3 Macroeconomic & Corporate News Arab Monetary Fund extends new loan of $56mln to Jordan The Arab Monetary Fund signed an agreement today in which the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan will receive a compensatory loan of JOD13.4 million, the equivalent of US$56 million. The loan comes in line with the Kingdom's economic reform efforts to overcome challenges faced in light of regional developments, mainly the crises in Iraq and Syria, that are impacting the country's economy. The Arab Monetary Fund is at the forefront of development partners of Jordan due to its role in supporting the economic and financial reform programmes adopted by the Kingdom to achieve comprehensive economic and sustainable growth, and to establish and strengthen the infrastructure of the financial sector. The AMF's portfolio in Jordan stands at twenty-two loans totalling $800 million. Jordan also benefits from periodic trade promotion initiatives, bringing the total value of support provided by the fund to about $1.8 billion. Jordan to implement oil shale electricity generation Prime Minister Hani Mulki on Saturday stressed the government s commitment to overcome any obstacles to the implementation of electricity generation through the use of oil shale, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. The project aims to increase self-reliance on local resources and to diversify energy sources, Mulki said, adding that the oil shale project could generate electricity at a capacity of 485 megawatt, with $2.1 billion of funding. The project would be the first of its kind in Jordan and the biggest in the Middle East, burning oil shale to generate 15 per cent of the Kingdom s total electricity, in addition to developing expertise in the field. Tackling tax evasion vital in Jordan's current economic conditions Addressing tax evasion efficiently has become of vital importance to the state budget and the overall economy in light of Jordan s current economic conditions, experts agreed on Saturday. Participants in a panel, organised by the Jordan Transparency Society, agreed on the need for stricter inspections and more awareness on the issue, noting that tax evasion decreases state revenues and compels it to resort to external loans with interest rates.
