Our mission is to assist country families affected by cancer by providing accommodation and practical support while building community based volunteer networks and raising awareness of inequities facing country people. At Can Assist we are committed to ensuring that all people in NSW, regardless of where they live, have access to cancer treatment and care. By providing support for accommodation and financial assistance to people from rural and regional NSW we ensure that country people are given the same opportunities and choices about the kind of treatment they receive as people in city centres. Our vision is that every country community, family and individual should have equitable access to cancer care and support services. Our values of equity, integrity, community and hope are the building blocks of all our activities. Just before Christmas, we received a request to assist a young man suffering from an aggressive cancer. He required a portable oxygen tank in order to travel for treatment. He spoke of the hot summers where he lived and said there were frequent power outages, leaving him afraid that his home oxygen system would not work without electricity. He was most grateful to receive assistance from us. Fantastic assistance during a very stressful time. Mr A, MANNING VALLEY This gentleman was in tears with all the help we gave him, he couldn t believe it. I said That s why we are doing what we are doing, everyone has their own story. Mr J, WAGGA WAGGA Mrs C, ORANGE BRANCH Can Assist helped me and my family with expenses and eased the financial burden. It was a great help and very much appreciated. Mrs N, DUBBO I can t thank you enough. It s just been so full-on the last two years thank you so much. A home away from home during the toughest of times for families. Wagga is blessed to have such a special place. Mr R, TEMORA I would like to express my gratitude for the financial and moral support we have received from Can Assist Hay. They work tirelessly to ensure that the journey of a cancer patient is made a little less confronting and it is amazing. Thank you for your continued support of myself and my family whilst undergoing treatment away from home. Mrs K, HAY CH, FINLEY CAN ASSIST ANNUAL REPORT

3 PRESIDENT S REPORT THANK YOU TO OUR SUPPORTERS Dear Friends, At Can Assist, our strength comes from our ability to work together. This 2018 Annual Report invites us to reflect deeply on your work grounded in the communities that matter to us. Thank you to all the branch volunteers across NSW working to advance the values and the vision and to the donors, who help support our efforts. This wonderful charity of Can Assist is truly a family, steeped in a proud history of 63 years. Thank you to my fellow volunteer board, Vicki Wade, Emma Phillips, Michael Jackson, Graeme Kruger and David Graham for devoting many hours this year to oversee the success of the governance of Can Assist. This wonderful charity of Can Assist is truly a family, steeped in a proud history of 63 years. A very humble and special thank you to Vicki Wade. Vicki is a member of the Griffith Branch and an active contributor for fundraising for the branch. Vicki leaves the board at this year s AGM, we are grateful for Vicki s contribution and tireless efforts. A special mention of her wise counsel as a Director since Director David Graham is moving from Moree to his home district of Wagga Wagga. As branch President of Can Assist Moree, David will be missed dearly. We look forward to both his and his dear family s safe arrival in Wagga Wagga. His valuable contribution to our Charity will continue, as a Director and a volunteer to the Wagga Wagga branch and Lilier Lodge. Thank you to the team at Lilier Lodge, to our volunteers and our joint venture partner CCNSW. As you read within these pages, the strong support for Lilier, and our expanded volunteer network has ensured the love and support for families will continue long into the future. Thank you to John Colvin and his family, who continues to serve as our patron. A wonderful family legacy, which we are proud to uphold. Thank you to SunRice, who graciously allow your Board to use the facilities of their Boardroom throughout the year. Recently I attended a funeral of someone very special and this poem was read in her honour as a volunteer to the Can Assist community. Beautiful words: Why be a volunteer: It s not for the money, it s not for the fame. It s not for any personal gain. It s just for love of fellowman. It s just to send a helping hand. That s something you cannot buy with wealth. It s not for the medals won with pride. It s for that feeling deep inside. It s that reward down in our heart. It s that feeling that you have been a part. Of helping others far and near that makes you be a volunteer. Vicki Meyer President We are incredibly lucky to have such a diverse group of financial supporters who share our vision. This year 1,347 people were accommodated in our facility, a 29.5% increase on the previous year. But we haven t stopped there, continual improvement has happened in all sorts of ways and with the kind generosity of local companies, organisations and volunteers. The removal in November of 72 conifer trees from around the perimeter of Lilier Lodge allowed us to brighten our views and provide more outdoor space. Thanks to the three tree companies Andrew Hamilton Riverina Tree Services, Kendells Tree Services, D&K Tree Services, and crane operator Riverina Crane Services, for their excellent work, all of which was provided free of charge. 6 HOW WE VE GROWN KEEPING CONNECTED The strength of Can Assist lies in its 55 strong branch network. Covering the length and breadth of NSW, these grass root volunteer branches are the reason why Can Assist has been so successful for so many years in assisting those in need. The selfless great work, within each branch, undertaken by our volunteers in looking after people in their community reflects and confirms the values we uphold of equity, integrity, community and hope. event notifications last financial year there were 435 notified branch events and 55 notified community events. Branch events included music or trivia nights, Melbourne cup lunches, football games, secret garden lunches and car shows; community events included debutant balls, Mexican fiestas, dancing with the stars and Gold Days. It is a testament to each branch s footprint that local businesses and communities support Can Assist so generously. Our Community The selfless great work, within each branch, undertaken by our volunteers in looking after people in their community reflects and confirms the values we