Application of ATO/DAS to Thameslink Paul D Booth Principal Programme Engineer (Train Control Systems) 28 October
The Thameslink Network Reduce overcrowding on Thameslink and other cross- London services Increase capacity from 12 to 24 TPH Lengthen trains to 12 cars New cross-london services Reduce loading on London Underground Facilitate dispersal of passengers from St Pancras International Reduce need for interchange between main line and underground services 2
Thameslink Capacity Increase Service Pattern pre 2011 Service Pattern post 2018 Bedford Bedford Peterborough Cambridge Luton Luton St Albans St Albans Welwyn Garden City St Pancras International Blackfriars Elephant & Castle Farringdon Streatham London Bridge Blackfriars Elephant & Castle St Pancras International Farringdon London Bridge Sidcup Bexleyheath Dartford Wimbledon Sutton E Croydon Sevenoaks Wimbledon Sutton E Croydon Sevenoaks Ashford Tattenham Corner Horsham Caterham East Grinstead Brighton Brighton Note: service pattern to be confirmed 3
Signalling and Capacity Main features of the Thameslink Core Area Two track, bi-directionally signalled 50kph (30mph) line speed New fleet of 8 and 12 car dual-voltage trains Four-aspect signalling Block length typically 200m Maximum planned dwell time 60s Peak theoretical capacity of 30TPH However Modelling with Vision has shown that 22-24TPH peak is the best that can be achieved using professional driving techniques ATO is required for reliable 24TPH service with acceptable recovery margins 4
ATO Requirements Requires underlying ATP / Train Control System Could be CBTC or ETCS ATO would be an add-on ETCS will be provided on adjoining routes (MML & ECML) as part of National ERTMS Programme (ref. Interoperability Directive) ETCS was the obvious choice However ATO had not been used with ETCS before 5
ATO Standards for Thameslink Thameslink ATO is proprietary and pre-dates the recent European ATO specifications Based on established ATO experience The supplier, Siemens AG, has contributed to the development of the European ATO over ETCS standard 6
Sub-Systems Onboard Equipment (Siemens AG) ATO & ETCS factory fitted as part of new fleet of dual voltage EMUs (Class 700) Also includes DAS (Connected and Standalone) Also uses ETCS to control SDO and Power Changeover (PCO) through Packet 44 Trackside Equipment (Siemens RA) ETCS Level 2 overlay on lineside signals Additional balises for ATO stopping accuracy and SDO, PCO ATS functionality added to control centre systems as early form of Traffic Management functionality Enhancement to GSM-R network (field strength, smaller cells and quality of service) Relatively little change to signalling control 7

ATO Functions Only available when ETCS is in Full Supervision mode When active, drives to the minimum of the ETCS speed and distance profile the ATO profile including the next stopping location Acts on regulation commands from the trackside (ATS) Transmitted by ERTMS using Packet 44 ERTMS acts only as communication gateway Geographic data (gradient, route info) held in onboard database Doors open automatically when enabled by ETCS and stopped in station Driver must close doors manually and restart train using ATO button 10
ATO Messages On arrival at station ATS message (Dwell Arrival and message Trip Time) 11
ATO Regulation On Departure ATS Response Departure (same or updated message Trip Time) 12
ATO Regulation On arrival at next station ATS message (Dwell Arrival and message Trip Time) 13
Regulation ATS message contains two principal control variables Dwell Time Trip Time to Next Station ATO drives in most energy efficient manner to arrive on time at next station ATO has an onboard default timetable to mitigate against loss of communications Driver must close doors AND press ATO start for train to depart An updated regulation command is accepted any time after departure 14
Driver Advisory System (DAS) The Class 700 train includes DAS functionality Thameslink DAS is Connected DAS whenever public mobile communications are available DAS operates in standalone mode using last received journey plan information when connection to centralised DAS server is not available DAS uses onboard database of geographic and route information DAS is active in ETCS area if ATO not engaged Functionally, DAS is a mode of ATO where advisory information is displayed to the driver instead of ATO controlling power and braking directly 15
