1 Annual Report
2 President Darby O Brien Board of Directors July 1, June 30, 2015 Vice President Robert Rice Jr. Government Treaurer Tobra Vescio Secretary Philip Montana /Government A message from the President & Chief Executive Officer New Beginnings, Opportunity Knocks! Larry Bohling William Calli, Jr, Esq. Roy Duhart Evon Ervin Lucretia Hunt Sue Korosec Robert Ohmann Morris Pearson Kelly Walters Janice A. Forte CEO Darby O Brien President It has come time to say good-bye as we retire from our positions as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), after 20 years, and as Board President, after three years. Planning for CEO retirement began more than 2 years ago. For the last eight months the board has been seeking new leadership and are happy to announce that current Chief Operating Officer, Danielle Smith, has begun transitioning into her new position as CEO. Our Mission: The Revitalization and Growth of Neighborhoods Chief Opperating Officer Danielle Smith Contracts Manager David Grosse Victoria Steele Staff Chief Executive Officer Janice Forte Chief Financial Officer Deborah Dorsino Elizabeth Preuss Wendy Clarke Community Coordinator Craig Grant Rose Marie Roberts Home Analyst Gabriella Marchesani This new beginning for the organization opens the door to many opportunities. We are excited for our first rental property at 24 Grant Street, to be managed by our organization and ready for tenants in early It is also time to reflect upon our successes and growth over the past 20 years. The support of our board has grown tremendously and transformed the organization into the strong entity it is today. We went from having several Executive Directors to one Chief Executive Officer for 20 consecutive years. In 1996, there were unrestricted net assets of $74,000 and now there is over $2.2M. Cash on hand to pay bills was only $25,000 and we now have $1M to operate our programs. During this time, we have provided over $120M in economic investments to the neighborhoods that we serve. Our service area increased from one neighborhood to six counties. By providing leadership training residents have acheived systematic change in their neighborhoods by changing several laws, creating the Armadillo, electing Utica Common Counsel and building Kemble Park which will be completed in Ultimately, families have secured their financial futures with our programs and neighborhoods have been stablilized. We look forward to our futures and the future growth of the organiztion. It s been a great ride. Invest.Renew.Grow
3 Products & Services For the Homebuyer Homebuyer Education For the Homeowner Home Improvement Loans Financial Education Foreclosure Prevention Additional Services Financial Literacy Education Reverse Mortgage Assistance Community Leadership Training Energy Smart Loan Programs KNOW THE STEPS THAT NEED TO BE TAKEN...AND TAKE THEM! was created to help aid individuals in pursuing their financial goals with one-on-one coaching sessions. Each session is tailored to the customer s specific needs with guidance and education from their coach. During the session(s) the coach will assist with creating a personalized action plan that is appropriate to fit the cutomer s targeted time-line. Community Empowerment The Kemble Park Project has been led and driven by the Cornhill Neighborhood Association (CHNA) in conjunction with their partners the HomeOwnershipCenter and the City of Utica. The total cost of the project will exceed $1 M. In late 2014 a $500,000 grant, applied for by the City of Utica and written by the HomeOwnershipCenter, was secured through the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. The City of Utica has designated over $350,000 to the park, demonstrating their vested interest in the project. The HomeOwnershipCenter and the CHNA have been working together and have invested $200,000 to date. This has helped to secure public & private resources to provide the funding necessary for the park s finishing touches such as tapistries to represent the neighborhood s diversity, sculptures, and other artistic elements. New Customer Facing Technology The ever changing world of technology allows for a tremendous amount of room for advancement in today s society. Neighborworks America decided to conduct the Sustainable Homeownership Project to identify and potentially implement strategies for expanding the visibility and impact of the homeownership line of business. The HomeOwnershipCenter was one of 26 Neighborworks organizations throughout the country selected to participate in this project. Our advisors are ready to use this technology to better serve you! Starting in September 2015, we will now be available 24/7 with the tools to provide customers the convenience of starting their homebuying process from anywhere! This will include online tools to track financial goals and customized roadmaps to success. It will also provide customers with the ability to register and pay for classes online! Invest.Renew.Grow.
