1 IN THIS ISSUE President s Message Holiday Fraud Celebrating Credit Unions Skip-A-Pay 80 Days of Gratitude
2 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Gratitude can transform common days into Thanksgiving, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings. - William Arthur Ward As our 80th year comes to a close I couldn t be more proud of the accomplishments that Minnequa Works has made over the years. To celebrate this amazing milestone and to thank our membership, we kicked off the year at our annual meeting by announcing we would be giving over $500,000 in Loyalty Dividends back to our membership, and we did! Then we launched the 749 Reasons to Switch to e-statements campaign and we ve already awarded the first $749 prize to James (see our community board for picture). James won just by making the switch to e- Statements! We are running this promotion for four consecutive quarters with the other $749 drawings set to be held on October 6, January 5 & April 6. (You could be one of our winners!* Entering is easy; you can even sign up for e-statements from our website and be automatically entered in the sweepstakes.) We then wanted to thank our community. The people in our community are our family members, our friends, our neighbors, our coworkers, our peers. We know that many in our community struggle with hardships, so we wanted to really hone in on the needs and wants of those struggling and do something special this year. This led us to develop the 80 Days of Gratitude Project. We selected eight local non-profit organizations covering a wide array of causes. Each non-profit organization told us what they were in need of most and in turn we donated those in demand items. We hope that these donations will help ease some of the burden for those in times of hardship. Thank you for helping us make this year special and for helping us make Minnequa Works what it is today! From the Staff and Board of Minnequa Works Credit Union, Here's wishing you more happiness than all our words can tell, not just for the holidays but for all the year as well. Have a Happy & Safe Holiday Season! *Eligibility restrictions apply.
3 Don t let your holidays be a victim to fraud! During the holidays thieves are in full force preying on our holiday cheer and giving spirits. Here are a couple of tips to help keep your holidays fraud free. 1. PACKAGE THEFT: Online shopping makes things easier for consumers and for thieves. Consumers may want to take additional steps to ensure gifts or other items don t disappear before they are delivered. Get packages delivered to your office, a local pick-up area (like a UPS Store or an Amazon Locker), or schedule delivery times when you know you ll be home. Also, set up tracking notifications so you know exactly when an item will be delivered. 2. PACKAGE DELIVERY PROBLEMS: Throughout the year, especially during the holidays, we receive fake notifications about package delivery problems. DO NOT click on links in s about package delivery problems. Instead, return to the original order confirmation you received and find your package s tracking number. Then enter that tracking number into the website you made the purchase from. 3. COUNTERFEIT ITEMS/ONLINE SHOPPING SCAMS: While looking to score deals you may land on unfamiliar websites advertising special prices. Some unfamiliar websites may be scam centers. If you are purchasing items from an online retailer you ve never tried before, do your homework before putting in any personal and payment information. The Better Business Bureau is a great resource on businesses or you can even search the retailer s name and scam to see if it checks out. 4. FAKE CHARITIES: The holiday season is a time when charitable organizations often collect donations from consumers looking to spread some holiday cheer. But beware of phony charities that may call or send letters in hopes of cashing in on your holiday spirit. Before giving any money, research the charity. If you opt to contribute to an organization, go to its website to enter your payment information instead of giving it away over the phone or mailing it to someone. And remember, your financial institutions, and any other reputable business, will NEVER call or you asking for account numbers, PINs or other personal identifying information. The only people asking for this information are people trying to scam you out of your hard earned money. Be safe this holiday season and for more information on scams visit: Why Credit Unions Are Worth Celebrating In 1924, Roy Bergengren, one of the architects of the credit union movement, reflected on what a credit union can do for people. The credit union is, in fact, a bridge, he wrote in the inaugural issue of The Bridge, the official newsletter of the American credit union movement. It may be the bridge over which the tenant farmer travels the wide gap that separates him from ownership. It may be the way that opens the great land of opportunity to the wage worker, who finds his savings the open sesame to broader possibilities for himself and his family. Twenty-four years later, credit unions in America began celebrating the philosophy and achievements of credit unions every year on the third Thursday in October. The theme for International Credit Union Day 2017 Dreams Thrive Here, harkens back to Bergengren s sentiment, and it s meant to serve as a reminder of how effective credit unions like Minnequa Works are at helping all people chase and achieve their biggest dreams in life. This is because, unlike other financial institutions, credit unions are not-for-profit, so their primary purpose isn t to score record profits in order to cut distant shareholders bigger dividends checks. Rather, the primary purpose of credit unions is and always has been to be of service to their members. That means you. (Article courtesy of CUNA)

New Year s Eve has always been a time for looking back to the past, and more importantly, forward to the coming year. It s a time to reflect on the changes we want or need to make and resolve to follow through on those changes. It s easy to throw around New Year s resolutions but they end up being the same ones every year because you never took them seriously. This year, Here s an idea: Make a SMALL resolution. Whether it s putting 5% of your income into savings, paying off your debt by putting 15% of your income toward debt repayment, or opening a Christmas Club Account to save for next year s holiday season or starting an IRA with small automatic deposits. Pick something you KNOW you can manage. If at anytime you need help keeping your financial resolution, we re here to help. Call Ouida Gregory, Minnequa Works Certified Credit Union Financial Counselor, to learn more about budgeting and debt resolution.
