1 Campus Alerts NONE Escort Services: At night the SBCCD PD is here to help you get to your car safely. If you need an escort call us at : November 18, 2016 Volume 2, Issue 44 Here s what you can and can t do now that marijuana is legal 1. You ll have to be an adult to legally smoke pot. Dubbed the Adult Use of Marijuana Act, the ini a ve would allow people who are 21 and older to possess, transport and buy up to 28.5 grams of marijuana for recrea onal use. That expands on exis ng law that allows cannabis use for medical purposes. For those who don t want to buy pot from special marijuana stores, the ini a ve would allow adults to grow and use up to six marijuana plants. Medical marijuana pa ents may s ll possess the quan es necessary to meet their medical needs, even in excess of the 28.5 gram limit. 2. Don t plan on lighting up just anywhere. You won t be able to light up a marijuana joint on the sidewalk or in a bar. Under the ballot measure, marijuana s ll cannot be smoked in public places, unless it is allowed by a local ordinance. In addi on, marijuana cannot be smoked in places where state law already prohibits tobacco smoking, including restaurants and theaters. And smoking pot would s ll be outlawed within 1,000 feet of a school, day care center or youth center while children are present. 3. Want to smoke marijuana in public? There s a ine for that. People busted smoking marijuana in public can expect to face a fine of up to $100. Those caught smoking pot in a place where tobacco smoking is prohibited or near a school can be fined up to $250. Minors who violate the rules will be required to complete four hours of a drug educa on program or counseling, and up to 10 hours of community service. 4. Kids will not be able to buy pot under Proposition 64. Proponents of Proposi on 64 say the ballot measure was wri en to keep pot out of the hands of minors. It would prohibit the sale of marijuana to nonmedical users under age 21. Medical marijuana can s ll be used by people under 21. In addi on, cannabis products could not be designed to appeal to children or to be easily confused with commercially sold candy. Marijuana products also would have to be packaged in child resistant containers, and pot shops would be prohibited from allowing anyone under 21 years old on their premises. MISSON STATEMENT The SBCCD Police Department, in concert with the Board of Trustees, is committed to providing a safe and secure learning and working environment for all students and employees. This will be accomplished through a cooperative and coordinated effort involving all departments and the SBCCD employees, law enforcement agencies and community. 5. Selling pot without a license will come with penalties ines and jail time. Selling marijuana without a license can result in a misdemeanor charge with penal es of up to six months in jail and $500 in fines. In addi on, selling marijuana or engaging in any other commercial ac vity in regard to the drug without a license comes with civil penal es of up to three mes the amount of the license fee for each viola on. 6. If you want to sell weed, you re going to have to tell the state. Want to open a pot shop? You will need a state license. Want to grow marijuana for others? You ll s ll need a license. Those who grow, process, transport or sell marijuana must get a state license, and pay a fee that hasn t been set yet to cover the cost of the state processing and enforcing the licenses. Local governments could also require operators to obtain a license, and businesses would not be able to sell marijuana within 600 feet of a school, day care center or youth center. Those running shops must undergo a background check to obtain a state license, and they can be denied if they have felony convic ons involving violence, For more informa on on crime in our Country please visit: h p:// fraud, drug trafficking or selling drugs to a minor.
