1 2011 Georgia Farm Gate Value Report Compiled and published annually by The Center for Agribusiness & Economic Development AR December 2012

2 Dear Farm Gate User: We are pleased to present the 2011 Farm gate Value Report (FGVR). The FGVR is compiled from a survey of Georgia Cooperative Extension county agents and commodity specialists for the purpose of providing annual county-level information for the value of all food and fiber commodities grown in the state. Many changes within Georgia Cooperative Extension and the Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development have taken place since publication of the 2010 Georgia Farm Gate Value Report. These changes have presented both obstacles and opportunities as we strive to continue providing quality service and products with fewer resources at all levels. The man-hours available for collection, processing, analyses, and publication of this information were not as great as in the past. However, all reasonable effort has been given to verify and validate information included in this report in an effort to maintain the integrity and credibility established by the FGVR. The 2011 FGVR indicates that Georgia s total agricultural production value of $12.95 billion was up $951 million (+7.9%) from Six commodity groups experienced gain in value: Row & Forage crops, Agriculture & Nature based tourism, Poultry and Eggs, Vegetables, Livestock and Aquaculture, and Fruits and Nuts group. Agriculture and Nature based tourism increased by $36,294,697 (+40.1%), Row and Forage group by $593,918,483 (+25.2%), Vegetables by $28,427,790 (3.8%), Livestock and Aquaculture by $33,865,639 (2.7%), Poultry and Eggs by $81,236,811 (1.5%) and Fruit and Nut group value increased by $204,548,351 (+45.4%). Two commodity groups experienced a decrease in value from The Forestry group experienced a decrease of $29,973,080 (-5.2%). Ornamental Horticulture value decreased by $18,139,057(-3.1%). Cotton continues to be the row crop with largest farm gate value of $1,166,526,022. Cotton farm gate value increased by $341,748,730 (+29.3%). Broilers remained the commodity with the largest farm gate value of $ , an increase of 1.7% from We hope that the 2011 Georgia farm gate Value Report will be a useful reference tool. This data may be accessed online at the Georgia Statistics Systems web site, and in Adobe Acrobat format at the center for Agribusiness & Economic Development website, Sincerely, Kent Wolfe Center Director Tommie Shepherd Farm Gate Coordinator i

3 Acknowledgements Special thanks to the Office of Information Technology, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, for the support and maintenance of the Farm Gate database and Web site. We appreciate the work of the Georgia Cooperative Extension Specialists who were consulted in the process of organizing this report along with the Georgia Cooperative Extension Agents and the Program Development Coordinators who provided information for the Farm Gate Value Report. A Comparison of Agricultural Data Sources In addition to the Farm Gate Value Report (FGVR), users of agricultural data in the state of Georgia have had a variety of available resources including Georgia Agricultural Facts (Ag Facts), and The Census of Agriculture (Census). Historically, the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service has published Ag Facts annually. However, the Georgia Agricultural Facts was discontinued after the 2009 issue due to budget and resource cuts. The Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service continues to publish much of the information and post it to their website, but Ag Facts is not available in the previous format. The Census is produced every five years by the United States Department of Agriculture. Georgia Cooperative Extension compiles the FGVR typically each spring to capture the prior year s information. Since each of these reports measure different variables in different ways, it is likely that numbers taken from one report will not exactly match those from another report for similar commodities. The FGVR relies exclusively on Cooperative Extension personnel to provide production information. Each year a survey is distributed to each county Extension office for completion by the county agent. For crops, individual agents are asked to supply county acreage and yields. A suggested price for each crop (determined by Extension specialists) is provided. The price for crops includes an adjustment for all government payments directly associated with the production of the crop and should provide a better indication of the value of the crop. Individual agents have the option of adjusting the price based on county conditions. For livestock, inventory numbers are requested and a formula is then applied to calculate average production for the year and value of production for the county. Although Ag Facts also reports annual data, the types of data and sources differ from the FGVR. Ag Facts surveys a wide range of producers, farmers, agribusinesses and Extension personnel and conducts some field observations. Furthermore, while the FGVR focuses only on value of production data, not all of Ag Facts data is value of production. For some commodities, most notably livestock, sales or cash receipts are used instead. Cash receipts measure the value of marketings for the year, regardless of the year in which the commodity was produced. Another difference between the FGVR and Ag Facts is that the FGVR has county-level value of production data for all of its commodities. Finally, the FGVR contains some commodities which are unavailable in Ag Facts. ii
