2 Global Reach BIBF plays a vital role in the training and development of human capital in the Middle East and North Africa. Our commitment to excellence has strengthened our position as the leading educational provider across all major business disciplines. We serve As a partner to numerous world-class institutions; delivering thought leadership, assessment and training in the areas of Banking, Accounting & Finance, Assessment & Development, English & Business Communication, Human Resources, Information Technology, Insurance, Interpersonal Skills, Islamic Finance, Leadership & Management, Marketing, Sales & PR, and Project Management. 2
3 Target audience The workshop is designed for middle and senior level participants working in the insurance industry who want to get practical insights on how to manage an insurance company through different economic cycles by understanding the developments in the financial markets on the insurers balance sheet. This workshop is highly interactive. This means that the concepts will be presented using the simulation software allowing the participants to experience the impact of different economic conditions. Awarding Body Oxyor develops and delivers simulations and learning solutions used in professional education throughout the global financial sector. We have simulations covering global cross sector trading and investing, wholesale and retail banking, risk management, pension and insurance management. Oxyor was established in 2003 primarily to do training for investment banks. In 2007 Oxyor started their simulations department which became a market leader within 5 years with the top training companies, universities and financial institutions. In 2008 the Traders Trophy started a revolution in online financial gaming. The Traders Trophy is now positioned in more than 40 countries across the world with over students competing annually. 4 Key issues covered in the course The characteristics of the different business lines of the insurance industry The challenges and impacts when managing an insurer s balance sheet Different business lines sensitivity to the economic cycle and the insurance (industry) cycle The purpose, and the impact, of capital adequacy on insurers Regulatory capital requirements and the capital allocation of different insurance sub-sectors Solvency ratios Strategic pricing considerations The relationship between growth and profitability in the insurance industry Analysis and interpretation of key insurance ratios Insurance (industry) cycle management Interest rate risk hedging and duration management Decision making under economic uncertainty Course objectives The 3-day course Strategic Management of the Insurance Business is designed to provide the course participants with the latest insights on balance sheet management of insurance companies. Throughout the course the participants will be using the unique Insurance Manager simulation software, developed by Oxyor, to apply their learning in practice. In the simulation, the participants in small groups will act as the Executive Board of a fictitious insurance company. The simulated time horizon will be a period of about 7 to 10 years (where one round, being six months in the simulation, is approximately one hour in real time). During the simulation each group will have to manage their insurance company through different economic cycles, where the financial markets will changes and with them e.g. interest rates and insurance claim behaviour. The participants of this course will gain an in-depth understanding of the most important factors influencing the balance sheet of an insurance company, as well as experience the influence of developments in the financial markets on the insurers balance sheet. Benefits of using a simulation and workshop agenda Insurance companies tend to be long-term investors who need to make long-term decisions. In practice it usually takes at least six months to a year before the impact of decisions can be seen on the insurance company s balance sheet and maybe even longer before the consequences of the decisions can be evaluated. By using the Insurance Manager simulation the course participants will get the opportunity to see how their strategic and tactical management choices will have an impact on the financial situation of their company almost instantly. This will enhance the learning experience significantly. 4

His areas of expertise are Financial Markets, Derivatives, Asset & Liability Management (ALM), Asset Management, Currencies, Interest Rates and Risk Management. After he completed his studies in Investment Theory at the Tilburg University, he started his career on the trading floor at ABN AMRO Amsterdam. He then went to work as a buy-side trader for APG Asset Management (who invest $450 bio globally for Dutch pension funds). In this role he was responsible for the currency trading book, ran a proprietary trading portfolio and traded derivatives on various assets.
