2017 business owner market study Turn your priorities into realities 1
Business owners like you shared their priorities and challenges with us Small business owners are the backbone of the U.S. economy and a mainstay in every community. Like other Americans, they have busy schedules and financial planning isn t likely at the top of the to-do list. But it should be. To help with these conversations, we conducted a survey of business owners. The results provide a great snapshot of their priorities and actions. These insights can help give you a sense of what your peers are doing and provide a benchmark as you create and refine your own priorities and action plan. Using this guide See how priorities vary among business owners... page 3 Determine if your priorities and realities are similar or different... 4 Assemble a team of advisors Get started today About the survey
See how priorities vary among business owners We asked business owners to rank their top priorities and whether they had a plan in place today. Even though business owners rank these as important, many still need help protecting what matters most. 1st Business protection 36% of owners have a plan 2nd Income protection 33% of owners have a plan 3rd Health & wellness solutions 58% of owners have a plan 4th Non-medical benefits 50% of owners have a plan 5th Qualified retirement plans 52% of owners have a plan 6th Supplemental key employee benefits 30% of owners have a plan 7th Succession planning 51% of owners have a plan 8th Survivor income 68% of owners have a plan 9th Legacy & estate planning 69% of owners have a plan 10th Voluntary benefits 30% of owners have a plan 3
Determine if your priorities and realities are similar or different Running a successful business takes a lot of hard work and is full of challenges. But having a plan in place can help ensure you get where you want to be. Are some or all of these a priority for you and your business? Let s take a closer look at them. Solutions for your business Plan for and protect the future Business protection (#1 priority) Helps safeguard the integrity, cash flow and value of the business if unexpected events like death and disability occur. Among business owners who have a plan in place to protect their business, key person life and disability insurance are the most popular with significant growth in disability overhead expense and key person disability insurance. Succession planning (#7 priority) Formal agreements help ensure everyone involved is on the same page when it comes time to transition the business. Right now, business owner optimism is on the rise with fewer owners saying they ll never retire. Half of business owners have a plan in place. Don t forget to have the proper funding vehicles like savings or insurance to exercise the plan, and to review everything periodically. 4
Solutions for your lifestyle Protect what you ve built Income protection (#2 priority) Helps replace a portion of income and provides continuous cash flow if you re too sick or hurt to work. A large majority (85%) of business owners who have income protection would recommend it to others. Survivor income (#8 priority) Life insurance helps provide for your family if you die and can be used to help you achieve certain financial objectives. You ll be in good company when you buy life insurance almost 70% of your peers own it. Be sure to consider the type of life insurance you buy either term or permanent insurance based on your objectives. Estate and legacy planning (#9 priority) Helpful to consider as you grow your business. These plans and/or agreements (with proper funding vehicles) can help ensure there are assets both personal and business to meet your lifetime objectives. Wills remain the most common wealth transfer plan type, but usage has been declining over time. Don t get caught up in that trend - when planned right, there can be several advantages. Solutions for your employees Reward and retain your talent Health & wellness solutions (#3 priority) These are employer-sponsored programs that provide health-related benefits and organized activities to help employees maintain or improve their health. Comprehensive health insurance remains the most common solution, with Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and wellness solutions showing growth. These solutions work together to keep employees healthy and working. Plus, they can be designed for your needs and budget. Non-medical (#4 priority) and voluntary benefits (#10 priority) Offered at the worksite, they can be employer-paid or employee-paid (voluntary) and typically include benefit options like dental, disability, life, and vision insurance. Most business owners say their employee benefits package helps with employee retention. Qualified retirement plans (#5 priority) These are defined contribution and defined benefit retirement solutions, including 401(k) plans and traditional defined benefit plans that are generally made available to the majority of employees. The 401(k) plan continues to be the most popular option offered, and its popularity is growing. Supplemental key employee benefits (#6 priority) These are typically targeted to key employees who are critical to the success of the business. Disability income insurance remains the most popular supplemental key employee benefit followed by executive bonuses and deferred compensation. When looking at what benefits to offer these employees, affordability and ability to attract/retain are key considerations. 5
Assemble a team of advisors 60% of business owners use a financial professional. Nearly half (49%) use a CPA, followed by an attorney (37%), to assist with insurance and employee benefit needs 25% don t plan to look for a financial professional. Those who are looking for a financial professional want expertise at a reasonable cost. Working with a trusted financial professional, CPA and attorney can provide the complete support you need to move your business forward. Their background and insights can work together to give you a more holistic perspective. Is your team complete? If not, ask one of them for a recommendation. 6
Get started today Step 1: What are your priorities? Solutions for your business Business protection Succession planning Solutions for your lifestyle Income protection Survivor income Estate & legacy planning Solutions for your employees Health & wellness solutions Non-medical and voluntary benefits Qualified retirement plans Supplemental key employee benefits Step 2: Connect with your team: Financial advisor: CPA: Attorney: Other: Notes Your goals, our purpose No matter what s important to you, Principal is here to help you identify and implement solutions that are right for your business needs. 7
About the survey Harris Interactive conducted 1,005 online interviews from January 9 through January 26, Interviews were conducted using the Harris Poll Panel. Respondents qualified to take the survey if they met the following criteria: United States resident age 21 or older Currently employed, either full time, part time or selfemployed Business owner of at least 5 percent of the company Actively manage their business Own a company with between two and less than 500 employees Results are weighted for company size based on the number of employees, and annual sales. Potential respondents were selected from those who agreed to participate in Harris Poll surveys. Because the sample is based on those who agreed to be invited to participate in the Harris Poll online research panel, no estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated. Let s connect.
