1 Campus Alerts SBVC & CHC NONE December 12, 2014 Volume 1, Issue 12 Identity Theft Identity theft happens when someone steals your personal information and uses it without your permission. It s a serious crime that can wreak havoc with your finances, credit history, and reputation. It can also take time, money, and patience to resolve. What to Do Right Away 1. Place an Initial Fraud Alert 2. File an Identity Theft Report with Your Local PD 3. Order your Credit Report Monitor Your Progress Resolving identity theft takes phone calls and letters. Create a system to organize your paper and calls, and to track deadlines. Extended Fraud Alerts and Credit Freezes If you are a victim of identity theft and have filed an Identity Theft Report, you may want to place an extended fraud alert or a credit freeze on your credit file. There are important differences between these two options: A fraud alert is a special message on the report that a credit issuer receives when checking a consumer s credit rating; fraud alerts are federal rights intended for people who believe they are, or who have actually been, identity theft victims. The availability of a credit freeze depends on state law and consumer reporting company s policies. A security freeze means that your credit file cannot be seen by potential creditors, insurance companies, or employers doing background checks. If you live in California, you have the right to put a security freeze on your credit file. Some states charge a fee for placing or removing a credit freeze, but it s free to place or remove a fraud alert. A security freeze is free to identity theft victims who have filed an Identity Theft Report. If you are not an identity theft victim and you are under 65 years of age, it will cost you $10 to place a freeze with each of the three credit bureaus. If you suspect someone is misusing your personal information, acting quickly is the best way to limit the damage.
