2 MESSAGE FROM THE CARDINAL CHAIRMAN S REPORT This year marks the 2th Anniversary of the inception of the Sydney Catholic Development Fund (CDF). I believe this is a significant milestone as the CDF has always based its endeavours on the good works of the Catholic Church within the Archdiocese of Sydney and its charitable works. These endeavours are possible only by the ongoing loyal support from our Clergy, our Parishes, our Schools, the Catholic Education Office and all the Religious Congregations and Agencies who put their trust and faith in the CDF. Your support is deeply appreciated by me and by all who benefit from the CDF s work. During this anniversary year, the Fund has seen its asset base grow to over $81 million and it continues to grow through astute and careful planning and the reliable judgement of its Advisory Board and Management. Many of the most important capital works in the Archdiocese would not occur without the internal funding made possible by the CDF. Equally, many of the pastoral works simply would not be possible to the extent they are today without the funds provided to the Archdiocese by the CDF over these years. As we look back on these 2 years and indeed this financial year particularly, we can take great pride in the contributions made by everyone who s been involved with the CDF. I would especially like to express my sincere appreciation to the Advisory Board and the Management and staff for their ongoing commitment to the mission of the Church. The first 2 years of the CDF have provided a much worthy foundation for the Archdiocese of Sydney, may I take this opportunity to commend the CDF to you and ask for God s continued blessings on the CDF, its Advisory Board, clients and staff in the years ahead. In this 2th Anniversary year, on behalf of the Advisory Board of the CDF, I have great pleasure in presenting to you the 213 Annual Report. Firstly, may I acknowledge sincerely and with gratitude, the professionalism, commitment and charitable use of the time and the skills of my fellow Advisory Board members. My thanks also goes to the CDF Management and staff, whose hard-work, dedication and expertise, continues to help build a secure and trusted CDF providing our clients with excellent service and a wide range of quality products and services. The CDF s business model is prudentially sound and once again, the 212/13 results are proof of its strength. Assets grew by over 5% to $81 million and investments grew by over 5% to $761 million. The surplus result was a healthy $16.2 million, up by 5.8%. The CDF distributed to Parishes and the Archdiocese over $11M and indeed, since the CDF commenced in 1993, has distributed over $11 million to the Parishes and the Archdiocese. This is a remarkable record of achievement and one which everyone associated with the CDF over the past 2 years should be proud. There is no doubt, this continuing success story cannot be realised without the loyalty and support from our Parishes, schools, Archdiocesan agencies, religious congregations and other Church entities. These results are a testament to your past support which is greatly appreciated and we look forward to providing even greater levels of service in the 213/14 year. 4 CDF BOARD MGR JOHN USHER AO, B.th, B.Soc Std, M.S.W, E.V., AM MR DANNY CASEY B.Comm, M.Ec, CPA FIVE YEAR VIEW Mgr Usher is the Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Sydney and the Parish Priest of the Mortlake Parish who has been a Board member since 25. He is Chairman of the Board and the Nominations Committee. Danny is the Business Manager of the Archdiocese of Sydney who has been on the Board since 23. He is a member of the Audit and Risk Committee and the Nominations Committee ANNUAL SURPLUS / $ MILLIONS 6 4 LOANS / $ MILLIONS MR ROBERT BAKER B.Bus, FCA Robert Baker joined the CDF board in 211 and is a member of the Audit and Risk Committee. He is a partner of the firm Pricewaterhousecoopers. MR WILLIAM (BILL) D APICE KCSG, LL.B, MAICD Bill is a partner of Makinson and d Apice Lawyers who has been a Board member since , DEPOSITS / $ MILLIONS 1, TOTAL ASSETS / $ MILLIONS MR JOHN FLYNN John is a Finance Consultant who has been on the Board since 25. He is the Chairman of the Audit and Risk Committee. MR WILLIAM WALKER B.Sc., Dip. Ed., Dip. Geoscience, M.Ed., Dip. Ed. (RE), M.Acc., CPA William is the Director of Financial Services for the Sydney Catholic Education Office who joined the Board in 21. He is a member of the Audit and Risk Committee MR KARL MORRIS B Comm, FAICD, MSDIA, F Fin FR DANAI PENOLLAR BSc, STB, BA (Phil)/BTh Karl is the Executive Chairman of Ord Minnett who has been a Board member since 27. 5 OUR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES INCLUDE WE ARE COMMITTED TO Current and Investment accounts for Parishes, Catholic Schools, Clergy, Religious Congregations and Church Agencies (Subject to APRA Regulations). Loans for the building of Churches and other Parish related initiatives, Catholic Schools, Aged Care Accommodation, Hospitals and other Church related projects. Loans to Clergy for car purchases and approved study courses. Loans to Catholic Schools for the acquisition of computers and office equipment and other necessary capital expenditure. Assisting Parishes with the financial management of their assets and other financial needs. Special services for key Archdiocesan agencies and the Archdiocesan car plan. Other procured financial services and facilities such as BPay Biller and Payer, CDF Online, Merchant Transaction Processing, Credit Cards, EFTPOS and Electronic Funds Transfer. THE PRIMARY OBJECTS OF THE FUND ARE: To provide a source of finance and credit for capital and other expenditures in the work of the Catholic Church primarily within the Archdiocese of Sydney. To assist in the provision of better financial management of the investments and assets of the Archdiocese, Parishes and other Catholic Church entities. To provide a means of promoting the charitable and educational activities of the Archdiocese. WE ARE COMMITTED TO: Maximising the use of Church funds by providing competitive loan and deposit rates to our Parishes, Schools, Religious Orders, Catholic Health and Aged Care Entities and Agencies of the Archdiocese. Assisting Parishes, Schools and other Church organisations with a high standard of personal service in a range of financial products and support in the form of advice and expertise. Managing funds invested with the Development Fund prudently and profitably for the good of the wider Church. Developing and maintaining effective information and financial accounting systems. Endeavouring to provide a stable and equitable interest rate environment while minimising costs. Providing a surplus so that the pastoral works of the Archdiocese may continue. Value adding our technical and personnel resources to a wider number of Parishes and Agencies on financial management issues.
