1 ROTARY INTERNATIONAL RESOURCE EXTRA REGIONAL INFORMATION BULLETIN ROTARY INTERNATIONAL SOUTH PACIFIC AND PHILIPPINES OFFICE November 2017 VOL 14 No 5 THE ROTARY FOUNDATION Lots of action for Foundation Month The level of frantic activity during Foundation Month leaves the distinct feeling that support for our own charity, The Rotary Foundation, is as strong as ever. All across our region the activity level has been tense as we strive to maximize returns to ensure the good work continues. Our clubs and districts in the Philippines take Foundation Month very seriously indeed. This is the month where a cavalcade of TRF Dinners and functions spring up across the land and we see strong and positive recognition for those Rotarians and clubs that have made a difference. It s also the month when contributions come flooding in as Rotarians reach for the sky. That s not to say it doesn t happen in Australia and New Zealand! We ve had a couple of highly successful Million Dollar Dinner events during the month and that s added greatly to The Foundation s ability to do good in the world. Whether it s cash up front or a commitment to provide for The Rotary Foundation in the estate planning process, it all ends up doing good. Polio still remains our top priority with the job almost done just 15 cases so far this year (14 th November) and that compares pretty favorably with the same period last year (32). Will that case reported on October 17 th be the last case? Or will the next case reported be the last case? These questions can t be answered so the pressure remains. Membership numbers are still an issue in New Zealand and Australia so there s no letting up in that area. We have something like just 40,000 members from a pool of something like 8 million good and true people so why don t we do better than that? Maybe it s the meeting, maybe it s the people, maybe it s the lack of excitement that makes us want to be part of something very special. All I know is that as a Rotarian, I m going to try harder to bring membership growth to my club and help secure the future for generations to come. If I don t do that, my club will lose its sense of purpose, and I ll lose something very dear to me. Moving on to the good news, it was fantastic to hear that Club and District Support Supervisor Andrew Best completed the Tucson Ride to End Polio and easily beat his targeted time of under seven hours. Andrew finished at around the sixand-a-half hour mark which is pretty good for a rookie road racer. He also managed to raise sponsorship of more than $15,000 for polio, and when expanded with the Gates match it ends up being in excess of $45,000. Well done Andrew! You ve made us all very proud of your achievements. Best wishes Bruce Allen Manager, International Office & Foundation Services
2 Message from RI Director RY , Zones 7 and 8 Noel Trevaskis Member: Rotary Club of Bega The month of November is Rotary Foundation month, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you all for your support of the Rotary Foundation. There have been a number of million dollar" dinners that have been held or are going to be held. OCTOBER Thank you 2017 to VOL all those 13 No people 4 involved in making these fundraising events highly successful, success only comes after a lot of hard work. We just had notification of another case of polio this last week which takes the total for this year to date to 15, this is disappointing. However we are still better off than where we were at for same time last year when there were 32 cases. District Governors Elect are getting prepared for their training at the International Assembly in San Diego in January. The International Assembly is an incredible experience that I sure you will all enjoy. The opportunity to be able to meet other Rotarians from around the world and sit with them over meals and mix with socially will I am sure give you all great memories. Finally, the international Convention early registration will close soon, I would like to ask you to encourage all Rotarians in your Districts to attend the International Convention in Toronto in June Regards, Noel REGIONAL MEMBERSHIP OFFICER UPDATE Engaging your community this holiday season As the holiday season approaches, many clubs are planning fabulous parties and celebrations to offer special occasions to engage in fellowship. This time of year can often bring out the best in people- they re warmer, more hopeful, and more appreciative. And while this season is filled with kindness and giving, it s also an opportunity for inclusivity. For the members you haven t seen in while (the ones starting to disengage from the club), are you expressing your interest in how they ve been and that you look forward to catching up at your party? For the Rotaractors, Youth Exchange students and their host parents, and Rotary Alumni, is your club making an effort to include them in upcoming celebrations or planning to connect with them in another meaningful way this season? For your community, have you done a recent community assessment to see what the largest needs are and how your club might help? Is your club spreading cheer and awareness about what Rotary is and how they can become a person of action? I hope that if you haven t already, that you make time to seize this opportunity to build better connections both within and outside of your club. Need help with ideas or want to share what your club is planning? Join the conversation in the Membership Best Practices Discussion Group on My Rotary by clicking here! Lastly, I want to wish you and yours a very, merry Christmas. Cheers! Julie Aubry, Regional Membership Officer for Zones 7b and 8 (based in Evanston, IL, USA) Julie.Aubry@rotary.org

