2 Our Local Impact Sets Us Apart On our Testimonial page at you ll notice recent notes from members about how Travis Credit Union has helped them. These include an April 11 comment from a member at our Merced branch that read: Everyone that helped me was really good. I ve been so glad to have transferred from the bank I was using. Another note, this one from a member at our Fairfield Branch, said: I come in often and everyone knows me by first name. I love that about TCU. Keep up the excellent work. Pat and I are proud of the local impact the credit union has had in our community, not just with our services and products, but with our commitment to financial education, literacy and advocacy. We believe that what we do to help our neighbors, friends and family members become better money managers, sets us apart from other financial institutions. These aren t just token ideals; they are part of the credit union s culture and social responsibility. Barry Nelson President & CEO For example, Travis Credit Union was recently certified by the U.S. Treasury s Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund to better meet the needs of low-income consumers. We re among only 808 organizations in the U.S. to receive this designation, which allows us to expand our programs in these areas. Another example can be found in this issue of Smart Money Matters. We re proud to announce the 2016 recipients of our $1,500 Mary Keith Duff Memorial Scholarship. To date, we have awarded more than $281,500 in scholarships since 2004 to college-bound members. Pat Moreno Board Chair Other efforts include our free financial seminars, our free tax preparation services program and our popular Mad City Money Teen Financial Bootcamp on managing money. Overall, we reached 10,564 people with our financial literacy efforts in These are just a few examples of the local impact the credit union has had over the past year. Pat and I are thankful for having a dedicated group of volunteers, managers and employees who make this all happen, year after year. We re equally grateful to our members for placing their financial trust in us, which allows us to do what we do. Have a safe and fun summer! 2 w w w. t r a v i s c u.org

6 business matters john shelby vp of business lending At Travis, We Mean Business Business Exit and Succession Planning Today s business owners are not only concerned with how to run their business in the current economic environment but how and when to position their business for sale in the coming years. As a result, the need for an exit and/or succession strategy necessary to successfully convert business assets into a retirement nest egg has increased among those baby-boomers at the helm of their business. Uncertainty in how capital gains will be treated going forward will also likely prompt a further rise in owners wanting to sell their business now to avoid potentially unfavorable tax implications at some point in the future. A change of ownership is on the horizon The Wall Street Journal has predicted a $10-trillion wealth transfer by 2020 through the sale of small businesses alone. Over the next five years, 29% of business with $100,000 to $10 million in revenues are expected to plan a change of ownership. At the larger end of that revenue spectrum, $7 million to $10 million, the number anticipating a change or ownership jumps to 33%. Maximizing the value of the business A recent Sun Trust Bank Study showed that 60% of owners surveyed had delayed their exit plans by at least two years given the Great Recession. And of those who delayed a sale, 42% felt maximizing their business s value in the most important part of their exit plan. According to a Wall Street Journal report on medium sized businesses, 90% were not prepared for sale due to the likelihood of a lower price and/or unacceptable financing terms. In many cases, preparing to sell a business involves working with outside consultants, such as bankers, CPAs, exit strategy experts and attorneys, to help position the business and execute the sale. In addition, the professional consultant typically takes the lead in locating a reliable buyer a critical factor in that the seller will most likely always carry a subordinate note. This process can take up to 2 to 3 years in order to generate maximum value for the seller. SBA financing can make the difference Small Business Administration (SBA) loans are often the best financing vehicle for buyers because the repayment term is 10 years versus 5 years. A longer term will minimize the strain on cash flow. In addition, the buyer can often qualify without complete outside real estate collateral since lenders may be willing to rely on the 75% guarantee from the SBA to offset the under-collateralized risk. Keep in mind that every transaction is different. At Travis, we mean business Travis Credit Union has been providing hands on guidance to businesses like yours for nearly 65 years through up markets and down. 13 SIX WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR PC Owning a personal computer today comes with challenges such as learning new programs and operating systems. But the greater challenge is protecting yourself from hackers and other types of cybercriminals who try to steal your personal information, infect your computer with a virus or even take over your computer entirely. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to help thwart these cybercrimes. Here are six tips from the U.S. government to protect your personal computer. 1. Create strong passwords The longer the password, the tougher it is to crack. Experts suggest using at least characters for most home users. Mix letters, numbers and special characters in an unpredictable way that only makes sense to you. Avoid using your name, birthdate or common words. Avoid using the same password for several accounts. 2. Back up your computer files Backing up the data on your computer to an external hard drive, a removable disc or some other storage device is a practical way to keep your data safe and backed up if your computer becomes inaccessible or compromised. 3. Check online reviews Research a company before doing business with it. Do an online search using the business name and add a word such a reviews, complaints or scams to determine its legitimacy, especially before you provide the company with your personal and financial information. 4. Guard your personal data Keep safe your Social Security number, credit union account numbers, credit card numbers and other personal and financial data. This data, if stolen, can all be used by identity theft thieves to steal your money or open new fraudulent accounts in your name. Treat your personal information like cash and be cautious about giving it out. 5. Shop at secure online sites If you re shopping or banking online, stick to websites that use encryption to protect your information as it gets transmitted. Look for the https at the beginning of the web address and on every page of the site. It is a sign that the page is encrypted. 6. Use Security Software Ensure your computers security software is automatically updated to protect it against the latest online threats. Out-ofdate anti-virus programs may not stop malware from infecting your computers. Remember to buy security software only from reputable businesses, and never from unexpected pop-up messages or s. talk about savings. say hello to the Sprint Credit Union Member Discount.