uphold of equity, integrity, community and hope. The first country branch was formed in Forbes in January Since then our representation in regional communities continues to grow. Over the last year, we have welcomed two new branches, Can Assist Finley and Can Assist Tocumwal. As in 1956, it usually takes a personal experience of cancer or a specific interest for a new branch to form and we welcome and thank these branches in joining. Unfortunately, the need for assistance has not abated with over two million dollars in assisted payments made by our branches this last financial year. Through our branch network, we continue to assist in lifting the burden on country families who face reduced income and increased expenses because of their cancer diagnosis. The heavy lifting of fundraising is commendable by all branches especially as NSW has faced the ongoing tough drought conditions. The enthusiasm in planning and running events is respected and congratulated. All up, we received 490 Whilst all our tireless volunteers are worthy of recognition, there has been special recognition and thanks to those that have provided 10 years plus service. For those who have provided support beyond normal expectations we have extended honorary membership for all that they have done for Can Assist and within their communities. The Board were uplifted by their visit to Narrandera in May. Fourteen branches from across the Riverina gathered to meet the board members and discuss the efforts and challenges of the organisation and come up with ideas on how to survive into the future. The board thoroughly enjoys and benefits enormously from this contact with the branches and looks forward to future and continuing opportunities to do so. We thank our Can Assist branches for their solid support, and each volunteer for giving themselves selflessly to assist ensuring we remain present, relevant and meaningful to each community. 12 AUDITOR S INDEPENDENCE DECLARATION INDEPENDENT AUDITOR REPORT Auditor s Independence Declaration under subdivision 60-C section of Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Act 2012 To: the directors of Cancer Patients Assistance Society of New South Wales I declare that, to the best of my knowledge and belief, in relation to the audit for the financial year ended 30 June 2018 there have been: i. no contraventions of the auditor independence requirements as set out in the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Act 2012 in relation to the audit; and ii. no contraventions of any applicable code of professional conduct in relation to the audit. To the members of Cancer Patients Assistance Society of New South Wales Report on the audit of the Financial Report Qualified Opinion We have audited the Financial Report, of the Cancer Patients Assistance Society of New South Wales (the Company). In our opinion except for the possible effects of the matter described in the Basis for Qualified opinion section of our report, the accompanying Financial Report of the Company is in accordance with Division 60 of the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) Act 2012, including: i. giving a true and fair view of the Company s financial position as at 30 June 2018, and of its financial performance and its cash flows for the year ended on that date; and ii. complying with Australian Accounting Standards Reduced Disclosure Requirements and Division 60 of the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Regulation KPMG The Financial Report comprises: i. Statement of financial position as at 30 June ii. Statement of profit or loss and other comprehensive income, Statement of changes in equity, and Statement of cash flows for the year then ended. Jonathan Rudman Partner Parramatta, 15 November 2018 iii. Notes including a summary of significant accounting policies. iv. Directors declaration. Basis for Qualified opinion Fundraising and donation revenue in the form of cash donations are a significant source of fundraising and donation revenue for the Company. The Company has determined that it is not practicable to maintain controls over the collection of cash donations prior to entry into its financial records. Accordingly, as the evidence available to us regarding fundraising and donation revenue from this source was limited, our audit procedures with respect to cash donations was restricted to the amounts recorded in the financial records. We therefore are unable to express an opinion whether the cash donations to the Company, reported in the accompanying Financial Report is complete. We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our qualified opinion. Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor s responsibilities for the audit of the Financial Report section of our report. We are independent of the Company in accordance with the auditor independence requirements of the ACNC Act 2012 and the ethical requirements of the Accounting Professional and Ethical Standards Board s APES 110 Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (the Code) that are relevant to our audit of the Financial Report in Australia. We have fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with the Code. 20 CAN ASSIST ANNUAL REPORT or upon request by ing admin@canassist.com.au. or upon request by ing admin@canassist.com.au. 13 INDEPENDENT AUDITOR REPORT INDEPENDENT AUDITOR REPORT Other information Other Information is financial and non-financial information in Cancer Patients Assistance Society of New South Wales s annual reporting which is provided in addition to the Financial Report and the Auditor s Report. The Directors are responsible for the Other Information. The Other Information we obtained prior to the date of this Auditor s Report was the Directors report. Our opinion on the Financial Report does not cover the Other Information and, accordingly, we do not express any form of assurance conclusion thereon. In connection with our audit of the Financial Report, our responsibility is to read the Other Information. In doing so, we consider whether the Other Information is materially inconsistent with the Financial Report or our knowledge obtained in the audit, or otherwise appears to be materially misstated. We are required to report if we conclude that there is a material misstatement of this Other Information, and based on the work we have performed on the Other Information that we obtained prior to the date of this Auditor s Report we have nothing to report. If, based on the work we have performed, we conclude that there is a material misstatement of this other information, we are required to report that fact. As described