2 Capital A is ten years old. From working at my kitchen table during the Great Recession, to becoming an established Architecture practice, I want to thank everyone who helped make this possible and celebrate the projects designed along the way. In the past decade Capital A have taken on over 200 projects with a construction value of more than seven million pounds. Building is a team effort, none of these designs were possible without clients, consultants and contractors. I have been fortunate to work with some great trades and professionals while collaborating with some brilliant homeowners. 3 N e w B u i l d H o u s e, I n v e r k e i t h i n g The client for this project was a property developer who owned the house next door. They commissioned Capital A to explore options for a oneoff house in the garden.

4 E x t e n s i o n t o M o d e r n F l a t, E d i n b u r g h This project was built in collaboration with a firm called Glassbuild, it was one of several projects where small glass extensions were added to properties around Edinburgh. This one was added to a modern block of flats in Craigleith, Edinburgh.

5 G r a n n y F l a t, R a v e l s t o n, E d i n b u r g h This was a detached double garage next to a villa. The owner wanted to sell the villa during the recession and asked Capital A to obtain planning permission for a granny flat, to add interest and increase the chance of a sale. The copper clad design had panoramic views over the playing fields at Mary Erskine School. The property was sold with the benefit of planning consent to the new owners.

6 C o n v e r s i o n o f T o w n h o u s e t o F l a t s, A l l o a This project for a property developer was the first time Capital A altered an historic, listed building. This type of project has become a major part of the work Capital A do; Making significant alterations to older buildings, while respecting their architectural heritage, giving them a new lease of life. Old buildings will decay beyond repair unless they are lived in and sometimes that means changing their original use.

7 E x t e n s i o n t o C o t t a g e, L o c h T a y The client for this project lived in Edinburgh but kept a holiday cottage near Loch Tay. The property was old and small, this extension was to double the size of the building and give it a modern feel. The roof design used copper, matched with cedar cladding. The gable had a large viewing deck on the upper level, overlooking Loch Tay.

8 S t a i r s / S t o r a g e f o r a H o u s e, F i f e This stairs was designed to fit in the atrium of a new build house in Kingsbarns, Fife. The stairs would have been made of sheet steel and plywood. The storage shelves were intended to be structural. The clients were retired and had a lifetimes collection of mementos they wanted to display. The client sold the site before the house, and its stairs, could be built.

9 N e w B u i l d H o u s e, C o. C l a r e, I r e l a n d A feasibility study for a family member in Ireland. The site, in a remote rural area, was perfect for a large luxury family home. The design had all the features for a well designed home; A clear distinction between private and public spaces, an obvious entrance and sheltered outdoor space. Historically most rural homes in Ireland were cottages, but large one off houses were also a feature of the landscape. This was a contemporary take on the vernacular grand country house.

10 G a r d e n C h a i r P r o t o t y p e This project was designed in collaboration with Kibble Landscaping, based in the Scottish Borders. The chairs were for use outdoors, as garden furniture. Thick cuts of Douglas Fir were chosen to ensure a long lifespan. The chair was designed as part of a set, including tables and bench seating.

11 O p e n P l a n E x t e n s i o n, S o u t h Q u e e n s f e r r y The owners of this house wanted a larger, open plan kitchen / living / dining space with as much natural light as possible. The extension is south facing, onto the rear garden. To provide shade for all that glass, and shelter for the patio, the roof was extended past the building line by 1.3m This was the first design Capital A built with an intermediate zone, not fully inside or outside. Somewhere to sit when the weather is less than perfect. This feature has been requested by numerous clients ever since. You can get more details about this project on the Capital A website.

12 G a r d e n R o o m, B a r n t o n, E d i n b u r g h This project was small but very special. The client was a retired lady who wanted space to view her newly landscaped garden. The budget was tight but the design worked with this constraint, rather than against it. By using a steel frame and glass walls, costs were kept down and the view uninterrupted. The design is uncompromising, modern and affordable. Exactly what the client wanted. This was our first project to be published. You can get more details about this project on the Capital A website.

13 B a t h r o o m, E d i n b u r g h N e w T o w n 2013 This bathroom was part of a larger refurbishment to an historic, category A listed flat in Edinburgh New Town. The bathroom was placed on the street side of the property, an unusual and technically challenging move. As well as the layout, tiling and lighting, Capital A designed and procured the wall mounted wash basin unit. For the prudish, there is an automatic blind to preserve privacy in the bath, or you could just overlook the street while bathing. 14 H o u s e E x t e n s i o n, L o n g n i d d r y, E a s t L o t h i a n This extension to a Victorian villa created a new kitchen / dining space overlooking a private rear garden. The large area of glass faces north, with spectacular views over Longniddry golf course and the Forth beyond. You can get more details about this project on the Capital A website.

