WORK IN PROGRESS Are marriage and fertility endogenous in the female labor participation decision? Evidence from Egypt and comparison with Morocco with Ragui Assaad (University of Minnesota, Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, USA). Abstract. Relying on a structural model, the present research explores the endogenous relationship between fertility, the timing of marriage and females' participation decisions. Labor participation is modeled as a polychotomous variable that distinguishes between different status. Rural and urban females are studies separately. And, empirical results are compared with those obtained on Moroccan data. Keywords: Fertility, Marriage, Labor Participation, Endogeneity, Egypt. JEL classification: J12, J13, J16, J22, N37 Within resource allocations in Egyptian married couples: Do Distribution factors matter? With Catherine Sofer (Paris School of Economics, France). Abstract. We estimate a discrete-choice model for female labor supply within a collective framework. The economic model incorporates the possibility of nonparticipation for females. This represents in fact the working situation of a relatively high proportion of females and specifically married ones since we rely on Egyptian micro data. Alternative women empowerment measures distribution factors are tested here. The latest are factors that are quite original to the Egyptian case. They are related to the marriage market, the domestic violence and decision making patterns within households. Preliminary results affirm that most of those bargaining power measures are significantly related to the females participation decision in the labor market. Our study s policy relevant consists on promoting females bargaining power within the household in order to improve their status in the labor market. Keywords: Collective models, Distribution factors, Intra household allocations, Identification, Egypt. JEL classification: D12, J16, J22
3 Time allocation of Egyptian married females: Market work versus domestic production Abstract. The present research explores for the first time to our best knowledge the extremely biased division of labor within Egyptian households. Time activities in respect of paid and unpaid work are an important aspect of this study. The classical dichotomy of work in the market versus leisure may serve as a good approximation of the role the male plays in the production activity of the household but does gross injustice to the female since it overlooks the whole time she spends, outside the market, on domestic activities. And, studying the females invisible unpaid work is crucial since it remains the female s main occupation. Time use profiles are constructed using the Egyptian time use data available, only for females, in the Egyptian Labor Market and Panel Surveys of 1998 and The first empirical exercise is devoted to the analysis of the main determinants of Egyptian females time uses. Then, we analyze, relying on a Propensity Score Matching model (PSM), to what extent does marriage (and fertility) affect the females time uses over time. The latter is usually used to act as if a panel survey is an experimental design. Moreover, new estimates of the Real Product in Egypt taking into account the domestic production (since it represents real value to the people who produce and consume them) is an additional contribution of this research. Keywords: Time Allocation, Gender, Domestic Production, Egypt. JEL classification: D13, J16, J22. Rethinking the redistribution effects of trade liberalization in Egypt: A microsimulation analysis With Chahir Zaki (Paris School of Economics, France) Abstract. This paper develops a microsimulation analysis to evaluate the impact of trade liberalization policies in Egypt on income redistribution. Our analysis aims at identifying the effects of those measures on redistribution aspects. For this, we rely on a macro - micro approach integrating results obtained from a discrete choice model of labor supply in a Computable General Equilibrium model (CGE). In the empirical work, we use the Egyptian Labor Market and Panel Survey (ELMPS) of 1998 and 2006 as well as the Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) of This assessment allows us to find out to what extent such macroeconomic policies affect, on the microeconomic level, females poverty, wages and employment opportunities. Keywords: Micro-simulation, trade liberalization, redistribution effects, employment, gender.
