Hi Reps! Use this Powerpoint to lead site meetings. Feel free to share feedback on how useful this is with CAT team.
Schools Oakland Families Deserve! No Cuts to Kids! November OEA Site Meetings
We are Organizing! #WeAreOEA!!!
A Tale of Two Visions for Oakland Public Schools: Budget Cuts vs Our Contract OUSD wants... Currently OUSD is considering cuts of $ million. - Layoffs and furloughs, - Unpaid work - School closures (especially of smaller school sites) A Slide from OUSD s Budget Committee (10/30/17)
A Tale of Two Visions for Oakland Public Schools: Budget Cuts vs Our Contract OEA wants... - Increased compensation and teacher retention - Smaller class sizes and caseloads - More counselors, nurses, RJ, etc. - More preparation time SCHOOLS OAKLAND FAMILIES DESERVE!

WHAT CAUSED THIS MESS? a) Central Office Overspending Former Supt. hired 75 non-budgeted positions b) Business Office Mismanagement Consistently miscalculates revenue and expenses c) School Board Asleep At The Wheel Failed to oversee former Superintendent or Business Office d) California systematically underfunds education CA spends 7x more per prisoner than per student. STUDENTS SHOULD NOT PAY FOR A BUDGET MESS THEY DID NOT CREATE
GROWING OVERHEAD: ADMINISTRATOR SALARIES AS PERCENT OF BUDGET Source: OUSD Unaudited Actuals
OUSD SPENDING OUT OF LINE WITH ALAMEDA COUNTY 0 0 0, 3 4 6, 2 2 $ d with e conform D S U O f i l savings a i t n sts for e o t c o d P r a d ide stan countyw ion. rat administ Alameda County Average OUSD
So are OEA s bargaining demands realistic?... OF COURSE! We ve seen these numbers before but we always need to remember: ADDING IT UP: both in the county * Services/Operating expenditures include a wide variety of contracts of which we need more transparency and details from OUSD. More details here. OUSD Unaudited Actuals
No Cuts To Kids or Essential Services! Full funding for: - Kids, schools, or student programs. - Any essential district workers (e.g., custodians, office staff, food service, instructional aides). They also provide vital support for our students. Solidarity with our co-workers! Only Cuts To Excessive Spending on Admin, Contracts, Consultants. OUSD must find the money to protect and improve conditions. We refuse to go backwards again and demand better learning conditions now.
And. More Funds from the State - California is the 6th largest economy in the world - Yet it ranks 46th out of the 50 states in funding per pupil. - And spends 7 times ($75,560) more each year per prisoner than it does per student ($10,291). - We are organizing with teacher unions in Los Angeles, San Diego, and others to fight to change this
Our Students Deserve Better! Fight Back! Hour of Power Gather 4-5p at 6 different locations: - 7th and Market 51st and Telegraph Splash Pad Park 35th and MacArthur 98th and International 66th and International Mobilize to the Board - 5:30-6:30 to School Board! After if you are still energized, join us at the School Board.
What other ideas do you have? What do you think we should do to fight? Some ideas have been: - Cluster by cluster actions - Educational events sharing info on budget and developing People s Budgets - Organize our sites on social media and petitions Just like we took action in Work To Rule 2 years ago When we organize we get heard!
even though the district admits it has a $1.2-billion reserve. The teachers union believes the reserve is significantly larger.
