3 Learning Objective Multiples and Factors Learners should be taught to understand the words multiple and factor and relate them to multiplication and division facts. Information and Examples: Multiples If you multiply one whole number by another whole number, the result is a multiple of both these numbers. e.g. 6 1 = 7 7 is a multiple of 6. 7 is also a multiple of 1. Multiples of a number can be made by multiplying the number by any whole number. The numbers you find in the -times table are all multiples of. The multiples of are, 4, 6, 8, 10,... The multiples of 100 are 100, 00, 300, 400, 500,... Information and Examples: Factors A factor is a number that divides exactly into another number. e.g. 6 1 = 7 6 and 1 are both factors of 7. 5 Learning Objective Prime Numbers Learners should be taught to understand the word prime and know the prime numbers up to 0. Information A prime number cannot be divided by any number other than 1 and itself. Examples 1 is not a prime number. 3 is a prime number because only 1 and 3 will divide into 3 with no remainders. 19 is a prime number because it cannot be divided by any number other than 1 and itself. 6 Learning Objective Number Calculations Learners should be taught to carry out calculations with numbers of any size using efficient methods, and to know and use strategies to check answers, e.g. approximate calculations, estimation. Information When you are dealing with a large calculation, you sometimes need to make an approximation to identity whether the answer is sensible. Examples Lewis and Angel are saving for their holiday. Lewis can save 78 per month and Angel can save 131 per month. How much will they save in 6 months? Estimate = 10 6 = 160 Actual = 09 6 = 154 Cameron works for a stationery company and travels all over the country. Last week he travelled 589 miles on Monday, 0 miles on Tuesday, 85 miles on Wednesday, 31 miles on Thursday and 109 miles on Friday. How many miles did he travel in the week? Estimate = 1300 Actual = 1315 A cricket team scored 307 runs in the first innings and 19 runs in the second innings. How many runs did the team score altogether?