4 COUNCIL ON RESOLUTIONS RESULTS ARE IN! The first ever Council on Resolutions took place online between 15 October and 15 November and the results are in! 17 resolutions were adopted and 21 were rejected. Some of the resolutions that were accepted include: requesting the RI Board to consider supporting ecologically-sustainable initiatives; requesting the Trustees to consider adding sustainable development and environmental protection as area of focus; requesting the RI Board to consider not increasing Rotary s due at 2019 Council; and requesting the RI Board to consider researching the impact of club flexibility. Representatives from all of Rotary s districts voted on resolutions that clubs, districts, the RI Board, and the General Council or Conference of RIBI proposed. The RI Board of Directors will now consider all resolutions that the Council adopts. The Council on Resolutions meets online every year to vote on proposed resolutions. Resolutions are requests to the RI Board or the TRF Trustees to take an action that is outside the scope of the constitutional documents. The Council on Legislation and the Council on Resolutions give you, as Rotarians, a voice in how your organisation is governed. All Rotarians can view the results, find detailed information about each resolution and learn more about how the Councils work on My Rotary at: ROTARACT TURNS 50 Rotaract turns 50 this year! Since the first Rotaract club was formed in 1968, Rotaract has grown to over 10,000 clubs worldwide. But how do we ensure another 50 years of service, leadership, and global impact? There will be an exciting panel discussion on 6 December, 2-3pm Chicago time to celebrate the accomplishments of the program and to charter its future. Hear from an expert panel of Rotaractors, dual members, Rotaract alumni and President-elect Barry Rassin as we explore: how did we get here? what have we accomplished along the way? how do we ensure 50 more years of service, leadership, and global impact? Strengthen your knowledge of Rotaract, Rotary's program that engages young leaders ages Discover how Rotaract is a vital part of the success of Rotary, and how vibrant, engaged Rotaract clubs are changing the ways we think about service and leadership. If you can t get up that early in the morning you ll be able to see a recording of the discussion via Facebook live: Barbara Mifsud Coordinator Club and District Support South Pacific and Philippines Office 4
5 ANNUAL FUND The Annual Fund is the engine room that funds our District and Global Grant projects. It delivers the DDF from which you all make decisions on the funding of a project or scholarship. The opportunities to contribute to the Annual Fund are limitless. For too long we have looked to our members to make a contribution at any number of levels, be it at $100 per year, or as a Paul Harris Society member at US$1,000 per year. Ask yourself the following: If I believe in the work of the Rotary Foundation and I contribute on an annual basis, why haven t I asked my friends to contribute as well?. In my own club, a quarter of the contributors are from outside our membership. It is a way of growing the contribution base. There donors believe that Rotary is a trusted brand and that the contribution will really be put to good use. There are over 60,000 charities in Australia, over 25,000 in New Zealand and an unknown number in The Philippines and other countries within our region. All these charities are asking for money. On average, we all give regularly to at least three charities on a regular basis. Yet as a Rotarian, how many of us make a personal contribution to The Rotary Foundation. In the Philippines and Indonesia, nearly 100% of all contributions are personal giving. In our other two major markets, less than 50% come from personal contributions. In Australia, the real amount of money being contributed by club fundraising has been on a steady decline for the past five years. This has been offset by a growth in personal contributions but only 25% of Rotarians give. If we are going to continue to do good in the world under the Rotary brand, we will need to look beyond our members and our clubs and start asking the public to make regular contributions, just like every other charity. We are becoming time poor. Our membership is shrinking in some areas, and yet we believe in our brand to do good in the world. The challenge before us is to come up with ways to tell our story in such a way that everyone wants to contribute. After all the Rotary Foundation does deliver incredible value to the donor with one of the lowest administration costs of any charity anywhere and we have held a four-star rating (the highest possible rating) from Charity Navigator for the past eight years. Ask you friends and neighbors to sign up for recurring giving to The Rotary Foundation and watch your club linked contributions grow. To get contribution forms for recurring giving, contact this office. 