in the Basis for Qualified opinion section above, we were unable to obtain sufficient appropriate evidence about the completeness of cash donations. Accordingly, we are unable to conclude whether or not the other information is materially misstated with respect to this matter. Responsibilities of the Directors for the Financial Report The Directors are responsible for: i. Preparing the Financial Report that gives a true and fair view in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards - Reduced Disclosures Requirements and the ACNC. ii. Preparing the Financial Report in accordance with Section 24(2) of the Charitable Fundraising (NSW) Act 1991 and Regulations. iii. Implementing necessary internal control to enable the preparation of a Financial Report that gives a true and fair view and is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. iv. Assessing the Company s ability to continue as a going concern. This includes disclosing, as applicable, matters related to going concern and using the going concern basis of accounting unless they either intend to liquidate the Company or to cease operations, or have no realistic alternative but to do so. Auditor s responsibilities for the audit of the Financial Report Our objective is: i. to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the Financial Report as a whole is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error; and ii. to issue an Auditor s Report that includes our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance, but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or error. They are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the economic decisions of users taken on the basis of this Financial Report. As part of an audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards, we exercise professional judgement and maintain professional scepticism throughout the audit. We also: i. Identify and assess the risks of material misstatement of the Financial Report, whether due to fraud or error, design and perform audit procedures responsive to those risks, and obtain audit evidence that is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion. The risk of not detecting a material misstatement resulting from fraud is higher than for one resulting from error, as fraud may involve collusion, forgery, intentional omissions, misrepresentations, or the override of internal control. ii. Obtain an understanding of internal control relevant to the Audit in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the registered Company s internal control. iii. Evaluate the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates and related disclosures made by the Directors. iv. Conclude on the appropriateness of the Directors use of the going concern basis of accounting and, based on the audit evidence obtained, whether a material uncertainty exists related to events or conditions that may cast significant doubt on the registered Company s ability to continue as a going concern. If we conclude that a material uncertainty exists, we are required to draw attention in our Auditor s Report to the related disclosures in the Financial Report or, if such disclosures are inadequate, to modify our opinion. Our conclusions are based on the audit evidence obtained up to the date of our Auditor s Report. However, future events or conditions may cause the registered Company to cease to continue as a going concern. v. Evaluate the overall presentation, structure and content of the Financial Report, including the disclosures, and whether the Financial Report represents the underlying transactions and events in a manner that achieves fair presentation. We communicate with the Directors committee members of the registered Company regarding, among other matters, the planned scope and timing of the audit and significant audit findings, including any significant deficiencies in internal control that we identify during our audit. 22 CAN ASSIST ANNUAL REPORT or upon request by ing admin@canassist.com.au. or upon request by ing admin@canassist.com.au. 14 INDEPENDENT AUDITOR REPORT WE VE GOT NSW COVERED In addition we have: Since 1955, Can Assist s network of branches have grown to over 55. These branches raise vital funds to provide direct support to those in their local communities affected by cancer. The Sydney office raises funds for all those who live in a community without a local Can Assist branch. i. Obtained an understanding of the internal control structure for fundraising appeal activities. ii. Examined on a test basis of evidence supporting compliance with the accounting and associated record keeping requirements for fundraising appeal activities pursuant to the Acts and Regulations. We have not audited on a continuous basis the accounting records relied upon for reporting on fundraising appeal activities. These do not necessarily reflect accounting adjustments after the event or normal year-end financial adjustments required for the preparation of Financial Report such as accruals, prepayments, provisioning and valuations. Opinion pursuant to the Charitable Fundraising Act (NSW) 1991 In our opinion, except for the possible effects of matter described in the basis for qualified opinion paragraph: i. the Financial Report gives a true and fair view of the Company s financial result of fundraising appeal activities for the financial year ended 30 June 2018; ii. the Financial Report has been properly drawn up, and the associated records have been properly kept for the period from 01 July 2017 to 30 June 2018, in accordance with the Charitable Fundraising Act (NSW) 1991 and Regulations; iii. money received as a result of fundraising appeal activities conducted during the period from 1 July 2017 to 30 June 2018 has been properly accounted for and applied in accordance with the Charitable Fundraising Act (NSW) 1991 and Regulations; and iv. there are reasonable grounds to believe that the Company will be able to pay its debts as and when they fall due. KPMG Jonathan Rudman Partner 15 November 2018 Due to travel and accommodation expenses, it can easily cost a country family affected by cancer up to five times more than a city family just to access treatment. The reality is that many country mums and dads simply can t afford treatment, let alone the weeks spent away from their family and work. RICHARD LAMB, MUDGEE Balranald Being a member of our local Can Assist branch gives me the opportunity to meet and greet so many people who have been affected by cancer. Our fund raising is ongoing to give most valued assistance to our local residents who are cancer suffers. It is so rewarding.
