1 Volume 1, Issue 9 The Pulse of Legacy Message from our Director I trust you had a relaxed week sharing with family and friends. I know that we have many wonderful things for which to be thankful. I am grateful for the dedicated and kind people that our children have here at Legacy; your love and support for each one of our scholars continues to make a positive impact in each one of them believing, achieving, and succeeding. The hard work you are doing day after day cannot be wasted. Let's continue to encourage our students to be present and on time on a daily basis. It really makes a huge difference when our students are present learning. As we approach the next round of assessments, including MAP for middle school, EOC STAAR Re-takes, and semester assessments, let s continue to make this learning relevant and incorporate engagement strategies to motivate students. Please continue to send homework and study guides for students to practice and use. After analyzing the common assessment data, remember that if a student failed specific SEs, during the first and second common assessment administration, then you need to: -Carry over these same SEs onto your semester action plans. -Re-test after re-teaching these SEs and collaborate with your team to analyze where students are erring -Anticipate misconceptions and incorporate strategies to address them during our planning sessions. -Break down difficult concepts into manageable chunks & scaffold the learning. Let s maximize every instructional minute available to us; bell-to-bell instruction is the key. If our scholars are focused and we engage them from the moment they enter our classrooms to the moment they leave, they will have a great chance to succeed in their learning. Have conferences with parents and guardians about behavior, academics, absentees and tardiness. We need to make sure that we create partnerships with all stakeholders and that we hold everybody accountable. Let's make it happen! Javier Chaparro

3 G E T T O K N O W O U R S T A F F CHRISTIAN GUARDADO H U M A N I T E S My name is Christian Guardado. I'm a very recent first-generation graduate from The University of Texas at Arlington. I majored in Communication in the field of Broadcasting and earned two minors in Political Science and Public Relations. Taking a different route into Education was definitely a challenge I'm learning from day after day. I seek new opportunities wherever possible and love staying busy! I've never lived anywhere else other than the city of Arlington, and watching it grow into the entertainment city it is now has for sure been quite an experience. I love chocolate, photography, videography, and making great memories with family & friends. I dislike ketchup and apples!! I've never had a pet before but for my future one I'd like it to be a bulldog! STUDENT OF THE WEEK Legacy Student of the Week is John Hernandez, who admires Helen Keller due to her determination to keep moving forward, while dealing with disabilities. Due to this determination, John is inspired to strive forward in life and never give up, no matter how difficult the task. Aside from that, before moving to Legacy, John was previously in Choir and loved to sing. Coming to Legacy was a good move for John, stating that newly developed friendships was exactly what he needed, the fun experiences adds enjoyment to each day, helping him endure at all times.

6 Weekly Tips by Gabrielle Wallace Steps to Supportive and Responsive Discipline Noticing that a student is trying or is making some headway is important this growth deserves to be celebrated. If a student has trouble focusing for the duration of class, going from five minutes of focused work in September to 10 minutes in October is progress that should be recognized even as we encourage the student to make it to 15 minutes in November. Signal nonverbal support, recognition, or redirection: If you ve built a problem-solving relationship with students, you may be able to use proximity or prearranged signals to help a student get back on track or to encourage them, all without saying a word. Check in and offer gestures of support: Young people in our care often complain about not being seen or heard by adults, especially in middle and high school, which can be lonely, impersonal places. Notice if a student seems troubled. Check in with them: Are you OK? or You look upset do you need a few minutes to collect yourself in the hallway? This sends a message that you care, that you see the student and are interested in their wellbeing. Have a restorative chat: A one-on-one chat in which you actively listen can help you better understand a student who s struggling with behavior. Active listening has the additional benefit of helping people calm down, which can encourage them to be more introspective and open to problem-solving. Resource: A Proactive Approach to Discipline: Restorative discipline seeks to create an environment in which problem behavior is less likely to occur. By Marieke van Woerkom
