2 International ADR Conference The International ADR Conference will be an annual flagship conference organized by the Thailand Arbitration Center and the UNCITRAL Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific. The Conference is designed to attract practitioners, judges, policymakers, academics and business persons for a comprehensive discussion on opportunities to promote the use of arbitration and other forms of alternative dispute resolution (ADR). The expectation is that emerging trends and opportunities for ADR and areas for improving the legal framework relating to ADR will be examined. The theme for each year s conference will be based on the relevant issues in the field of ADR at that time. Experts and scholars in international arbitration, mediation and online dispute resolution will be invited to present their views in order to engage in a meaningful dialogue with the international audience in attendance at the conference. New opportunities for convergence in alternative dispute resolution This year will be the first year for this annual Conference. The focus on new opportunities that result from legal convergence in alternative dispute resolution considers how legal unification and harmonization are essential in promoting the use of ADR and the enforcement of awards and agreements. The Conference will take place in the backdrop of the wider economic context that includes the Belt and Road Initiative, special economic development of the Eastern Economic Corridor in Thailand and the economic cooperation within the Greater Mekong Subregion. In particular, Thailand s centrality within the Greater Mekong Subregion and policy support for investments into the energy, telecommunication, transport and trade sectors increase the prospect that parties will opt for arbitration and/or mediation as their choice for dispute resolution. For the Greater Mekong Subregion, a harmonized legal framework will increase the predictability and consistency in the law, and reduce the risk of commercial activity within this region. Description Inaugural two-day flagship conference to discuss emerging trends in relation to alternative dispute resolution and the importance of a harmonized legal framework. Experts, scholars and legal practitioners will draw on areas of opportunity to support international arbitration, conciliation and online dispute resolution through the wider adoption and uni form interpretation of the UNCITRAL Texts. Particular attention will be given to the regulatory framework for alternative dispute resolution within the Greater Mekong Subregion as a key link to the Belt and Road Initiative and Eastern Economic Corridor.
