2 C I P G E N E R A T I O N C O N F E R E N C E - C A L L F O R P R O P O S A L S The 2019 CIP Conference will mark a significant historical milestone: the 100th anniversary of the Institute. Pride, admiration, anticipation, optimism: these are some of the emotions that we members of the CIP extended community share and radiate as preparation begins for the celebration of this momentous event. P r o p o s a l D e a d l i n e : N o v e m b e r 1 9 Our conference theme, GENERATION, captures the dynamic character of the planning profession and the significant contribution it has made and can continue to make locally, nationally, and globally, as it advances into a second century. c i p - i c u. c a / g e n e r a t i o n
3 Through the theme GENERATION, we acknowledge and recognize: An evolving planning context, strongly associated with the passage of time past, present, and future as well as time-related notions such as life stages, transition, succession, and vision. Alignment with the multigenerational /cyclical worldview of Canada s Indigenous communities, and cultures. A multifaceted planning practice, undertaking meaningful change and creating legacies (positive and negative) in all reaches of the country. Wide-ranging planning outcomes, rooted in best practices and the application of such principles as openness, transparency, inclusiveness, reconciliation, and accountability. The planning professional s overarching aim to foster sustainable, healthy, and resilient communities for current and future generations. The conference theme will also enable the expression of diverse generational voices and will strive to provide some answers to the following questions, among others: How do we reconcile the voices of different generations? How do we plan for future generations? How do we respond to the needs of different generations? 2
4 C O N F E R E N C E V E N U E : W E S T I N H O T E L O T T A W A, O N T A R I O Ottawa is more than the nation s capital and seat of the Federal Government. It is a city where urban, rural, and natural environments collide to create a place where residents and visitors can have a unique experience. Located on unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinabe Nation, this city is a product of the contributions of generations of people who have left an indelible mark on its present. Between its historical landmarks, bustling markets, dynamic main streets, and lush green space, you will find in Ottawa a city so familiar and yet captivating, with something to discover at every turn. Ottawa is a 21st-Century city that inspires forward thinking while keeping you connected to an unforgettable past. Moreover, as the home of the inaugural meeting of the Town Planning Institute of Canada CIP s origins we can think of no better location to share our centenary conference with you. 3