6 POLIO Over the past week we have received several calls from our New Zealand based members asking if something had gone wrong with our reporting? We are seeing Polio contributions per District being reported between $500,000 and $750,000 per District! The New Zealand Government had just contributed NZ$5,000,000 to help in the eradication of Polio. This split across each of the Districts and was put through The Rotary Foundation because of the powerful way in which we spend the contributor s money. We expect that the two for one match from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation would also have helped in the decision-making process. After all, Bill and Melinda Gates also look to get value when they give to their chosen charities. Bill Gates challenged all of us to raise more than we have ever done in the past. Over the next four years we must raise $50m per year. A tall ask but one each one of us is up to. Again, we must look beyond our membership and ask everyone we know to make their contribution. As we write this 15 cases YTD of wild polio reported. Three more years of vaccinations from the last reported case and we can declare the job done. So, we think Bill Gates is on a winner with his challenge to us. We started this program and we as Rotarians must be there at the finish. 7 PER CAPITA Let s start a conversation? Every time we meet a Rotarian from another Club, we should ask the question What is your Club per capita? Unfortunately, for most, they won t have a clue what you are talking about. What the question does is to start a conversation about The Rotary Foundation. It helps bring The Rotary Foundation to top of mind. It helps lead into what project work your club is doing because of contributions to the Annual fund. If every Club published their per capita in their bulletin each week, all members would see the progress. It would encourage every member to contribute as it is their Clubs scoreboard and they can see the impact of their contribution. As you can see from the league ladder it is early in the cycle and the per capita ranges from $3.16 to $ The highest District per capita last year was $ from D3830 in the Philippines. Could that number be topped this Rotary year? PAUL HARRIS SOCIETY We now have over 1,300 Paul Harris Society members across the region and number grows every month. Because November is Foundation month, we do see a growth in members especially from the Philippines where it is an important time of the year to think about contributions to The Rotary Foundation. With nearly all contributions to The Rotary Foundation coming from personal giving, the Paul Harris Society is an important indicator of member belief in the work of The Rotary Foundation. It is an objective to have at least one Paul Harris Society member in every Club. Look at your own Club and ask the question, do we have a Paul Harris Society member and if not, who could be. Or, have you ever thought about all the charities you give to each year? Maybe there is an opportunity to review your personal giving and increase your own giving to The Rotary Foundation and become a member of the Paul Harris Society. 9 MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTION Ensuring that all Rotarians are well informed about Rotary, both in their own region and around the world is so important that it is a requirement of a functioning club that each of its members is a paid subscriber to a Rotary magazine. Every member of your club needs to subscribe to either the official magazine The Rotarian or a regional magazine, which for our regions is Rotary Down Under (Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Island nations) or Philippines Rotary Magazine (Philippines). Two Rotarians residing at the same address have the option to subscribe jointly. The subscription can be hard copy or digital (if available). Members in a club do not all have to subscribe to the same magazine. You can have a number of members subscribing to The Rotarian and a number subscribing to the regional magazine. If you are adding a new member, remember that you need to manually inform the magazine of the member s choice. Here are the contact details for each magazine: The Rotarian - RI Data Services team: data@rotary.org Rotary Down Under: subscriptions@rotarydownunder.com.au Philippines Rotary Magazine: philrotarymag@gmail.com or office@philrotary.com If all members do not subscribe to either The Rotarian or the regional magazine, the club could be suspended. At present, there are more than 60 clubs in the Philippines that are in suspended status due to non-compliance. Barbara Mifsud Coordinator Club and District Support South Pacific and Philippines Office PUBLICATIONS AND MERCHANDISE Rotary has some excellent resources available for everyone but they are currently being underutilised. There have been a lot of enquiries from Rotarians on where/how they can access certain publications and merchandise. This often includes things like Paul Harris Fellow Medallions. The Rotary Shop Online is an easy to use ordering platform listing publications for districts and clubs to help support and grow their members. There is also Rotary merchandise available to show your support for all of the wonderful work that we do across the world.
