from parts A-C which fuel (cheese, butter, or margarine) is most hazardous? a. What are you basing your results on? 4) Which recommendations from the New Zealand Fire Service do you consider to be the most important? Page 9 of 10
