4 What is an endowment?

5 For a university, an endowment is the accumulation of assets established by donors to support the school s mission and vision.

6 For an individual, it s the best vehicle for creating a legacy in perpetuity.

7 How does an endowment work?

8 Endowments provide long-term funding to fuel people, programs and progress. At TCU, endowment assets come from two primary sources: Gifts from donors Additions to long-term savings that are set aside each year by the Board of Trustees

9 Just the facts TCU s Endowment: $1.5 Billion 66th largest university endowment (among both public and private U.S. universities) 77 th largest in terms of endowment per student Annual payout is approximately $65 million 5% of three-year rolling average of endowment market value Currently 11% of our operating budget

10 Growing the Endowment In 1942, Notre Dame celebrated its 100-year anniversary. The school s endowment was valued at $1 million less than ½ the endowment value of nearly 150 universities at the time. Today, Notre Dame s endowment is worth more than $10.4 billion. Each of the school s advancement campaigns has successfully doubled the endowment s value. How did they achieve that?

12 For the past decade, TCU has focused on physically transforming our campus. Now, as part of Vision in Action: Lead On, strengthening the endowment is an institutional priority. Direct correlation between value of endowment and a University s reputation Endowment fuels people, programs and progress through transformative scholarships and professorships

13 Endowment-supported scholarships help us recruit the best and brightest students, representing true diversity of thought, background and experience. Endowment-supported academic programs are the key to accelerating improvements in teaching, research and creative activity. They expand opportunities for collaborative research and entrepreneurial initiatives and implement innovative programs beneficial to our students and society. Endowment-supported faculty can help solidify TCU s presence on the national academic stage.

15 Endowed Scholarships: Nearly 870 endowed scholarships awarded in 2016

17 Endowed Faculty & Programs: Supports 10 percent of full-time faculty Gifts to create endowed chairs are permanently invested; only a small portion of that income is spent annually to support salary, research and educational requirements.

19 TCU s Endowment Mix: Much like a solid retirement plan, TCU s endowment strategy represents diverse revenue sources that provide independence, stability and a margin of excellence.

20 Where do we want to be? How are we going to get there?

21 The University s budget has grown more rapidly than the endowment. We want to: Increase the endowment per student ratio and payout relative to our annual budget What is best endowment per student ratio? What is best payout relative to budget? Create an endowment large enough to underwrite student aid and avoid dependency on tuition increases Increase our financial strength and competitive advantage

22 Donor Engagement and Support We will: Capitalize on our ability to ride out difficult economic times Decrease payouts Robust allocations model Increase returns Robust allocations model Receive gifts Robust prospect management model