15 H o u s e E x t e n s i o n, C o r s t o r p h i n e, E d i n b u r g h This contemporary extension was designed to create an open plan kitchen / living / dining space for a 1930 s house in suburban Edinburgh. The client was inspired by an earlier Capital A design and wanted something similar. The large, north facing glazing floods the living area with natural light and the L-shaped living area is the perfect hub for family life. 16 H o u s e E x t e n s i o n, J u n i p e r G r e e n, E d i n b u r g h The owner of this detached suburban house wanted an extension which enlarged their kitchen and created a new entrance to the house. The cantilevered roof at the rear creates a sheltered deck which incorporates an existing bay window into the extension geometry. The roof spans over the new front entrance, working with the existing 1930 s roof detail. You can get more details about this project on the Capital A website.

17 I n t e r n a l A l t e r a t i o n, E d i n b u r g h N e w T o w n The owners of this A listed flat had seen a previous Capital A project across the street. The layout of the flat was radically altered, creating a bright, modern living area with ready access to a new kitchen. You can get more details about this project on the Capital A website.

18 H o u s e E x t e n s i o n, B a r n t o n, E d i n b u r g h This project is immediately next door to an earlier Capital A design. The neighbour recommended Capital A to the owners of this house, who needed more space for their growing family. The extension incorporated part of the existing house, making the space seem larger. The extension formed a new entrance to the house, creating a clear distinction between public and private spaces. You can get more details about this project on the Capital A website.

19 H o u s e E x t e n s i o n, B r a i d H i l l s, E d i n b u r g h This was a major alteration to a suburban bungalow, the finished project almost doubled the size of the property. The new extension formed a dramatic new entrance and split level kitchen / living / dining space. The existing house was given over to bedrooms, creating a clear split between public and private space. 20 A l t e r a t i o n + E x t e n s i o n, E d i n b u r g h N e w T o w n This project involved a change of use, alteration and extension to an historic listed property in a conservation area and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The alteration created a large, luxury flat over two stories with a modern living area overlooking a private rear garden. The zinc clad extension floods the space with natural light. The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland chose this project as one of the 100 best homes in Scotland since the year You can get more details about this project on the Capital A website.

21 U r b a n R e a l m M a g a z i n e, T o p A r c h i t e c t s i n S c o t l a n d In publication since 1922, Urban Realm is the leading magazine for the architectural, design and specifying industries in Scotland. Capital A was included in their prestigious Top 100 Architects for the first time in 2017.

22 C o n s e r v a t o r y, S t o c k b r i d g e, E d i n b u r g h This property is four stories above the Water of Leith in Edinburgh. The existing, wooden conservatory was decaying and hard to maintain, so the owners commissioned Capital A to design a larger, modern replacement. These type of complex projects on challenging sites are what Capital A specialise in. Planning permission was granted in 2017 and the project is ongoing.

23 E x t e n s i o n, Q u e e n s f e r r y R o a d, E d i n b u r g h This project was small but ambitious. Set in an overlooked rear garden just off one of the busiest roads in Edinburgh. The owner wanted a space that had lots of light but also privacy. The overhanging roof and well considered layout achieved those aims. 24 H o u s e E x t e n s i o n, T r i n i t y, E d i n b u r g h This end-terrace 1930 s home was too small for the new owners family. A former client recommend Capital A and this extension is the end result. The house now has a kitchen / dining space flooded with light. The sheltered deck at the rear is great for barbecues on summer evenings. 25 H o u s e E x t e n s i o n, C r a i g l o c k h a r t, E d i n b u r g h This is a feasibility study for a large extension wrapping around a 1940 s house in Edinburgh. The design adds three bedrooms to the house, as well as a large L- shaped, open plan kitchen / living / Dining space. Alterations to suburban houses such as this have become a mainstay of our work over the past decade.

26 G a r d e n R o o m, C u r r i e, E d i n b u r g h The owner of this house was impressed by a previous garden room designed by Capital A and wanted one for himself. The client wanted to self-build the extension and we provided all necessary support to allow them to achieve this. The design is simple but striking and a great place to relax after a long day. Capital A have been included in the Urban Realm Top 100 list for the second time.
