1 Policy, Planning and Assessment Council (PPAC) PPAC Policy (PDF) TO: Kapi olani Community College Students, Staff, Faculty and Community Partners FROM: Leon Richards - Interim Chancellor SUBJECT: Using Evidence to Improve the Effectiveness of the Policy, Planning and Assessment Council (PPAC) DATE: October 12, 2006 In March 2006, I requested that the Office of Planning and Institutional Research (OPIR) work with knowledgeable faculty and administrators to develop an instrument that would survey the PPAC membership and create a data baseline the College could use to plan, assess, and improve the effectiveness of the PPAC. On some survey items the data were positive. For example, the 19 PPAC members who completed the survey were favorable in their assessment of meeting notices and PPAC representation and membership. However, other items clearly need improvement. Survey completers indicated that the meetings were too long, that program review reports and tactical plans were not effectively evaluated at the meetings, and that documentation, including minutes, was not adequately disseminated to the campus community. As the Interim Chancellor, I am committed to improving the effectiveness of the PPAC, improving campus understanding of the PPAC s roles and responsibilities, and to using the PPAC as a vehicle for enhancing the quality and timeliness of communication. As you can see, we are beginning to address some of the identified weaknesses by providing minutes, future schedules, program review assessment presentations and handouts, and related documents on this PPAC web site: Please be assured that I welcome any positive suggestions regarding how the PPAC can continue to improve its effectiveness as a governance body. And, I particularly welcome suggestions for how the College s website can play a greater role in improved communication campus-wide. Thank you for your ongoing support and tireless work to improve the learning experience for all of our students and the governance processes of the College.
